  • Come on, admit it; it don't get any better... and never will. "Eagles", cry your eyes out...

    !

  • anyone know when this was recorded?

    liking this a lot!!

  • Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined. I think of crime when im in a New York state of mind....

  • wishing the clips from michael's pub, were still posted, darn.

it's mel's birthday :) would love to hear those.

    love his music, voice

  • I saw Mel Torme at a small club on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the 1980's.Great singer.I heard him do this song.It was special then and still is!

  • I was fortunate enough to hear Mel Torme in Vegas in a lounge in the late 60s. Nothing but a stool and his guitar. Now that was magic.

  • @jessied44 : I saw Mel play guitar, piano & drums at a concert he gave at the Wrest Point Casino in Hobart (Australia) in 1974. He took over the room....what a player..it changed my life musically......it was 'the'perfect' concert of my life...even to this day....a musical giant.....

  • Just terrific. A fabulous song interpreted by a fabulous singer.

  • I just love how they slip into the Latin beat for the bridge. I bet that even surprised Billy Joel. So damn smooth

  • Take a listen to his 2 sons- Steve March Torme and (cant rememer his first name- do a google search)...both really good (especially Steve), but look nor sound anything like him!!!

    Thanks for your feedback!

    Harry

  • In my haste to laud Mel Torme's version of above song I may have created Ambiguity of the actual composer who of course was Billy Joel. The arrangement he replicated in the Concert tribute to the victims of 9/11 was a definite nod to Mel Torme,

  • I sent this to my chum in Geneva, a fellow Scotsman and smooth jazz aficionado, with the message that Billy Joel did it in the Concert to pay tribute to the 9/11 victims. He paid tribute not only to that happening but chose a seminal song about New York and also one of the all time great Composers and singers of smooth New York Jazz.. I'd have loved to have been a resident of the "Town" during that period! To quote Hemingway that really would have been a "Moveable Feast"

    Neil Street

  • This is my go to song when I am feeling down. Such an upper! Thank you Mr. Torme, your voice is gold. I also like the live version for Tokyo:) Thanks for posting this amazing song with awesome photos of the city.

  • RIP Mr. Torme.

  • Is it Shearing on the piano in this cover?

  • Thank you Billy Joel.

  • supadude626

Not EVEN near the class that Mel is in...Mel is the best JAZZ singer ever

  • @gladdad101 My bad, then!

  • @gladdad101 Agreed... untouchable.

  • Got to love this! God rest your soul!

  • Great singer great song; Thank you!

  • Mel Torme reminds me of Michael Buble

...or wait, isn't it the other way around?

  • @supadude626 Those two names don't belong in the same sentence, nay, not in the same category.

  • @marsoullis My bad, then!

  • @supadude626

That’s right. Michael Buble reminds you of Mel Tormé.

    I like Both.

  • @rocsil NOT EVEN CLOSE

  • @gladdad101

    RIGHT “gladdad101”

I’m referring to the voice tone, not as an artist

    I like Michael Buble.

MEL TORME is MEL TORME one of the best Jazz scat singers ever, full point

    Thank you for your comment.

  • @supadude626 : Buble should be very pleased to be spoken about in the same breath as Mel......Torme was a multi instrumentalist extraordinaire, arranger, player.....both are naturals...and deserve their place in music's rich tapestry.....

  • @kevinherbert Buble is a hack compared to singers like Mel Torme

  • The way Mel sings this, and pauses in just the right spots clearly shows that he was the greatest singer that ever was or ever will be - he sings with feeling

  • Born in 1970 grew up with this playing in my house all the time

  • I love this incredible song.

  • Hey man, I've got this on his' Live from Marty's' album (which I think is his greatest record...but no matter) What album is this off of? Thanks for posting it.

  • Is this really good...or what!!

  • thank you, thank you 170672346.

    in fact...I want this answer!!

  • Thanks 170672346 was just going to point this out.

Of course it Phil Woods on alto.

    Denis

  • @DenRJ No problem Denis, I have the original Lp and it's a great album from start to finish, recorded in London. All the very best.

  • It's actually Phil Woods on alto saxophone, but great post anyway - 5 stars
