Opinion: Self defense goes up to the point when you have control of the situation. If, for example, you shoot a person in the face in genuine self defense it is self defense. If they aren't dead and you shoot them again after that it is no longer self defense.

Jerome Ersland is guilty of murder in my book. The first shooting was easily justifiable as self-defense. The second was only to murder the boy. Parker was no hero - don't forget, he was robbing someone with a gun - but he did not deserve to be murdered. If there is a working justice system in America, Ersland will be jailed for life with possibility of parole after 20 years, and Parker's family will get most, if not all, of Ersland's estate.

Update on the WBC protest: They didn't even make it to Joplin. A group of them were denied gasoline at a truck stop, were cornered by some truckers, and got the tar beat out of them. One guy from Joplin, a member of WBC, decided to protest by himself. The police led him to his designated area, behind some yellow tape, and told him to stay put because they couldn't protect him if he left that spot. He opened his sign, which read "God Hates Joplin", and was immediately chased by several bikers.

He definitely went over the line. Not only was it unnecessary, it was also premeditated by the fact that he went to retrieve a second loaded gun with the sole purpose of ending the person's life. That's murder, not self-defense and he deserves a first degree murder charge.

Ersland might be able to plea down to 2nd degree murder, since he was held at gunpoint, but I think he's still going to go away for at least 15 years.

Jerome Ersland is guilty of murder in my book. The first shooting was easily justifiable as self-defense. The second was only to murder the boy. Parker was no hero - don't forget, he was robbing someone with a gun - but he did not deserve to be murdered. If there is a working justice system in America, Ersland will be jailed for life with possibility of parole after 20 years, and Parker's family will get most, if not all, of Ersland's estate.

When one is facing a situation like this i believe it's best to injure the attacker, killing should be the last measure. Update on the WBC protest: They didn't even make it to Joplin. A group of them were denied gasoline at a truck stop, were cornered by some truckers, and got the tar beat out of them. One guy from Joplin, a member of WBC, decided to protest by himself. The police led him to his designated area, behind some yellow tape, and told him to stay put because they couldn't protect him if he left that spot. @zorl89peekay - I dunno, man. I see "christianity" as being specifically engineered to propagate this kind of shit. It takes Jesus' name and all the good for which he stood and uses it as an excuse to persecute anyone who doesn't believe he was the messiah. Jesus himself would be appalled to learn of the religion because it's exactly the thing against which he stood, going by a different name. People who truly appreciate what he believed and taught should have nothing to do with xianity.

@zorl89peekay - I think you're right in that divinity doesn't hate. However, xianity clearly does not speak for divinity. There's a reason why most people who actually know what it says in the bible choose not to be xians. Give it a good cover-to-cover read if you don't believe me, and you tell me after that that it's so wonderful.

People want to attack America on our violent crimes but other countries have people being beheaded and stabbed repeatedly aswell. The real statement shouldnt be "WTF AMERICA" but "WTF HUMAN RACE". I love my country as I'm sure the majority of others who live in other countries do theirs but lets just be clear on one thing were there's a will theres a way. the dude just shot a kid. Unless he is use to that, he would not have been thinking with a clear head. In short, continuing to shoot the teen should be judged according to how long his mental state could return to normal after such an incident.

If he was smart enough to try and capture the second guy, then he knew he was committing murder when he came back to finish off the young man lying on the floor. It would have been a totally different outcome if he killed the guy while firing his weapon because he was afraid. He left the scene and came back!
