  • I really wish Lon had done what he said in his talk. Appetizers are supposed to be tasty and inspirational. I cannot imagine people flocking to get the Book of Thoth as a result. Its really disappointing.

  • 7:02

I recently stumbled upon DuQuette's lecture series recorded and distributed by Chance Gardner, and in session II he goes into detail about the Whys and Hows of his "commentary" of the Book of Thoth. And he said that the Book of Thoth itself is the only true best commentary on the Book of Thoth in existence.

So the book is its own recursive commentary (with each new read). His work he described to be merely an appetiser to get into the Toth Tarot.

  • what are you views on israel regardie and franz bardons books

  • @xhellabentx Hi, Israel Regardie studied with Crowley, and of course he edited the GD books, which is not approved of by some GD adherents.

I think you can use knowledge of spiritual realms as described by Franz Bardon in tarot using the OOTK spread, but I have not studied him in any detail.

  • @PaulHughesBarlow Thanks so much for the prompt response im very interested in learning more about myself as well as studying the tarot i also thank you for giving a outside perspective on the different books available on the subject

  • & as a 25 year practitioner of Magick & initiate of several lineages, I'll say that Paul is telling it like it is, with little regard for appeasing others...Thoth decks & the Book of Thoth ARE in every U.S.A. bookstore but NOT due to the G.D. or O.T.O. approval.

    - PEOPLE BUY IT & NO such organizations can Stop consumerism when the demand is high.-Paul is a veteran, not incorrect, & respect is due, not insults.

  • @1AppleofEden I do want to make it clear that I have never applied for, or been a member of the GD, A.A., or O.T.O. in whatever flavours that are available. Tarot is an integral part of all of these organisations, although students would be hard-pressed to realise that. Tarot gets dumbed-down so much, particularly by the 'experts', which I find insulting to say the least.

  • @PaulHughesBarlow -Aside from several cults of African diaspora, I find the published works by Austin Osman Spare during his lifetime, to hold far more value than any structured hierarchical systems. The closest to the genuine origins of shamanism is what always intuitively worked best for me. However some prefer the man-made structure offered by "grade" systems, I've noticed that many seem to later become indecisive, perhaps once their own intuitive abilities have sharpened? Long Live A.O.S.!

  • @1AppleofEden I have an affection for AOS too. Perception is perception; no respecter of Grades. Still we do need some kind of structure. Before you paint a canvas it has to be stretched, prepared and undercoated, but that soon disappears when the artist gets to work.

  • Frankly I cannot even find Lon to be an entertaining speaker at ALL.

His Extremely obvious scripted tone & demeanor is laughable & far from actually informative.I think Paul has raised the bar in several ways.-Paul's sincerity & entire presentation is real & Concise...Paul offers truth & clarity relative to several aspects including Liber 231 which most purported experts refuse to even discuss if only due to total lack of knowledge on the topic.-& Crowley IS hated by the G.D. & MANY others.

  • throw the DuQuette book away :)

the book of thoth is about the most comprehensible of AC's works why bother getting second hand information through a self proclaimed mystic (about another self proclaimed mystic) :)

  • a lot of trolls be here

good luck with the Thoth Tarot, for certain minor numerical corrections it ends up being the tarot that makes "most sense" to itself, it's also nice and neutral, reflecting a removal of that old dualism we where so fond of in the last aeon (apparently).

as far as OTO members citing "proof" of their understanding via grades, lol at that! AC tried to beat it out of them, but human nature will always prevail, don't trust them! You don't need them you just need AC!

  • @DarkShroom If OTO members understood the Grades they would be in the A.A.

Lon is an entertaining speaker and he certainly knows how to neuter the life out of anything. Time I started doing a few more videos again.

  • "Crowley is hated in Golden Dawn circles" Um sorry but you are WAY over-generalizing. It just isnt true. Not in the slightest.

  • Eliphaz Levi is a good starting point. And then there is pretty much everything on or about the Golden Dawn, the O.T.O., the A.A., and Crowley's writings. I don't know anything about first editions, except they are going to be expensive

  • thanks for this. I can't wait to watch your other videos. Wading into the hidden is sometimes too muddy and redundant. So no books by M.Tsarion?? hahah j/k I notice all your books there you present are pretty recent. Any out of print books you recommend..like books that have been altered in reprints..to look for original editions?

  • Hi Paul,

I just want to say, you're most interesting post is well received. I hope to hear more.

  • @Analyzah Thank you! I spent a lot of this year immersed in the Book of Thoth, and I found so many interesting aspects my head is buzzing. One of these days I will find a coherent way of writing about them all.

  • Are you a member of Tarosophy Tarot-Town? You have so much to contribute. I know you know Donnaleigh. If you havn't come to Tarot-Town I invite you to join us.

  • The side-by-side of DuQuette (2003) and Crowley (1944) said it all...yep, a commentary would be double to triple in size going by the industry standards for magickal works. Great insight.

  • Lon's book on the Book of Thoth resembles all the other Rider-Waite tarot books out there. Maybe Lon did not know that Crowley detested Waite?

Please do a bit more research on whether I know a bit about magic.

  • @PaulHughesBarlow You dont know jack about jack. Dumb fuck.

  • 93,

You really should do some more research. You don't even know what the letters OTO actually stand for... How do you presume to say that they don't want people to read the book of Thoth? You need to realize that people don't produce massive commentaries on Crowley's work for a reason. And it's not the reason you are pushing here. Besides, the BOT is in every bookstore in the U.S.. That doesn't really support your position that we don't want folks reading it now, does it...

    93 93/93,

    Oz

  • Hi Oz,

I am talking about Lon's book. It would have been better for the OTO if the Book of Thoth had never been published, but fortunately it is out there. I have met many in the OTO and so far I have not met any with any knowledge of the Tarot.

  • 93, Well first, Lon is the Deputy Grand Master of OTO, and the Archbishop of EGC, and I would say he knows a fair bit about Tarot. Along with MANY of my Brothers and Sisters of the Order. And second, it is just insane to say that "It would be better for OTO if BOT hadn't been published" That is ridiculous... WE PUBLISH IT!! WE PUT IT ON THE SHELVES! Look, make videos as you Will, of course, but don't spread mis-information. It makes you look bad to serious magicians.

  • @ozzzz156 I concur. This guy really is grasping at straws here.

  • BTW... I found this video from a Facebook post ridiculing you about your ridiculous statements... I'm not picking on you. But if you keep this kind of thing up. I'll continue to laugh when you are ridiculed by people.
