  • @substandardtim Japanese Beetles are destroying forests on the west coast.

  • This trap is also great for catching a bag full of virginity.

  • amazing how many were captured! had no idea...i just hung one outside, and the beetles & moths are swarming around it. had i seen this experiment sooner, perhaps i would have attempted adding a larger bag. one suggestion....you can compost them, rather then putting them in the trash. plastic in the trash is not environmentally sound. we need to recycle those bags, otherwise, they end up in the ocean. so perhaps once the beetles are dead, you can purge the bag, and rinse out after composting. :)

  • Why doesn't our replublicratic government call the Army in on this one, jeeze

  • "...set it on fire, or put it in the yard of someone you don't like..."

    You fucking crack me up!!!

PS: I'm on meds to help control my cussing, but I fucking keep forgetting to take the god damned stuff.

  • In Minnesota the bettles are bad too me and my dad just put up traps 2day

  • i like this guy...

  • I always get rid of Jap beetles in my yard by picking them by hand. How do those bags work?

  • @daCritic1000

lol good luck getting that many by hand...im making one right now Northeastern PA

  • @INFOWARforYourMind They're actually really easy to catch since they're extremely slow and fall a foot of so if disturbed.

  • Hey what kind of beetles are those? Like pest beetles or like valuable stag beetles?

  • @DukeDonut They are Japanese Beetles and they are pests anywhere in North America although they haven't made it to the western half of the country yet I don't think.

  • nice shirt

  • Hmmm. This is very interesting. I would very much like to see what would happen if you attached a xxl clear trash bag liner to the trap. And for your commentary, can you please sing instead of talk? Thank you for considering this request.

  • I don't know if I could sing instead of talk, though I think a musical score is a must for any potential sequel.

  • Hmmm...interesting....you know i have a cousin who friggin got a PhD studying Locusts!!! Locusts brains and stuff they distroy crops too.....If i meet him up one day...will be sure to ask.. =]

  • How bout using UV Black Lighting to attract these guys?...Would it help?..And sorry for my ignorance...but do these beetles destroy food crops or bite people? i live in the big city =]

  • hmm not sure about a black light, when i did this attracting them certainly was not the problem.

they definitely eat crops though I think it is more of a problem for home gardeners who could lose everything easily than it is for commercial farmers.

  • i bought 3 traps that have a zipper at the bottom of them for easy beetle removal.after they are dead, put them in thick bags they can't eat thru, drive to a business that has an outside garbage can & throw them in .

  • yeah I think that's a new model for this year. Doesn't quite make my idea obsolete but it sure is better than the standard store bought ones.

fyi...throwing the bag in a business' garbage can is considered theft of services and against the law. Unless of course you buy something from them. So go through a McDonalds drive through that has an outdoor can and leave em a present!

  • i've changed my ways.i empty the traps every 2 to 3 days because i usually collect no more than 20 in each one.i dump them in a small bucket of soapy water(they can't escape) and the next day they are dead & i seperate the beetles from the water & throw them in the garbage,

  • hooooooooooooooooooly crap! how big can those beetles get?

  • good helpful informful but the quality not so good

  • ya I know. I'm considering making a new bigger smellier version with better quality video but I'm still sourcing a location that won't get me in trouble for destroying nearby crops.

  • I triple bagged the beetle carcasses from my kill, and still; the odor was pungent and horrible. I dumped the bag (after quintuple bagging) into an industrial dumpster in a new subdivision destined for the county dump.....Bug Trappers Unite...save the maters et al.

  • where was this filmed? I've never seen so many beetles in one place.

  • in Pennsylvania. We have farm fields all around us and I would venture a guess that the farmer had healthier crops last year thanks to my beetle trap.

My sister who lives more than a 1/4 of a mile away said she has a lot more beetles this year than she did last year when I did the trap. Our beetle population was quite minimal this year :)

  • @substandardtim I live in PA and our beetles are terrible this year. I cant even make it to our garden

  • @oopsypoopsy04 Judging by the amount of views the video is getting right now, I'm guessing a lot of people are dealing with a bad year of beetles...Fortunately I have none. I was going to film an epic sequel to this video this year but apparently my chickens have eaten all of the beetle grubs. So...there's the solution, Chickens!

  • great idea. I just got a little one and will do a big one like you did soon. I bought bayer tree and shrub to put around trees and shrub and also some big spray. This is the worst spring beetle time ever!! Thanks for the big bag idea!!

    Kate

  • That's it, I'm buying a bunch of those traps! Vicious little bastards! Water in some nematodes, that will take care of the overwintering grubs, BTW.

  • I need help. What time of the year do you add the Nematodes.

  • I think its early Spring, probably too late as I caught one of the little jerks eating my hibiscus today. Should have bought them myself, its such a bad bug year with all our rain.

  • omg o.O im still in the picking them off the flowers stage....

  • I like your experiment... that is an amazing quantity of beetles for a day? I will be posting a video soon, demonstrating how to recycle beetles so they stay out of the trash and don't escape... I hope you watch it! It's a tiny war... I can't believe you said you could put in a yard of someone you don't like ("> giving those kids some interesting avenues for dealing with beetle bodies... Nicely done

  • yeah, I was using the small trap (like the one you had there) and was overwhelmed by how often I had to change it.

So, I put an open trash can underneath the trap (also open) and put soapy water in the can (about seven inches) and still filled the danged thing every two days.

But, I learned they don't like soapy water so much.

So, this year, I got one of those generic sprayers for the hose and sprayed all my bushes and trees.

They're still here, but, way less.

  • Hey Tim! If u get about 4 minutes, watch my Jap Beetle show... your vid is cool!

  • I bet all those dead beetles are the worst and strongest smell you have ever, or ever will encounter. Does you're whole property smell like the dead beetles?

  • The smell was pretty horrendous. Sometimes worse than that though was just trying to leave the house. Beetles would be swarming into the yard from all directions, it was quite a thing to see. Learn from my mistake: Don't put it anywhere near your house.

  • HAHA lol.... that idea is hilarious but smart at the same time.

  • These things work soooooooo good. We were having a problem with japanese beetles in our yard so we bought a few of these and placed them in our yard and were amazed with how many we caught in them. If you have a problem with them get one.
