the fog that descends on cork airport is known as corry's fog. an allusion to Martin Corry a republican "hero "and maybe there was a stroke pulled to set up the airport there way back in the fifties. But then there have never been any accidents in all these years. Six lives lost and six lives traumatised are a tragic consequence if so .

To be controversial : When they evaluated locations for the Airport in the 1950's the preferred location was in the Lee Valley between Ballincollig and Ovens. What I heard as a kid back in the 1970s was that the site in Farmers Cross (i.e. Airport hill) was owned by someone well-connected politically... so guess where the Airport ended up.

Did political graft just result in the deaths of 6 people ?

guys. it was no fault of the pilot or the ground crew. it was foggy cos cork airport is built on top of a feckin hill. it's the worst air disaster on irish soil, and fortunately for the ground crew it was a small jet. i'm not saying it's not as important, i'm saying it would be much, much worse if a packed airbus or 747 hit.

@TheCajunpenguin Its nt the worst air disaster 'on irish soil'. 28 people died in 1954 on KLM Flight633.(Aer Lingus Flight 712(In1968,61died )nd Air India Flight182 (in1985,329 died) were'off shore').Also cork airport's altitude of 502 feet is twice dat of dublin's nd seeing as a hill is generally less dan 3000 its a small hill. Also fog is low-lying by nature.So the cause has nothing to do with the site choice. I think you mean in terms of fatalities 'lucky' it wasnt a 747.

One of my friends was actually at C.U.H. at the time as they were rushing people in from the crash, and he had no idea at first what was going on either.

The fog that morning was quite heavy, though not unusually so. My condolences to those affected.

I worked at Cork Airport from 1989 to 1998 when it was a small quiet airport. The AFO'S(police and fire service)used to take great pride in their job and day after day trained for what they hoped would never happen. Yesterday they proved that training really does pay..........4 minutes from time of crash to the fire being extinguished.....a job well done. Bravo lads and lassies.
