Does Bill Maher forget that Spanish flu killed over 50 million people in the early 20th Century? If a strain of influenza evolved to spread at the rate of seasonal flu, and had the mortality rate of the Avian flu, millions upon millions of people would die. Civilization as we know it, with it's global interconnected trade and movement, would cease to function,
hmmm I agree with his political points but Bill Maher's stance on medicine is primative and highly inaccurate. Western medicine eliminated smallpox, and polio, it has also increased the lifespans of humans significantly and in addition is on the edge of cloning replacement organs. Its failures are far outnumbered by its successes.
Dont get me wrong i love Bill Maher, I think he is hilarious and seems to have a lot of common sense plus his movie Religulous is great.. Just in this video he has made about 4 comments related to chemistry and health that are so incredibly wrong im not sure what to do with myself..
i like how this canadian show has no debating, but when you look at any other bill maher videos on cnn or any other american network the blood pressure goes through the roof
Uhh, there are actually some pretty good reasons why jello is served in hospitals. It is a great source of protein that people are likely to actually eat, especially sick people who need protein and often have little appetite.
@Lynsey17 Uh, no. "Although gelatin is 98-99% protein by dry weight, it has less nutritional value than many other protein sources. Gelatin is unusually high in the non-essential amino acids glycine and proline (i.e., those produced by the human body), while lacking certain essential amino acids"
@tml4873 The most nutritious source of protein in the world will do nothing if it remains uneaten. Sick people on meds who have little appetite are at least likely to eat the jello since it is easy to eat (no chewing) and presented as a treat. No, it isn't fair to call jello "healthy" but it does provide protein and the human factor is important to consider.
@Lynsey17 It does not contain complete protein, and the protein it does have is negligible. Perhaps there's a placebo effect, but there's no nutritional justification for serving it in hospitals. You'd be exponentially better off just giving patients a small amino acid pill.
It's a small thing, but hearing Bill Maher swear on this show makes me glad that in Canada, people are allowed to swear on TV and not get sued for it.
An Atheist or Agnostic has no reason to be "pissed" when religion propagates their ignorant views against us as unlike you we don't have beliefs we have FACTS not Bronze age hearsay. You don't need religion to believe in a creator, however belief in a god through the myriad of religions out there is completely redicilous. Rather than a "pissed" feeling most of us feel more of a dissapointment that so many religous fanatics are still holding us back from advancing and being a happier people.
@thestoriesofbob I don't care if they're atheists out there, but all I ask is to keep your beliefs to your self. You don't have go on fucking telivision and bash religion acting like a smartass. He bashed my religion christianity which fucking pisses me off. If there was a christian or jew going around bashing atheisim wouldn't you be pissed?
@klutz94306 well i will say that there have been many Christians who do bash on atheists and other religions. On subways, you see signs like "God is good", and what not. It also it depends on where you are. In The United states for example, u have Christian priests who denounce Gays and what not. So to u good sir, I say opinions of any kind should be considered and welcomed. For its difference of opinion that helps make the world progress and turn. (oh and im catholic)
@klutz94306 athiests bash religion in the same way that people mock natzis. Most athiests dont just hate religion for no reason theres alot of problems with religion that effect everyone not only the people who believe in it. Religion has effected the way our world is run in an extremly negative way and so atheiest's have good reason to bash religion where as religous people really have no reason to bash athiests. Every little thing that happens in America causes instant "hystaria." It's the media coverage that makes little things seem enormous. In most cases, it just takes the next "controvertial" story to eliminate the previous event to evaporate.
WOW, I am astounded by Bill Maher right now. I never thought he would come down on the anti-vaccination side after he had the 9/11 truthers thrown out of his show. I know they are different things entirely, but they both have a "conspiracy esque" side to them and usually people in the public eye are either all for or all against conspiracy related things.

I've been a huge Maher fan for as long as I can remember, but this vaccine issue really makes him look like an ignoramus. Bill has a fantastic political brain, but he's out of of his depth when it comes to science. He uses anecdotes, fallacies, and discredited woo when he talks disease -- atypical of his usual approach.
I hope anyone imbibing this stuff as "skepticism" bothers to do the footwork. Dawkins is not with Maher here. Check out Respectful Insolence for a scientific perspective.
how does his views on the vaccine make him look ignorant?. His points are valid. The whole Swine flu thing Has been blown out of proportion. Did you know 13,000 people died world wide from the swine flu?, compare that to the 250,000-500,000 thousand deaths from the regular flu each year....... Just because the large pharmaceutical companies want to vaccinate the whole world over a petty flu, and bill maher doesnt, Does not make him ignorant. I think your the ignorant one.
his stance on vaccines isn't based on his belief that they don't work but his belief that Americans would rather mask their problems with the standard quick fix (but still long-term hinderance) solutions. This includes our medicine and diets. He understands that vaccines work in the short term but they often, through coercing stronger mutations of a virus, have long term ramifications (particularly vaccines that are rushed to the market). Americans accept pharmaceuticals w/o question.
@jwervel16 You must work for a pharmaceutical company? Polio was real, mumps and measles real... swine flu please! Stop eating crap and go for a walk, we have immune systems for a reason.
The old and the sick may benefit from this vaccine but a young healthy person would not.
Writing this Nov 16 2010 after the swine flu scare, it was blown out of proportion the world did not die and pharmaceutical companies got rich, Bill was right!

About Maher (I was not criticizing him specifically - he IS funny and excellent in what he does or I wouldn't watch him) Comedians have traditionally played the role of lampooning the media, not becoming the story. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert do this very well. They lampoon the very concept of the "expert" commentary. What these pundits are really expert in , as all media personalities are who become popular, is in moving the dial. Ratings.
It's refreshing when Bill Maher gives decently informative, interesting, REAL responses to questions about getting his career started etc. Almost no actor/TV type does that. Just bland "oooh I worked with such WONDERFUL people blah blah"

Ahhhh, wise and eloquent words from a journalist. The Armed Forces Radio went to shit when we lost our military journalists to the liberal wing nuts currently embedded with our troops. Youd rather hang a fellow American to cloak your righteous elitist views. Your time is numbered, America has Awakened.
@USNChiefC You mean they actually reported instead of parroting back command propaganda? When someone talks about elitists, what they really mean is "someone not a stupid, common conformist like me"
it's a shame that the people running things aren't more like Bill Maher. But normal people like Bill Maher just like to make fun of the people in power.

Ratings.

So true about young comedians just being someone else. I do stand up, I see it all the time, and I've done it. Thanks for posting.

I also thought of that.

I don't know why the CBC is posting this now/again. I saw this a few months ago, I think it was the CBC that had it on youtube, but it could have been another user.
Oh well...Bill is still the man.
