@BrundukasLT when you consider the amount of energy burned trying to get up to speed and how much your average is brought down from the start you realize 60km/h isn't all that slow.
Hoy has IncrediblE power. at what age did he do this? this short distance stuff is for the 23-25 year olds. If I remeber correctly, Arnaud got the world record at 22 years of age
provided it is steady and doesn't change direction, no. but it looks like high altitude... definitely a disadvantage for the unacclimated. but, maybe lest drag due to lower density... IF you can breathe.
Chris started both of his runs in Boliva faster than Arnaud. A plot of Arnaud's run shows a rise in speed, slight decrease in speed, then rise in speed again toward the end. A plot of Chris's run shows a faster start than Arnaud, that then tapers off steadily till the finish.
By my calculations, based off of interpolation of the split data, Chris Hoy did the his first Quarter-Mile (akin to a 1/4 mile Drag Race) from Standing start in about 26.19 seconds. This could be the fastest anyone's ever done that distance. The current IHPVA record for a streamlined bicycle is 26.96 seconds by Kirk Edwards from the University of California-Berkeley in the Concept Z streamlined recumbent bicycle.
That wheel is a Mavic iO, which has a specific direction for the spokes to be most aerodynamic. A batch came from the Mavic factory with the direction stickers on the wrong sides and therefore pointing the wrong way. So the mechanic put it in backwards without noticing. The time he lost easily cost him the WR. Jan Ullric ran with a similar wheel (PRO 4-Rays) backwards at the Tour of Germany TT a few years back, it was calculated to have cost 30sec in 30km or 1sec per km.
these guys have to train so so hard and have be utterly dedicated to their sport so anyone that has achieved what this guy has deserves enourmouse credit
Looks like they filmed it with a camera from the 1970's

Such a beautiful track!! Bad place to break records I guess... bc of the altitude??
ponchoso 1 year ago
@ponchoso No, it is a good place to break records.
recon455 1 year ago
@ponchoso Quite the opposite. The altitude is exactly why he chose the location. It gives an advantage to record attempts.

For the massive gear he's pushing for this TT, he's got an INSANE start.

jasoncreek 2 years ago
@jasoncreek I was just wondering that and assumed it must be the low drag coefficient.
Is 60 seconds too long to do the sprint on one breath? Surely it must be...
drsquirrel0 1 year ago
@jasoncreek He acclimated before doing this attempt. He chose the location with purpose and trained for it.

Chris Hoy was ahead of the Pace that Arnaud Tourant had on his record of 58.875 on the same track. Here is the difference in Splits:
At 167 meters, Chris was 0.566 secs ahead of Arnaud
At 333 meters, Chris was 0.717 secs ahead of Arnaud
At 500 meters, Chris was 0.823 secs ahead of Arnaud
At 667 meters, Chris was 0.710 secs ahead of Arnaud
At 833 meters, Chris was 0.452 secs ahead of Arnaud
At 1000 meters, Chris fell 0.005 secs behind Arnaud.
It's not over till its over! Oh so close

Met The Hoy, been to 7 Olympics etc, in the top 3 sportspeople I've ever met, and I've met most. Superb man.

1 lap = 333m

actually this track is 300 meters, not the same as a standard track.
machohogan 3 years ago
333.33 per lap, which makes 3 Laps for one exact Kilometer. Before the 90's, this track size was standard.

it doesn't even matter which way you put the front wheel on you bike. if there was a specific right way round then how would you tell?
