when he starts to sing around 3:00, it sounds alot like the mid part of When I Hear My Name from the White Stripes. And like Ball and Biscuit too (also white stripes).
Not that it matters or something, this is very promising! hope to hear more of him.
Wow!!! Just wow. As a big fan of Mark Knopfler, The Black Keys, etc., this is some of the best music I have heard in a very, very long time, maybe ever. Very impressed! He's got the whole package. I for one am gonna have to see this cat live!
@jklivin222 If you ever get the chance try to see him in a small setting go for it. Its a very special experience to be amongst a select few just jamming over his vibe in a club. He can really go for it playing wise without having to worry so much about the time of his set. Have been seeing him tear it up at antones for years down here in the ATX. I'm certain once warner's drops his debut he'll be in arenas.
I was really confused as to what he had in his mouth...it was his PICK! But, my God, this guy's awesome. I found this guy in SPIN magazine, went to his website and listened to the whole EP. My mind was blown. This is the greatest guitar player I've ever seen, and no I haven't seen Hendrix play although I really need to look into that. Either way, I've been playing since I was 12, listening to Jack White, Kurt Cobain, Dan Auerbach and this guy goes under my top 5 influences...hes just kick ass.
note how, when a guitarist wants to connote sheer majesty and power, he plays Third Stone from the Sun - Hendrix is the standard by which all other blues-rock guitarists are judged - Clark's got a great sound though, I'm just looking into his music - should be a treat
@rtw1313 Just for the record, I had a, "Hey, check it out, it's Third Stone from the Sun, that's pretty awesome," mentality, I wasn't trying to accuse him of anything. Just clearing that up :)
Y'know, sometimes I hear a guitarist who only downpicks and I think to myself, "that's really holding that guy back - he should do something about it". But sometimes I see a guitarist who is "missing" some technical thing like that - not using their pinky, not alternate picking, or only using two fingers while fingerpicking, and I think "man, this sounds so good that it doesn't even matter".
@KabCGuitar new black keys is a shitty excuse for blues. became too commercial. The Big Come Up will always be the best kind of Black Keys. Rubber Factory, Thickfreakness, and Magic Potion too though.
@theotheraldo Whoa now, I don't recall where The Black keys ever said, "hey guys this next album will be straight up blues." In fact any time I've seen them talk about their music they don't claim themselves to be Blues. They're just making music, and of course they're going to change, there's only so much you can do as a two piece before you have to explore other directions. And commercial?
@DJMC141 hes the best guitarist of our time..i dont know anyone who is better..yeah he makes a bunch of pop shit,,but hes a great song writer and owns his guitar every time hes on stage
Oh Sweet baby Jesus, when he cuts into that 3rd stone from the sun riff i melt inside. beautiful beautiful stuff. this is where music should be now and always
for ten minutes and 49 secons I have been to every place in the world, have seen things in the future and in the past. This just took me by the hand and explained me the universe. magic
It gives me chills everytime i watch this video. His on stage presence is just out of this world. His voice and skills on the guitar are in awesome. No way could anyone now a days compete.
I discovered Gary on the last Crossroads concert, as did most people. Damn, I hope this guy makes it big, because he's awesome. But why does John Mayer keep croppin up in the conversations about Gary Clark Jr? Both are great, no need to compare.
@pantera6 are you serious? come on john mayer's got this dude stepping on his heels because this guys got some soul ! not saying mayer doesn't. but, yeah!
I saw Gary at Brazil, when he played before Eric Clapton's concert for 50,000 people! He is amazing, I loved "I Don't owe you a thing"! And in the end, he played the encore "Crossroads" with Eric. It was amazing! Thank you Gary for the amazing concert that you did here in Sao Paulo, Brazil!
