Accident, luck, skill, whatever..... A very powerful piece you have that captures a moment in time. We have a new crew now so I'm thinking boring but safe and miserable is in my future.
I remember the song from the first time around. I cut my hair decades ago, but this song hasn't lost its power. Listening to it now, in the present atmosphere of political paranoia I even feel a bit nervous.
Thanks Big, I really don't believe you're a loser, if that's why you call yourself that. Anyway, these are the word from a book that I read 30 yrs ago. Spread these words to all you know and maybe it will be like the 100 money theory. Look it up on the internet. Be well and know you are loved
@safefortheozone CSN&Y did a more pointed song about Kent State called "Ohio". I really didn't like it as much as this one. I recorded the tune and then I was searching for some kind of video when I came across this series of stills from Kent State. The two were really unrelated until the last second. I'm pleased and surprised by the reaction that has come from all over the world! None of my other videos have done nearly as well.
@safefortheozone -if you think that your either too young or were asleep at the wheel in the 60's. this song (and i just saw them perform this summer) was indeed and anthem, a call to arms-think nothing less of it.
@safefortheozone Short version, it is a song about the bonds that hold people together, the war being one. I knew back then that was what he meant. That "freak flag" had a lot of meanings. One of them, at least for me and the people I knew, was the war. Turns out hair has nothing to do with how we feel about things, and the familial bond that causes tend to create. We were all so much younger then, and we didn't understand how little appearance really matters.
Thanks to all who ever protested against war, and for peace and freedom. Thank you to all who make music, and to all who share it. You make a better world, much more than you think. To the others: please let's abandon fear, fear makes us mean.
@ladyrock It would be great to abandon war. The problem is you can't get everyone to do it. Hitler was smart enough and ruthless enough to come from no where, subvert an operating democracy and make himself king. (Fuhrer is just another word for king) Then he went to war and took over all of Europe. Stalin did the same thing in Russia. These people have to be stopped in their attempts to take over other countries. Defensive war is the only way.
I said sisters, girls were not drafted, my bad. Really college was almost free at the time so basically seven years wasn't that long to get your degree.
Hey some of you older kids at the time were a bit disingenuous. Let's face it you didn't want to die in a strange country for a bunch of gooks. Neither did I, good move. I can't tell you how many of my friends older brothers in sisters stayed in college for several years to avoid the draft.
never forget may 5 1970 . i watched it on tv when i was 11, yes we did go outside then.way b4 computers at home, the only computers then took up a whole house
Thats rich jcmungus. What are you 12 years old? At least back then we got out and protested war and civil rights, not sitting in our house playing our PS3 complaining about how the world around sucks and it do nothing to change it.
it's time i came clean as well, i'm a russian spy working for the german goverment but i secretly went to america to train they're military. But the talibans blew up california but we had this awesome star wars force from episode II. and president obama had a child: half rambo, half werewolve =]
i just got my lazy fingers going, it said 1970, i thought so, i was only 10 then and can clearly remember that day, i had star trek on ( mom always said ) you got that damn stupid show on again ,( lol ) and the new came on saying there had been 4 people shot at kent state, ( im from toledo ) yea, florida is easier with only one leg, thanks for the reply,
I was 18 in 1969. Was drafted, went to Nam, and came back. But I have to say, that with all the shit in the 60's, it was a blast. Great time to be alive. But then again, anytime is a great time to be alive!
Someone posted that the late 60's early seventies was a weird time in US history, you could say it was part of my California Adventure. The best of times and worst of times, wouldn't have it any other way. By the way my friend saw David Crosby getting busted for gun and drugs on Harbor Blvd. in Costa Mesa. He was working at Fedco at the time. Trip.
A long departed family member loved this song, so i play this in his memory. I was told this song was a summary of his being on this plane of existence. Not to mention his favorite song in life.
Wow you sure found a bunch of Kent State University stuff when the NG shot the students. Brings back a lot of the period for me, not that I was there at KSU but I was a teen in Chicago at the time and my dad was a Chicago patrolman, one of many that had to do their jobs at the DNC and Grant Park, whether they agreed or disagreed. The background shots you have on this would really fit with the Neil Young Ohio song of 1970. The 60's/early 70's was a very weird time in US history
First heard it in the Emilio Estevez directed film The War at Home based on the play of near th same name and its stays with you its such a cult classic written by David(Danny Partridge) Cassidy

It's just about a hippie in the 60s who almost cut his hair. He didn't because he feels he owes it someone. It's a love song.

Have you ever thought that maybe this is just a song about cutting hair and not some sort of anti-war song?
