Tough aeroplane, great sound! I hear something else in the background exercising its cs prop ( 0-540 Lyc maybe?? ). Just imagine this Zenair/Corvair with a cs prop, mmmm cs prop droool ( sorry Homer ). Anyway, great aeroplane!!
So how did the Corvair turn out? Was there enough power. How about the weight and balance? I'm thinking of doing a 701/ corvair combination. I understand the 750 would be better for the corvair but i like the 701 for the way the wings fold.
@Bagadaboats Mainly because the exhaust is different between the two, and also the propeller makes a fair amount of noise that you wouldn't hear with a car.
the corvair was chevrolets biggest flop in the history of the company and possibly ever, anywhere. believe it or not, they built the car to compete with the VW beetle... most of them had gasoline powered heaters. but that sure is a cool airplane
To this I would like to ad a big fat WRONG. Corvairs, (Even though they were only made for 10 years0 have to be the best vehicles ever made. And they were made for one resion, to make a sporty compact car with great gas mileage and great performance.
What are you talking about, the Corvair won car of the year in 1960 and then went on to have a total production of almost 1.8 million cars. They were not produced to compete with VW, they were competition with other us compacts. Most 1960 Corvairs had gas heaters as standard and the worked very well and it was an option until 1963. There is a reason that the Corvair still has a large following, they were and are good, fun, reliable cars. 1.8 million cars what a flop. LOL
In response to LTF85199's comment about it not having enough RPM to make a plane fly. Planes do not need a lot of RPM to fly, in fact the plane that I fly you are only cruising at 2300 RPM and around 2600 during takeoff roll. "Automotive" type type engines usually require a drive reduction fro the prop and it is also because automotive type crankshafts cannot deal with the large amount of end thrust on the crank bearings.
What a joke, that is not a car engine! you expect us to believe it? main reason it being super heavy for a plane that size. Insufficient rpm and finally too many things required to keep it running like timing mechanism, alternator Also look the size of the nose a typical four stroke wont fit in that nose assembly if the basic engine block not modified.
A corvair is an air cooled engine (so light weight) and horizontally opposed (hence the shortness of the nose) and you do not need high rpms for an airplane.
insufficient RPM? Car engines would probably need to have a reduction drive between the crank and the prop otherwise the propellor would be spinning far too fast when the engine is most efficient.
what an ungly hard landing!

thats a testament to the rugged gear that zenith uses.

y do airplane piston engine startups and car engine startups sound different if they use a very similar engine

Those wandering about "Car" engines in air craft, look it up in Wiki or Google. Some use Subaru engines as well for instance.

Put a Packard V-1650 (p-51 mustang engine) in the thing nice plane I hope to get the 801 stol

As rough as that landing looks, it's the best example I've seen of what this landing gear assembly can absorb.

is it safe to have a car engine?
I mean isn't there a reason for airplane engines to exist?

its obviously modified and not all car engines can be used, only a few.
