The tenors are not nearly as strong as they need to be. They often have the most important note of the chord in parts of the song, and I can barely here them!
Have a listen to PJ's version of "Killing Me Softly". It's a Gene Puerling arrangement. If you don't know who Gene is, don't feel bad. Neither did I until his name came up and I did a little research. You've heard his work before!
Oh em eff gee. You guys have NO idea how hard this song is to learn and perform. My jazz choir worked our asses off on a similar arrangement for about 7 months, and we still got slaughtered and went horribly out of tune about 50% of the time we performed it. Man and I thought I was pretty good.... A well earned kudos to everyone in this group. ( Also, yes Im pretty sure there is a New York Voices arrangement of this song)
Thank you so much. To change from one language to another is a tribute to all of the singers and their director. When you come back to the USA, I promise that I and my Grand Children will be there. Waiting for the new albums (CD/DVD'S) to arrive here in Houston, TX USA
FUN!!! usually Thomaz does his own piano work, but this one has such a difficult piano part and a difficult choir part that he has to control both. It's good to not always do just the voices sometimes. This works wonderfully. Thank you always Thomaz.
I think true music lovers find excellence in all genres. The late Canadian novelist, W O Mitchell, said the arts are how we know we are not alone. The Perpetuum Jazzile artists are bringing millions of us together, aren't they? The talent, the hard work, the discipline makes it seem so easy!
Incredible! I am a brazilian singer that is living in Sweden about 7 years. I have performed in some countries already and beside some great artists in Brazil. What I see here is a great swing! Samba in great stile! Thanks för that!
What an amazing group! Everything is so tight and it is difficult for a group this large to sound so disciplined. By the way....who is on keyboards?...the solo is over the top!
I have to admit it was "Africa" that drew me in...Actually I was sent an email with a link to the video...but it's their amazing sound that has kept me searching for more and more of their videos.
Baaaaah, heard it a thousand times, still soooo good.. The whole choir is so in time with the band, and with so complex rhythmic figures.. Almost impossible! Go figure...
That's the frustration of jazz musicians. Only 3% of all music buyers purchase within the diverse genre called jazz which already includes all other misclassified music. The more technical the music, the smaller the audience. Jazz has no mass appeal, sadly. Intellectuals need only apply.
Good points, I think that this shows that music can never only be a matter of commercialism.
One pragmatic approach is to mix it up. I hope this gem of a choir not only goes pop-cover in some american AMAZING!,COOL!,etc...-hype but keep their identity as well.
I think one secret of their success is that they do the pop-covers without any cliches, they take them seriously. This wakes people up to the fact that it is actually very good music :-)
Honestly, I'm generally a much bigger fan of jazz than pop, but I do like their rendition of Africa better. While this was good as a general jazz piece, I think PJ lost a lot of its flair by singing with the trio.
I think PJ's strength is in tightly executed, original and complex arrangements. However singing with the trio means they have to simplify their stuff considerably.
Now that I've thought about it some, these guys must be an intensely close knit group, even though there's quite a few of them. I can't imagine how many hours they've practiced together.
It is truly impossible to overstate just how incredibly amazing this performance is. Soooo tight. Brilliant composition, amazing arrangement, superb solos, just mind bogglingly good. If Africa hadn't already made the decision for me to buy the DVD when it's released, this would have done it.
0:00 - 1:05 and
5:08 - 6:14 ...this is brilliant music !
in my opinion the drummer isn´t necesary ....

I'd love yet another version, running q wee bit closer to classical music gravitas, as this is a mere step away from unsurpassable.
It can also be a jazz/classical version? -- just an impassioned , idle thought

Reminiscent of the Double Six of Paris or the Swingle Singers. However FANTASIC in their own right. Makes me wish that I could sing.

I'm from Brazil and I think it sounded great. I love all their pieces. If they're this good on video, I can't imagine how the group sounds "ao vivo".
BTW, the keyboard was awesome, and so the drummer and the bass guitar.

I don't understand how this song can only have 3000 views and Africa over 1 000 000! This is much more interesting music.
The male solo singer is more pop than samba though, never finds the rythm in the solo.
But I think he does great in other clips here.

@Iluj93 this IS jazz rhythm. Don't you hear the syncopation? Well, the jazz part starts later on in the song but yeah there is jazz in the song.
