  • to shpwrckF03 yes, that was WCS up till the 2 min mark (It really has changed a ton is you do your research the evolution is well documented) when they broke into a little jive kick section then some suzie q's into Lindy (and yes that was straight up lindy of that period) the following section SwingboyPA is Charleston not St. Louis Shag (I am trained in both and know the difference) again it was the period mechanics that are the aesthetic difference not the material content.

  • Although the U.S. Open is generally a West Coast Swing competition, this particular dance takes elements from several dances. Lowell and Carmen are old enough that they danced back in the day when there wasn't so much of a style difference between Lindy (Dean Collins/slotted/California style) and WCS.

The bit of "Charleston" they do is closer in aesthetic to St. Louis Shag (@2:40).

Talking to Lowell, he considered most of the dance to be "fast WCS" rather than Lindy.

    Great, innovative routine!

  • How about what style of dance this is???? I've been dancing for 3 years and can't figure it out. Cabaret??

It looks like a swing derivative, but it's not East Coast, Shag, or Lindy. And it really doesn't have the character of West Coast unless W.C. has evolved/changed so much since then...

  • Just a guess but it looks like a Cabaret American Swing to me, as opposed to International style swing (jitterbug), or west Coast.

Not usually my favorite dance, but they're hot! :)

  • Thanks!

  • It's WCS. Slotted movement, forward walking. Not too many triples but it's distinct.

  • Does anyone know what year this was?

  • 1991
