1:10 - the sucker sticking to her face!!! What an amazing detail! I wish they'd carried that fantastic little interaction into the final movie. And the squash and stretch on Ursula as she bounces around is much more pronounced. She's so fabulous. hjadhjfkhdsk LOVE IT
You know what? Alot of Disney animators get agitated about the fact that their workplaces are also places where they feel they get watched like zoo animals by tourists coming through on those tours above their heads, but this made me remember- I don't look at them like that when I go. When I go, I just plain LOVE watching them draw these movies into life on their desks. I actually watched someone sitting down and working on Lilo & Stiitch, once when I was 9 and it inspired me.
It's a bit funny.... You can see the process of the artists getting tired of drawing storyboards over the time because the still drawings get messier and messier-looking.
@childofdemonicwind24 "You can see the process of the artists getting tired of drawing storyboards over the time because the still drawings get messier and messier-looking."....LOL...actually, thats not how it works...what you are seeing is different artists contributing to the storyboard process...;)
@UbhikhosiBoKhoKho As I said to Crazycoasterkid21, Pat's voice just fits with this character. It has the perfect sinister sound, fitting for a villain.
@GhostPlanetFilms oh i totally agree with you, she is absolutely FANTASTIC! and she always dreamed of being a disney villain, she is perfect for the role, i'm just sayin.
@InvaderPet Realize animated movies have multiple animators working. Not only does each individual character have their own animator but I believe they (the characters) have whole TEAMS, along with animators for different scenes/numbers. So these storyboard reels are most likely mixes of all the different animation teams coming together. That's why you see alternate versions of chars and very poor, as well as some very well done, sketches.
@InvaderPet "Couldn't the animators HAVE drawn" I believe is what you meant. I really hate to be a grammar nazi, but it seems like people are rapidly forgetting the word "have."
@mrclassickids, no. This was going to be the version in the movie, but they cut some stuff out, including one whole line of the song. They cut these things out early on, before they made the more detailed pictures. They do this with every scene in a movie, but they eventually flesh it out. This actually wasn't the song they would have put in the movie- the other one was called "Silence is Golden".
I hate that they took all references out of the film to the fact that Ursula and Triton were siblings. However at least they had the brains to put that fact back into the story for the broadway musical adaption.
@TimeKaiser if they kept it in, how would that explain ursula being part octopus and triton being a mermaid? Their dad was a merman and their mom was an octopus?
@TimeKaiser I don't mean to be annoying or a know it all. But as far as I've learnt the "sibling" story was something they created for the musical. It was never true for the story in the actual film.
(sorry for wrong english) In series is Ariel fighting with Ursula too. She always knew, that she is evil. But she wanted help from her, because she is just only person, who can help her to be with her true love.
Anybody think the merman in the glasses is supposed to resemble Seymour Krelborn? Yep, I think so! Ater all, the music is a collaboration of Ashman and Menken, the same people who wrote Little Shop of Horrors (musical). Of course, we all know that, right? ;)
I love the suction part, where Ursula's tentacle clings to Ariel's face. So creepy! And "The whole thing was blown out of proportion". Yeah, because a coup isn't a big deal or anything. lol
I'm actually glad that they cut this scene. The fact that Ariel already knows what Ursula has done and still gives her voicebox to Ursula, made her look stupid. It would made me think, "Girl are you crazy!? Why are you trusting this idiot who tried to overthrow dad?!"
In the final version, Ariel is unaware of Ursula's past and future motives so it would make more sense for Ariel to trust Ursula.
@fahmad27 "The sea witch?" - That line there told you that Ariel already knew Ursula was bad news. She already had the knowledge, we, as the audience, never knew that she knew though.
Just to clarify, at 3:31 did Ursula kill that bug thing, crumple it up and feed it to the polyps?? Maybe that's what Smilefumble meant was grim, not the polyps themselves.
At 7:46 the sketch of Ursula looks odd. I lol at Sebastien saying don't be stupid at 4:29! I am glad they cut the stuff about Ursula being banished and the stuff about Ursula going "take my deal!" and what not. Who else here agrees that 3:31 would've been a bit grim for young viewers.
@Gername12 Because the stuff about Ursula being banished was already acknowledged in the beginning of the film, so it wouldn't have helped the scene along much and the stuff about Ursula going "take my deal!" and what not did not help as she already acknowledged that she "isn't" bad anymore at the beggining.
Plus, Come on, 3:31 is grim! They show the remains of the merfolk before they were polyops for goodness sakes!
The extra song part is catchy though. It's a nice addition to keep.
The kids understand the concept, they know what happened to the merfolk. In the movie, we see two merfolk (three if you count triton) turning into polyps. I think showing a hint of what they become wouldn't have been so bad.
Computerish animation is souless, it is not the ''art of animation'' (we can see this at the end of the Credits in traditionally animated features of the Renaissance).
I think that 3D animation (like in the Stampede scene in The Lion King, Deep Canvas in Tarzan, ballroom dance scene in Beauty and the Beast etc.) and Computer effects (like in The Transformation scene in Beauty and the Beast etc.) should only help traditional animation.
Ursala always freaked me out when I was a kid in my opinion she's one of the more threatening scary villain she nearly wins, she even gets the upper hand for quite a while.
@LeonSKennedy828 course not. that's why this fails. in the original story, she has a much better motive. she wants an emmortal soul. why not include that in this movie? it's for kids. we can't have a good story. the only other disney love story i kinda don't buy is aladdin. they bitch about how terrible their lives are to each other and jasmine remembers 4 words aladdin said the first time they met. how convinient. not as bad as this, though.
@robertreturns Weird, I loved Aladdin's love story, the two of them were at opposite ends of the social class system but could still relate to each other about feeling trapped in their lives, and it really worked I feel.
@LeonSKennedy828 maybe it wasn't the relationship, just the movie itself until robin williams showed up. i know disney isn't all comedy, and don't get me wrong. hunchback of notre dame, their most serious film, is my third favorite, but aladdin wasn't too dark either and i was a bit bored until genie showed up.but, yeah, maybe it was the movie itself. the only dark disney moment i don't support is a certain deleted scene from lion kig 2.not that i'm saying it. *cough zira's creepy death cough*
@robertreturns I actually wish that Zira had died that way, it was much more true to her character, she wouldn't have shown fear like that even in the face of death.
@LeonSKennedy828 yes, but i guess it just caught me off guard. i'm on youtube and i find that scene thinking it's a parody, because disney wouldn't actually pull that shit in a film targeted for kids right? then i get the most psychotic villain moment in disney history. and the look on her face.....*shudders.
@robertreturns As I mentioned though, Disney make family films, not kids' films. And Zira was pretty batshit, but I think Frollo could give her a run for her money, he started wrecking a city just because he was lusting over one particular women for crying out loud.
who would win again? i do like frollo but zira is just the best villain disney has probably. yeah, hellfire was a good change of darkness, but his motives aren't as personal. as zira's. besides, she's a lion.
@robertreturns But the extent he went to, and not to mention, he was hellbent on destroying the gypsies, and he was very bigoted and unjust in his actions.
@LeonSKennedy828 true, and i like frollo and think he deserves his praise.(unlike falicier) he does try to burn a girl at stake, drown a baby, lies about his past, lets people torture him publicly, fondles esmeralda, burns a family's house, backstabs the captain, and gives godly people a bad name. he's awesome.
@LeonSKennedy828 princess and frog villain. i think the movie was a right move, but not as good as old disney. facilier doesn't relate to tiana(hero) in any way and doesn't get as far with his plan as most villains do. he transforms a prince and steps on a bug. very fucking impressive. (sarcasm)ursula defeating king trydant has nothing on him. frollo making quasi miserable is a mere joke compared to that. scar killing mufasa is child's play compared to the menace of that guy.
I think that they did right by cutting out a lot of it since it makes Ursula seem more sympathetic and kind than she really is. Although, I do think they should have kept the entire thing until the song starts in the movie since it was never really explained why Ursula was banished from Atlantica in the final cut.
@robertreturns Because it basically gives a method to her madness instead of making her seem simply evil. It explains why Ursula is in the grotto to begin with and why she was banished from Atlantica. Plus, this scene makes her seem nicer to Ariel instead of having her agenda, which is very clear in the movie.
@randmperson2 It's called Deception man, she was supposed to sound nice. Plus, I don't see how this makes her sympathetic. Ariel made it clear that she was trying to overthrow Triton.
