@thekrupaman - that is exactly the point! If it were some guy who simply beats away we wouldn't be interested. But this is indeed a superb drummer, young guy, and nobody knows who he is!
@thekrupaman - Another possibility is Andy Picardi who was also in Hackett's band around this time. His Italian sounding name fits his looks, but until contemporary photos of him (and Blowers) turn up we can't be certain.
@thekrupaman Danny A;vin has been suggested before but it isn't him either. Alvin looks different. Besides, he was born in 1902 so he would have been 36 in this film. This drummer is clearly much younger than 36.
My final comment on the mystery drummer(before it becomes obsessive) is from the site JAZZ LIVES which also has this clip ....."the showy drummer" may be Andy Picardi from Bobby Hackett's Big Band. Not definitive but his physical appearance seems to show Southern European heritage.
It's a guess but you could very well be right. I'll upload Chauncey Morehouse's solo number from the SATURDAY NIGHT SWING CLUB later this month. It's not jazz but there are many Chauncey fans out there.
harry as a new subscriber i have just found AT THE JAZZ BAND BALL posted by you from the session i referred to. Boy, do i feel foolish. Put it down to fading memory rough similarity of titles and the Bix connection. More importantly, i wouldnt have a clue what Chauncey looks like!
sorry harry a closer inspection of a reference book JAZZ IN THE MOVIES lists a Vitaphone short THE SATURDAY NIGHT SWING CLUB also 1938 with Bobby Hackett and his Boys with Chauncey but not playingJAZZ ME BLUES
I've been mentally running through all the "obvious" names for drums and this guy isn't any of them. No Buzzy, No Johnny Blowers, no Dave Tough, No Wettling. Probably someone we SHOULD know!
I would have said Buzzy Drootin but apparently not-great though to see Brad Gowans in action and of course a very young Bobby Hackett.

Al Sidell,Marty Greenberg,Don Carter ? just clutching at straws.

It's annoying.I thought I knew all Condon's drummers from this period. This guy is too good to be unknown.

The only other drummer i can think of is Johnny Blowers who would have been 27 at this time.

the drummer is not Tough or Drootin I reckon it is Danny Alvin.

Yeah! Mystery solved! The drummer is, indeed, a "young Buzzy Drootin" some fifteen years before he became a regular Condonite.
jimcftu 10 months ago
@jimcftu No the mystery is not solved. This is not Buzzy Drootin - young or old.
harryoakley 10 months ago
@jimcftu Buzzy Drootin's son Tony has confirmed that his father is NOT the drummer here!

I do not know who the drummer is but I do know for sure that it is NOT Dave Tough. Nice video...thx

Is it just me, or can anyone else not hear the plectrum guitar?
MrRandomman123 1 year ago
@MrRandomman123 Although Condon was always in charge and fronted his band as guitarist, few people have ever actually HEARD Condon's guitar!

How wonderful to see Brad Gowans in action-a great valve trombone player who died young-just 51 in 1954. Nice ensemble sound he gets.

I'll toss in another possibility for the drummer's identity that hasn't been suggested here yet - Dave Tough.

No this is not Dave Tough.
harryoakley 1 year ago
@Ode2Pops It's Buzzy Drootin.

Meanwhile, what a great driving and harmonically rich lead Bobby plays! One can listen to it over & over; what spirit!

Is that Stan King on drums?

Maybe someone can tell us who he is - but it's definitely not Stan King. Excellent drummer though!

That isn't a young Buzzy Drootin, is it??

The clarinetplayer is Ernie Caceres, a largely underestimated clarinet- and baritonesaxplayer.

Not Buzzy.
