Thanks jjagerson! Mine did this exact thing after 4 months of mild use. I really didn't want to send it off fully loaded with my info. I opened it up, hooked it up to my usb enclosure and turned it on. I just had to spin the disk a little bit (my spindle turned pretty easily, no tools required). It cranked right up. Be sure to turn it off and reattach the cover right away! The cover provides a lot of structural support for a 7200RPM spinning disk. It is backing up now with no noise. THANKS!!!
Happened to me today but fixed it. I still don't know what was really causing the problem but the noise from the disk was exactly like this video. I peeled off the cover (bad idea), plugged in the hard drive (bad idea) and then spun the platters with the axle in the middle by hand (very bad idea). However, it unstuck the motor and I was able to clone the HDD with no issues. Third SG HDD to brick this year (other 2 were BSY) no SG more for me, thanks. Do these steps at your own risk.
3) It took quite a bit of force to get mine loose 4) I had to work the platters for a good 20 min to get them loose enough again that the motor could spin the platters by itself.
I'd recommend trying the "firsbee" technique first, but this got the job done for very stuck platters. But be warned, my heads are going crazy now (clicking, beeping, going back and forth), so I"m not sure if that's a related issue or not....
I had the same problem. The noise is the motor trying to work but the platters are seized. I fixed it by taking some channel lock pliers and grabbing the large round center spindle in the middle of the platters and breaking it loose. A few things to remember: 1) watch your platters! Don't even touch them with the channel locks! 2) make sure to squeeze the handles pretty hard. Yes, it will booger the spindle a bit but that's how it'll grip better
That beeping sound is actualy more of a sound either comming from the motor coil it self. Its trying to MOVE the platters but because its stuck its just buzzing.
I have the Same problem.. i was reading on various sites that you can solve this by replacing the SATA CABLE with an INSULATED HIGH QUALITY SATA CABLE.. but i haven't tried it yet
I have the same problem arghh, how can we fix it? mine is seagate barracuda 7200.11 1 tb. I´ve seen the video of brute force unstack. Please, did someone try it?
