A Pick is generally used for 'strumming' or playing more than one string at a time. Therefore, it is not ideal to use it on a bass. the only big problem with this (apart from using a pick) is that he is strumming notes on a bass (or leaving more than one playing at once) this makes a BAD sound.

btw,it's called a chord (but i guess "strumming notes" works and how could you say that bass chords sound horrible, bass chords are amazing if played well and with proper equalization (a little chorus makes them sound even better).when you play finger style the notes have a warmer tone, picking has a real edgy tone to it so i just think it's a matter of how you want to sound. all in all, i think that was a really good rendition of mario.

playing two strings is fine on occasion. on cliff burton's solo pulling teeth, you have to play on two strings at points to get the desired sound

backing tracks usually just distract the listener or disguise the vid to make it sound better when it isn't

and guess what. he was playing by himself. so this was a bass solo.
