I've never learned to speak french, and didn't look up a description before i wrote this, and the song definatly gives off a powerful impression.
There's longing, but not bittersweet, its a sincire and honest longing for someone important to them. If not love then something close in terms of power. Also towards the end, it radiates contentment, for lack of a better description.
je n`ai pas aime cette chanson car notre professeur de francais nous a oblige la chanter chaque semaine.Mais j`aime beaucoup comme elle chante, elle a une voix merveilleuse vraitement,et maintement j`aime la chanson aussi!
@angel75020 She sings with the addition of many "grace-notes" (q.v.) - quite usual in traditional Irish folk-song both in English and in Gaelic; but perhaps not in French. She's using elements of traditional English folk-song too, and I note some not-unpleasant American additions at the end. The whole sounds very good indeed to me (I'm Irish, of course!). Clearly the grammar of modern folksong has now a strong Irish accent!! Ah, bien sûr, bonne écoute de toute façon - et, en profiter!
"We are gauls, franks, latins, saracins, africans, norses, celts...we are a part of all of them...we are frenchs..." Voilà! Parfaitement dit. Et fiers de l'être :D
@Draksen There's a clear difference between ethnic French and having French nationality. A nigger and an Arab can never be French ethnically speaking.
@TemplarX2 As "ethnic french" doesnt exist anymore and/or has never really existed, your sentence is worth nothing. Being french is a culture and has nothing to do with blood.
Stunning! I'm a 70 year old Englishman living in Spain. My father taught me to sing this song when he was on Leave during WW2. Unfortunately, I don't know the translation.
Impossible not to fall in love with this performance. The people in the audience were so lucky to see it live and the rest of us should be grateful for this video. Thank you, oliverina!
The Gauls were Celts, yes, but the French are not and they are not descendents of Gauls either. Only the Brittons are celtic, the Normans are Norse, and the rest come from the germanic Franks. This song has nothing to do with the Irish.
@willprovost85 This depends on the region. The Normans were mixed of gauls and Norse (not that much Norse contrary to belief). The Parisains and Northerner in generals were Frankish. The Burgundians were a mixed of Norse Germanic, Gauls and Romans. It changes from region to region but the two mains races would be Franks and Gauls with signicant Romans especially in the south. Northern France is traditionally Frankish while the South Roman all that cemented by Celtic blood.
So nice ;-)!A marvellous interpretation with a Celtic finale ;-) ! The Gauls are Celtic aren't they!?Thank You for the singing with heart and a green gown!May St.Patrick bless You Olivia! From Warsaw with cordial greetings ;-)!
@Baccalaureus79 Of course i read ;-)!My question is a rhetorical figure.Olivia is English. She sings an old french song,a military one.Anglo-French conflict is a history. The Celtic notes in her marvellous performance are very symbolic to me-showing the roots of the Brittons and the French-the Celtic ones.

Wow she rocks ! Never hear this traditional French song with a so amazing cover,
Barely not accent, just nice touch congratulation.
Elle assure un max, jamais entendu une telle version. C’est épatant surtout pour une anglaise, presque pas d’accent juste une jolie touche. J'adore.

Very nice, even if it is not really the way to sing old French people...
It would be rather with a drawling and murmuring voice and stressed intonations...
But this is new with english or north american flourishments...lol
Thanks Olivia!!

@Draksen We surely aren't saracens and Africans. These are not ethnic French and Gauls are actually Celts.

@TemplarX2 You managed to put "ethnicity" and "French" in the same sentence. Congratulations, but you havent understood what France really is.

@Sowka1967 "The Gauls are Celtics..." -
Never read Caesar, did you?
"Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres,
quarum unam incolunt Belgae,
aliam Aquitani, tertiam, qui ipsorum lingua Celtae,
nostra Galli appellantur."
