My question woudl be does the Palm have the option of inviting attendees. it is very hard to find a PDA/Smartphone that does this and yet many of our phonhes are used for work purposes. Am I missing something here? I am looking for a smartphone that has this option or the capabilities to do something that would notify others of a "meeting" or event.
I don't care about colors and facebook calendars.
What I wanted to find out, that your demo didn't cover, was if searching the calendar was good or not. Can anyone enlighten me on search in the palm pre calendar? Thanks.
Really useful video! I don't actually own a Palm Pre but your video was the only way I could find out whether it will work with my Google Calendar the way I want it to (looks like it does by the way) before buying one. Thanks for the clear explanation.
Using the Google Calendar feature in my Gmail account, I created 8 "subcalendars" or categories. My Pre assigned colors based on the alphabetic order of the categories, and I'm pleased to have access to *some* color coding options! I now use Google calendar in place of my old Palm Desktop, and syncing occurs automatically. I am told that Outlook calendar can also be used for this. Note: Desktop software isn't available for the Palm Pre, but it syncs with these other programs.
Set up a Gmail account, and become familiar with Google Calendar. Create up to 8 calendars (the # of colors that Pre supports) each with a separate color that the Pre uses. Under Google Calendar's "show all" view, you can see one consolidated calendar with color-coded events. Then add your Gmail account to your Pre and the calendar appears (you may have to Sync). ...more...
...You'll have to spend a few hours getting the colors to match just right, and learning some of Pre and Google's strengths and limitations, but it's totally worth the initial time investment when you get a beautifully color-coded calendar that is very functional. Keep in mind that "month view" will not show colors, but this is true of all smartphones I tested.
Thank you so much. It is helping me. However, I notice if I erase an event in my Palm Pre when I sinc it, it does not erase in my Google calendar... It is taking me a while to set up colors, but excited about it. Who in the world thought about taking away the colors!!!??? Men, that was a bad desicion. Anyway, any advice?
Hmmm... Maybe the event in question is under "palm profile" and not under google calendars? I don't ever assign an event to "palm profile" for that very reason. Yeah, it takes a while to figure out how to make the colors match on both the device and desktop, but you'll get it! Enjoy!
@xola1111 This is one reason i have no gotten one yet, I will not buy anything that doesn't have a monthly view like the Palm OS calender, i could find anything in seconds just cause of colors. I have about 10 different colors. When palm updates it or makes an amazing app, Then i will buy
Update: I finally bought the Palm Pre. Even though the Palm Pre doesn't have all the color-coding options that the Palm TX had, its calendar feature is far superior to any other smartphone I've tested. I spent months doing my research, and finally bought the Palm Pre for its calendar, but love it for its ease of use and multi-tasking ability. I believe this phone and calendar to be the best on the market.
I finally got the colors! I went to my Palm Pre, got my calendar and press "calendar" like if I were sincing, then find and press "Calendar View Options" and there you go! COLORS!!! Yeah! Anyway, thank you so much. What other feutures you have discovered that you like, I am sure I am missing a bunch of stuff. Thank you for your help!
Good question, I'm switching from the old Palm TX, and I'm looking for a smartphone (not iPhone) that has color-coded categories for different appointment types. If anyone can answer this it would be very much appreciated!
question: In my google calendar I have many color-coded calendars for tracking appt types - will this transfer over so that i can look at a day and know what type of appt I've scheduled - is there a limit to how many I have?
Can you please check what happens when on the week view, you tap on one of the events? On Palm OS a box pops out with information about that event. Tapping twice takes you to that event in the day view.
Why is there a time difference for the picnic event, after the sync? On the pre it starts at 9 but into your google calendar sometime around lunch time after the sync...
It's because Google Calendar uses Grenwich based standard time and other calendars use another standard. Or something like this, it happens with all Google Calendar subscriptions to other calendar services
Hey great video. Do you know if the pre actually reminds you if youre going to be late and suggests the fastest route to get there. they advertised the phone as being able to do that initially....just wondering.
I don't understand why there is no search for an event in the calendar. That doesn't make any sense. And if you click on the address you put in under "Location," does it open Google Maps? (It really should if it doesn't!).
Also, why can't you do a search for these under the Universal search? Why only apps & contacts? Why not also memos, tasks, events, etc???
Thanks again for the videos. What about inviting people to events? There was an early video about synergy between calendar, gps and the phone sending a message to attendees automaticall when it 'sensed' you being late..
I have a question, in google if you put a specific address it will show you a map in google maps, will the pre calander do that as well? Also, what happens if you put the same event in both google and the pre and then sync? one last question, what happens if you put 2 different events in the pre for the same time same day?
Yes there is, as you saw in the video you ahve the option to snooze. Tapping snooze places a notification in your notification bar. I don't know if this will pop back up to remind you.
How do you set up two calendars within your google calendar, like you did with a main one and a work one?

Wow dude you answered my question on how to get layered, its 2-hr minimum between events. Thanks!

I would also like to know if the Palm Pre's calendar has color-coded categories. This is one of the features that has kept me faithful to Palm.

You have to use another program as the "desktop" component, but you can get color-coded categories. I love my new Palm Pre.

I had the same thought, but I wonder if he checked the timezones. His gcal may be CA time while the Pre is Eastern, that'd sync up perfectly.

You know I heard this too but I haven't seen anything for it. Maybe it will be handled with 3rd party apps or something...

Sweet! That's basically everything I wanted to know about the Pre's calendar. You nailed it man :)

What about google's public calendars, do they show up when you add them to your account? For example, if you add a holiday calendar.
DivinoAG 2 years ago
yes all public calendars come in but you can filter which ones you want to see.

2 questions:
1) can you set up different calendars in the Palm Profile account?
2) can you just type to search for events?
thanks--your videos have been fantastic!

I don't see a way to set up a different calendar in the Palm Profile. I also cannot type to search for an event.

Interesting....so there is no universal search within the Calendar app?
