The Cowsills & The Tokens are playing a free concert on labor day weekend sunday september 4, 2011 at The Cannery Casino Hotel Resort Las Vegas Nevada.
I just think it sad when a person as big as Joan Rivers knows so little about her guest! With the money they make learn to read about whose things you need to know and ask about and do a better job, and Yes I love my Joean Rivers but she sucked on this set, or may it is because I love my Cowsills, but not to know whom is die or alive, and to ask the kids?, bad form Joan!
They're not saying anything bad about their dad, Bud, but when he banished Billy for smoking a joint he made a horrible mistake as a parent. Billy had so much talent it was scary. Many of Billy's performances are here on youtube, of course
Royal Carribbean cruise 1988...docked in San Juan...did not see this in person but heard about it on board. She tried to get on board (guessing just to view the ship...doubt she had any negative agenda...) but thankfully RCCL's security did not allow it. She is just 'pushy' and most likely tried to take advantage of her 'celebrity'. In fairness to her, her staff at the time of this show should have done advance research regarding the wonderful Cowsill family and the status of their late Mom.
@tunesmith09 Just relax. That's just her style and the Cowsills seemed perfectly relaxed with her. She wasn't rude or disrespectful, she just states the obvious... so what.
They just performed in Annapolis at the Ram's Head last Friday. You could've scraped me up off the floor- incredible show! And, just for the record, I'm not an oldies fan. Everything was vital & tight- their old hits, cover songs, newer originals. Susan is as electric of a vocalist as you will ever hear. If there was any justice in the world, this band would be a major act again.

My sister and I were at the same concert at Ram's Head in Annapolis on July 16, 2010, and they were FANTASTIC! We were impressed with their harmonies, their performance (loved their rendition of "The Boxer"), and Susan's "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, and their down to earth personalities. We greeted Susan before the show, and also did the meet and greet (w/autographs and allowing us to pose with them for pictures. We will definitely see them again next year!
I agree, they should Joan should have had the facts ahead of time. I miss Barry and Bill but their mom was such a sweet lady and They will always be in my heart and prayers! You know, I am confused. I saw interviews with these folks a few years ago and they made it clear they felt very angry toward their Father, and had, in fact, disowned him!

You know what, unless you were there, you shouldn't be judgmental of other people. For god sake, no wonder her husband committed suicide , It was the only way he could get some peace. Anyone see her lately, she looks like a mixture of the scarecrow from the wizard of oz and the Joker from Batman.
Yea, you said it - what an idiot. Too bad Billy wasn't there (or was he already deceased?. Dont know when this was aired.)
As I understand it Billy was really the most gifted, but they all are great. I've seen Susan in other videos & honestly think she has some of the best pipes on the planet.
Now that I think about it, the comment she made about their father ruling with an iron hand makes me wonder if she has the Cowsills confused with the Beach Boys. Either way, you're right on ri95 saying she didn't do her homework.
Obviously, some of you here cannot read people very well. They ( The Cowsill ) are not hyper, drugged up on anything, irritating, uncomfortable, or anything else you may come up with. If you knew them as well as I do, you would know they are perfectly normal people, normal to a fault. If some of you don't see hyper drugged up people, you are in doubt about them. That says a lot about you. Have you ever heard the saying, " Silence is Golden"???
Man, I don't think there is an introvert in the group - they are all so hyper, emotive and talkative. Joan is almost the quiet one here - go figure that one.
stoicjello, I beg to differ with you. I think they did fantastic. Wonder how you would do if they put you in front of a live nationwide camera and a live audience. At this point in time they had been in front of nationwide cameras for over 20 years. They don't appear uncomfortable at all. How would you do if you were in that seat!??
This was an extremely irritating and annoying interview. I agree, it's obviously been a while since they've been on camera. They're nervous and trying too hard to be hip and funny and that made this interview very uncomfortable to watch.
Barbara lost her battle with emphysema in 1985.. Hurricane Katrina took away Barry in 2005.... And Billy went to join his mom(Barbara) and brother(Barry) in Rock-N-Roll Heaven, after he succumbed to emphysema. Their dad/manager, "Bud " Cowsill crossed over in 1992, following his bout with illness. I remember The Cowsills and their music back in the 60's, with their tight harmonies and groovy sound. They rock!!!! :)
financial situations...why are we so intrigue by how much people make...do your millions and you will find out how it feels when people ask you!!!so dumb!!!!
Yes,unfortuately my step-father Bill died march '06,and then my mother Mitzi followed soon afterward. They are survived by myself and my brother Del Cowsill.Del has followed his father's avocation, and lives in Toronto.I live in Vacouver, and live the rock'n roll life.
Judging by this interview, it must have been a long time since they've been in front of the camera. Overly anxious, cutesy and annoying. Doesn't wear well. Neither does Joan Rivers.
Billy was by far the best and the only one with any talent. He ended up in Canada, started a band called the Blue Shadows (awesome band, makes the rest of the family look like douchebag fairies. search the band on utube) Billy was a country rock rebel who was known to smash his guitar across peoples heads
@nielset - - I have The Blue Shadow's YouTube videos stored as a favorite playlist. I love their music. Too bad I learned about them 15 years too late to see them perform live. They would have been worth a trip up to Vancouver. Also, although I did know that Billy had some personal problems, I didn't realize he was to blame for the breakup of The Blue Shadows. How very sad.
Wow, for a family that gave us such beautiful music back in the day, how sad was this to watch?!? And plastic face, well, if she's not ashamed of her surgeon, she should be ashamed of this interview. Loved the music you gave us Cowsill family and RIP to the members no longer with us on earth.
Joan Rivers really bombed on this one. Asking them where their Mother is. She should have done a little more research first, then she'd know their Mom is deceased.
Joan Rivers did not know that they stopped making music or that their Mother died ! The interview is so annoying they seemed like coked up 5 year olds ! I could not make it through the whole interview....... Yes, I am a fan !
You know, there is such a thing as adult ADHD! As for the English accent it sounds like that was just a joke. Don't get me wrong I was one of their biggest fans back in the 1960's and early 1970's.
I saw Susan Cowsill and her talented band live here in Kansas City on 7/15/09 and despite the ups and down of her (as well as the rest of The Cowsills) career, she is making some really good music right now and at 50, still sings beautifully. She is recording a new CD called " Lighthouse" and played several strong songs from it the other night, as well as a few songs from her wonderful former band, The Continental Drifters. It was a show that definitely exceeded my expectations!
Dang, I remember the Joan Rivers show, 1986(?). They didn't need Sherwood and it's a good thing they didn't hook up with that. They had their own thing going on.
There's no harmony like family harmony and the Cowsill's were naturals. Though they didn"t write The rain, the park, and other things , it is still my favorite song and always sounds fresh to me. This family had real talent and musical substance.
They had a really wierd life from what I read, did'nt their mom die in a mental instatution? And their dad stole most of there money and moved to mexico? They all seem quite crazy. But what God given talent.
OK, here is what I know, I am from Rhode Island. I know that last time I spoke with Bobby, was around 1994 or so. i know their mom used to work as a Nurse in a Providence RI hospital.
I think but do not quote me one of them passed away during the KATRINA HURRICANE, but I am not sure However I have heard this from a few people
Google: American Patriot Jeff Fisher loves forever webmistress Jane Bowell et Jesus the Christ et America

Remember forever Jennifer Lynn Masaryk Ellis.
Dedicated to Peter Joyce & Lady Diana my dear departed friends.
Part of the story is documented by music videos of The Blue Shadows; a Vancouver based Country Rock group that Billy founded in the mid 90's. They are up on YouTube now.
It seems to be when someone suffers from mental illness they tend to try and pull off a british accent, Madonna did it Britany Spears also had this problem, that is unless they got a stand in for 1 of the Cowsills who couldn't be at the interview??..now what is the name of that illness there has to be some sort of explanation at least one would think so.
What's up with Susan's hair? It looks like she just stepped out of the shower, let it dry way.. and went to the interview. :-)
I like this family. They all grew up very well. Susan could use some hair tips though. It's not a good sign when your brothers' hairdos are better than yours.
I am now at a few minutes into this and it is making me ill. Joan is a trainwreck. One cowsill is speaking with a fake accent. They are defending their abusive father. Therapy might help them grasp reality.
susan and joan r catty right from the start. susan could have done better by not being defensive. but joan could have been more gracious and less prying.
I recently purchased 'Global' the 1990 Cowsills album as an MP3 dowload and it is great! There are some really good songs like 'Is it any Wonder?' and 'You've got no Time'.
I feel sorry for the family after watching this interview. When I read up on their story a few years back, and how the mother was institutionalized at one point and how dad made bad investments and lost all the money...it's just sad.
Armham78 I wonder if it was a result of nervousness, they look really excited to be on the show. They seem to have really loved their mom very much. He probably watched this later and winced when he realized what he did!
Love these guys, so talented and quirky. Rediscovered them on Youtube, love their performances and they are still performing now, they are excellent. Sad to learn they lost Barry and Bill in 2005. Not surprising that they ran into financial troubles at one time, so did a lot of bands - it's hard to make a buck much less keep it in show business, even if you watch the money you can get ripped off, lots of people with their hands out. They love life and enjoy their music - much more important.
The "concrete" comment is a veiled reference to Paramount basically stonewalling them. When they staunchly refused to do the "Partridge Family" without Barabara [definitely a dealbreaker] Paramount took a lot of the writing and producing talent [read the names on the first Partridge Family LP and compare] They also got the New Christy Mistrels to re-record "Love American Style" and stopped using their version in the credits taking away revenue. Most of the bad press about them was generated by..
The Partridge Family was not from Paramount, it was Columbia Pictures Studios/Screen Gems. Love American Style was a Paramount production, but Tom & John Bahler, Ron Hicklin, and Jackie Ward did those vocals after the Cowsills. Those vocalists were the Partridge Family background singers.
I met the cowsills in Waukesha Wisconsin. They were very friendly and a lot of fun to talk to ! Joan did not research them well'a casual observer from China would have known that their mother was dead. Also Joan should have asked questions directly to each Cowsill. The concrete was a joke, you know the mafia put concrete on people and dropped them in the river if anyone pissed them off. The fact that the money was mismanaged is painful . I wish them all the best.
I would have loved to meet them also, I always loved their music too. Im not a fan of Joan Rivers too, shes too outspoken without thinking. The comment on their mother, should have embarrassed her since she didnt know anything about them, or why they disbanded. They are a great family and I love to see them perform today too. I loved the Partridges and their music, but love the real Cowsills harmony!
Paul, Susan & Bob Cowsill are playing BB Kings in New York City on July 28. Its the first NY show in 17 years performing as The Cowsills. I can't wait.
They're "hyper/annoying" cuz nervous about: 1) answering ques re: money (esp. if daddy involved w/mob which wdn't doubt) 2) being accepted with the audience (people pleasers) and are trying too hard 3) keeping THE family SECRET-- when they said "dad told us not to mention him" I seriously doubt it was outta modesty... to me, it screamed "DO NOT MENTION WHAT I DID TO YOU" How sad they covered up for "dad" on the show as adults. Hope surviving members got help and are happier.
It was sad to watch this. After the death of their dad, they let him have it, but good, and told horible stories of abuse on Enetrtainemnt Tonite, in 2005.
sure I understand they need to do new music but don't foget alot of us loved their music back then and today still enjoy it so appreciate your old fans
I met them yesterday when they appeared on my show. They were still doing the english accent thing and I think its a family inside joke thing. It might be because they were so heavily influenced by the Beatles. They are incredibly charming and their jokiness comes from their innate desire to be people pleasers. I look forward to seeing them perform again tonight.
I notice here that they're all claiming to be "poor" but I know that certianly JOHN wasn't poor at the time this was filmed, having worked steady in the Rock music biz with quite a number of successful artists. He worked quite steady in the '80's. '90's and STILL does so today, and is in the current Beach Boys lineup.
yeah, i wanted to slap that guy!

@kirbygene The Cowsill's Dad, Bill, died in 1992.
Joan Rivers daytime show (not that stupid Late Show) began airing in 1989.
And in this interview, the Cowsills mention that they are doing 1990s music.
So it was taped between 1990-1992.

To me they just seem to be excited, and full of energy...which is what U want from TV guests.
Joan could have been better prepared tho.
Wish the clip included their great singing too.

Joan Rivers did not know that they stopped making music or that their Mother died ! The interview is so annoying they seemed like coked up 5 year olds ! I could not make it through the whole interview....... Yes, I am a fan !

They were cool, coked or not...they seem like they loved each other and that is the joy and I feel their happiness.

Part of the story is documented by music videos of The Blue Shadows; a Vancouver based Country Rock group that Billy founded in the mid 90's. They are up on YouTube now.

OMG, I am mentally ill.........well, bloody that
Wales223 2 years ago
It seems to be when someone suffers from mental illness they tend to try and pull off a british accent, Madonna did it Britany Spears also had this problem, that is unless they got a stand in for 1 of the Cowsills who couldn't be at the interview??..now what is the name of that illness there has to be some sort of explanation at least one would think so.

What's up with Susan's hair? It looks like she just stepped out of the shower, let it dry way.. and went to the interview. :-)
I like this family. They all grew up very well. Susan could use some hair tips though. It's not a good sign when your brothers' hairdos are better than yours.

worst interview i have ever seen
pOBrain 3 years ago
I am now at a few minutes into this and it is making me ill. Joan is a trainwreck. One cowsill is speaking with a fake accent. They are defending their abusive father. Therapy might help them grasp reality.

I feel sorry for the family after watching this interview. When I read up on their story a few years back, and how the mother was institutionalized at one point and how dad made bad investments and lost all the money...it's just sad.
gwenny3080 3 years ago 2
I never recall seeing them on tv until recently 'discovering' them on youtube...they really are awesome and Susan's dancing was adorable!
forsythia77 3 years ago
Armham78 I wonder if it was a result of nervousness, they look really excited to be on the show. They seem to have really loved their mom very much. He probably watched this later and winced when he realized what he did!
forsythia77 3 years ago
Love these guys, so talented and quirky. Rediscovered them on Youtube, love their performances and they are still performing now, they are excellent. Sad to learn they lost Barry and Bill in 2005. Not surprising that they ran into financial troubles at one time, so did a lot of bands - it's hard to make a buck much less keep it in show business, even if you watch the money you can get ripped off, lots of people with their hands out. They love life and enjoy their music - much more important.
forsythia77 3 years ago
The "concrete" comment is a veiled reference to Paramount basically stonewalling them. When they staunchly refused to do the "Partridge Family" without Barabara [definitely a dealbreaker] Paramount took a lot of the writing and producing talent [read the names on the first Partridge Family LP and compare] They also got the New Christy Mistrels to re-record "Love American Style" and stopped using their version in the credits taking away revenue. Most of the bad press about them was generated by..
Harvey3rdman 3 years ago

I wish them all the best.
mariebabylon 3 years ago 3
I would have loved to meet them also, I always loved their music too. Im not a fan of Joan Rivers too, shes too outspoken without thinking. The comment on their mother, should have embarrassed her since she didnt know anything about them, or why they disbanded. They are a great family and I love to see them perform today too. I loved the Partridges and their music, but love the real Cowsills harmony!

Paul, Susan & Bob Cowsill are playing BB Kings in New York City on July 28. Its the first NY show in 17 years performing as The Cowsills. I can't wait.

man, they're burned out.
thespookyone65 3 years ago
They're "hyper/annoying" cuz nervous about: 1) answering ques re: money (esp. if daddy involved w/mob which wdn't doubt) 2) being accepted with the audience (people pleasers) and are trying too hard 3) keeping THE family SECRET-- when they said "dad told us not to mention him" I seriously doubt it was outta modesty... to me, it screamed "DO NOT MENTION WHAT I DID TO YOU" How sad they covered up for "dad" on the show as adults. Hope surviving members got help and are happier.
sgar777 3 years ago 2
It was sad to watch this. After the death of their dad, they let him have it, but good, and told horible stories of abuse on Enetrtainemnt Tonite, in 2005.

ladm112 4 years ago
I met them yesterday when they appeared on my show. They were still doing the english accent thing and I think its a family inside joke thing. It might be because they were so heavily influenced by the Beatles. They are incredibly charming and their jokiness comes from their innate desire to be people pleasers. I look forward to seeing them perform again tonight.
bcanton 4 years ago 3
Thanks bcanton good to know more about the english accent thing, it just shows how close they are that they have in jokes like that!
forsythia77 3 years ago
I notice here that they're all claiming to be "poor" but I know that certianly JOHN wasn't poor at the time this was filmed, having worked steady in the Rock music biz with quite a number of successful artists. He worked quite steady in the '80's. '90's and STILL does so today, and is in the current Beach Boys lineup.
