thank you... thank you... i think chinese characters subs also help me to understand. plus i can learn better pronunciation. i love watching this animation. it teaches me proper northern dialect plus it has less dialogue. so, easier to grab. i would click like 100 times for this video, haha
What I find interesting about Mandarin Chinese is the frequency of "er"s and syllables ending in "er". It's the closest there is to American and Canadian pronunciations of words. ("Words" itself should be easy for a Chinese person to pronounce).
And Dragon Ball as well, obviously. The whole Dragon Ball story comes directly from this, which is part of the acient chinese novel "Journey to the West" in 1550, Mid-Ming Dynasty. Even the name of the main character is identical. Though the dragonball story developed to a different thing, the monkey king there turns out to be an alien.
Like most chinese animation movies in the 60s, 90% of the music and artstyle comes from 300 years of Beijing Opera, even the tone of the dialogues. Another epic masterpiece of this style is "Nezha Conquers The Dragon King". By the way, "Journey to the West" seems to have a deep influence on Inuyasha.
thank you for posting this! i have had a cartoon book (in pure english) of this since a child, but have never found the action film. oh the memories of reading this at night.
I'll admit I really liked that part where Sun Wukong pulls the Ruyi Jingu Bang ("As-you-will Gold-banded Cudgel" or "Compliant Golden-hooped Staff", whichever rendering you prefer) out and shrinks it.
The plot is that Sun Wukong, the monkey king lived a comfortable and freewill life until he was framed up with robbery by the dragon king. So instead of arresting it, the God and his subordinates bribed the monkey king with some positions in the God government. But the two positions were really insulting, e.g. the horse keeper and the gardener. So when the monkey king found out that he was fooled, he chose to fight against the God for his own justice.

Actually, this part of the story is taken from the early chapters of Journey To The West. The Gods later beg Buddha to subdue the Monkey King, which he does by imprisoning him for his insolence.
This is so great, I saw this when I was a kid, my grandfather had it on Betamax tape. I don't know if it still exists or works for that matter. I would really like to have this on DVD, the artstyle and music, just brilliant!!!
Easy now! I haven't seen this since I was about 7 or 8 yrs old. BBC2 had a season of Asian animation, been trying to get old of this for years!!!! It kept me quiet for 45 minutes! Ace.
I LOVE this movie, I remember watching it the first time on TV when I was like 6-7 years old (I'm 23 now) and taped it, I still to this day have the tape.
Is there no way to get subtitles, though, for non-chinese speakers? It'd be awesome if americans could watch this too. I'm guessing you're chinese and can speak/write it? Is it you don't want to do subs, or don't know how to?
Oh man, I haven't seen this in over a decade! My parents had it recorded on VHS tape, but it's forever lost. I recently got the name of this show from the library. Thank you so much for posting this up!
I saw this when I was a little girl. When Channel 4 in the UK went on the air, one of the first things it aired was this movie.
