now we are in christmas 2011,i hope that those who was feeling last christmas lonly and depressedthis year are happier and with family and friends ,,mrry christmas
@PhillyRoja That's cool. I celebrate Christmas just for the festivities and the childhood memories and traditions I have ... like decorating etc. However, I celebrate Jesus every day of my life :)
I am 45 years old. We had this on vinyl growing up and I now own it on CD, I could not put up the tree or celebrate the Holidays without it.............. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Joyous Kwanzaa........... we are all one people.......... celebrate that regardless of your God, your religion, your race or creed~~~~~ Embrace our differences.
This is such a haunting melody. But it isn't a folksong - it is a song written based on a scrap of a song - one line in fact - that John Jacob Niles heard being sung on a stage. The little girl only sang the one line. Niles as a well trained musician and song writer and his songs were mostly ballads. This is the one I seem to have the most attachment to.
Christmas is richer and fuller in our house when this album (hahaha I am dating myself) and a few others are played. I am not a fan of her personally but I could listen to her sing forever.
When I was a young boy in the early 70's I would listen to this entire album, alone in my living room, next to the lit Christmas tree and soak in the voice of a goddess. Christmas we never right until I listened to her Christmas Album. I can close my eyes today and go back 40 years and smell the Christmas trees...happier times for sure.
No one actually sings about the goodness MOHAMAD BRINGS. MOHAMAD BRINGS ONLY GRIEF AND DESTRUCTION. IT IS NOT A PEACEFULL RELIGEON THAT BE MUSLUM. Streisand your voice is very special you deliver the words with heart and soul. This is what makes a true person that sings!
lets not forget that shes singing about a jewish man so whats the deal a jewish woman cant sing about the greatest jewish man we all pray to get over yourselves.
It doesn't make sense for an Appalachian folk song to be sung in this manner. I also think Gladys Swarthout's version is odd too??? Trained voices singing it operatic tones can never be anything but juxtaposition at best. Vanessa Williams gets closer. But it was penned from a filthy waif singing as she passed by the composer who added more; passed down for generations of it being sung by poor people... not opera divas. Weird!!!
When we limit music to only performing it in it's original style we kill it. btw. Streisand is a broadway diva not opera, However a lot of great opera singers have done beautiful recordings of this song as well as jazz performers. I just cant see limiting this song to poor people with dulcimers.
That's like saying we should listen to Britney Spears sing opera. Not gonna happen. Too many people would say, ew! what an untrained voice. Either don't limit at all or limit to the genre they belong. We're both entitled to our own opinions. I don't dislike Babs in any way, but she's massacring by not being true to the song's roots.
So I say. I really believed more than anyone else. He did this to me where I have no money. I remember when she said surley he can have it. What does this evil one want, I suffer from not having my kids. SHE TOOK YOU FROM ME. She demands more money. YOU tell HER ITS WRONG. I will no longer accept we all will siffer
Christmas is just 1 month and 2 days away and although I learned as an adult that YESHUA was born sometime in September or October I still LOVE Christmas and the season to me is truly the most beautiful time of year.
Gorgeous song, gorgeous interpretation, gorgeous singer of course. And as for her being Jewish, so were the composers of White Christmas and The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting...) Who knew?
Merriest of Christmases and Happiest of New Year 2010 to everyone.....THIS version takes me to a place in my memory of GREAT introspection, wonder, beauty, reverance, and unfortunately, sadness, I have to admit. No wonder it's such an exquisitely beautiful but sadly haunting song...I had no idea it was written during the Depression. I'll tell ya', it seems to get harder & harder to keep my spirits up as I get older, when I wake up every day & look at REALITY....anyone in agreement?
Although I did not live during the depression,i have my own sweet memories of the holidays. and every year i look forward to christmas... thanks for posting this, newfilmscjc40. may all of you have a wonderful christmas this 2010 and the years to come.
@BigHrdB I have only just seen your post but I hope you are doing well. although I do not know you, I feel your pain when it comes to getting older. Today is my 61st birthday and I have come to know how lucky I am to be alive. Sure, there are many sad and troubling aspects of this life but I love very day and look forward to what is to come. This is a haunting song and the lyrics make me feel good that while we don't know the mind of God, he gave the gift of his son. Merry Christmas.
My favorite Christmas Carol, composed during the Great Depression, sung with such tenderness and expression by the lovely Miss Streisand. Now if only I could locate a suitable choral arrangement and a choir who could perform with such sensitivity - not going to happen. LOL
Thanks for posting this. This was one of my mother's (R.I.P.) favorite Christmas songs. It is such a hauntingly beautiful melody...Both Barbra and the simple, but lovely arrangement, do it justice.
@natlips -and with all her heart! That was always very interesting to me. There is no doubt that it is a very touching version. Beautiful. I have sung it quite a few times with a hush in the crowd...it is so pure and simple, and clear. I love this piece. :)

It's very odd that she sings this, being jewish and the like. However, she performs it really nicely. Its gorgeous.

@Tomeres She is a SINGER...she interprets others songs. Doesn't matter an iota what her "religion" is.
Be silent and just listen to that pristine voice.....THAT's what God (whoever's version) is all about.

@natlips Jesus was Jewish. He was born a Jew, lived a Jewish life, taught and read in the synagogue, and was called 'rabbi' by some of his followers.

@natlips Barbara told in so many interviews along her career that she felts as Christian as Jewish. Her words :
"How can someone not to care for all those beatifull songs, coirls, decoration, especial food. I love Christmas
time, and I'm not less jewish because of that".
I repeat, I heard She saying that on an interview, long ago, can't remember the year, many years ago.
