Still the worst Melb cup call ever. He never called the great mares name until she'd hit the front! It gets to me every time I watch this 2nd cup win of the great mare.
Personally I'm disapointed she was retired, though I understand the owners wish to reward her, but what she might have done the next season stricktly at WFA might well have sealed her place as one of the all time greats..To me it seemed she was getting better with age...
@pabloalarroyo if you can't call her a champion after 3 cups, yes a handicap, but never done before. A Cox Plate, BMW, Aust Cup, Memsie, Syd Cup, Turnbull Stks. Effective on good or soft going, could carry weight. Mate, what else could she have done for you to call her a champ??
Greatest run of Australian horse over the last 20 years was Better Loosen Up in the 1990 Japan Cup. Remeber Colin Hayes stated the Better Loosen Up as a 5yo was better than Dulcify. PS Makybe Diva had 2 goes in Japan in a weak g3 race and g1 race over 2 miles and got lapped. Great handicapper but not a top 10 horse over the history of Australian Thoroughbreds plus she was British not Australian she was an import.
not really british... i thought it was two horses from two different countries and she was brought here at birth? to confusing for me, i think we will just consider her australian as this is where she ran........ and as for japan, there could have been many factors in that, we cant expect her to run the perfect race all the time, all i know is that she ran the perfect race 3 times in the ones that mattered
chunkychikenman321 ...As a handicaper in the latter stages of her career, she gave a significant advantage to most of her rivals, which suggest that she would have lapped them had it been WFA, she did also win a cox plate at WFA...and wtf does it matter if she was Australian, British or Mongolian, It seems to me you are indulgin in the great Australian pastime, of knocking a tall poppy down...BTW start your own Better Loosen Up video and see how many hits you get ...
Handicap races are for the weaker horses, anything with ability has an advantage. look at this years Melbourne and Caulfied cups half the field where no better than listed performers. Weight for age is generally for group 2 and beyond.
My point stands, she performed at both handicap, in which she gave away significant weight advantage to her rivals and gave them a sound beating, and she also won at WFA, 2005 cox plate, BMW 2005, Australian cup 2005, she won the Turnbull G1, The Memsie G2, The Queen Elisabeth G3, The Sydney Cup, won at group or listed company from 1400 to 3200 mtr, Your point about her not doing well in Japan could simply be that she didn't travell well as can happen with some horses, but her record stands
Youre not seriously suggesting Lonhro's Australian Cup win is up there with Makybe's third Cup, M&P's Caulfield Cup or Dulcify's Cox Plate? Please. He beat Delzao. Lonhro was great, but certainly not a champion.
Makybes third Cup is over rated, a sensational win based on the accomplishment, but she was gifted it at the weights and had the dream run, you talk about Delzao, well Makybe had On A Jeune chasing her into second, a gallant horse but the best its won is a Geelong Cup. Lonhro was heavily checked and looked no hope 200m out but powered home, the most remarkable victory i have seen.
maybe the other horses in Lonhro's race had spent their energy and had nothing left, which could explain why Lonhro managed to come over the top, because no horse has a turn of foot that can take a field within 200m if they are in a bad position
and by the way... the australia cup that lonhro won, was a 2000m event, whereas the melbourne cup is a 3200m event... makybe diva's specialty is the distance events, the 3200m, whereas the 2000m is more of a sprint. i agree lohnro's win was amazing, but you can't really compare the 2 horses as they run 2 different types of races... Just remember, Lohnro was never good enuf to win 3 melbourne cups
One thing i forgot to add that i find amusing. You bag out Lonhro's Australia Cup win, maybe you should look through the field and i think you'll find that Makybe Diva actually finished a few lengths behind him.
I didn't bag Lonhro's win. It was a sensational win. But to compare it to Makybe's 3rd Cup or Might and Power's Caulfield Cup or Dulcify's Cox Plate is just ignorant. They are 3 of the best performances of all time. As for On a Jeune, he was no star but he had 51 kgs and the mare had 58. And she beat him comfortably. Any fair minded person knows The Diva was a different proposition in Lonhro's Australian Cup year as she was a late bloomer. Lonhro wouldnt have got near her in 2005.
Much as we rightly praise Makybe Diva, hats off to Vinnie Roe. Carried that much weight and was only narrowly beaten by the handicap and horse that got a dream rails run.

makybe diva is the second best horse ever behind the fighting tiger northerly which could make you cry watching it.
allinjim123 3 years ago
true true, but she is probably the greatest horse in Australian Racing History! her 3rd win was the most remarkable win ive ever seen.
sammyg2222 4 years ago
have you been watching for any longer than 3 years?
Lonhro's Australian Cup was remarkable as was Dulcify's Cox Plate win and Might And Power's Caulfield Cup win.

There is no way that she is the greatest...
One of the greatest, definitely
There are claims for many to be labelled the greatest horse...
Personally, I would probably have her in the top 10, but not the top 5
