In Ireland, a 'chav' is often called a 'knacker', and that word comes from 'knackery', a place where the bones of animals were ground to make glue. It used to be the case that 'knackers', people who worked in a knackery, were a bit difficult to deal with and caused trouble with the police and with others, hence the named 'knackers' in place of 'chavs'. Of course, not all knackers and chavs cause trouble. They're just words that we all use.
