People also need to realize how good Gonzaga really is. They were a projected contender early this year. They stumbled, but are back to playing the way they were supposed to be. This team has loads of unbelievable talent.
Vitale didn't get owned. He made an intelligent argument and made better points than Bilas and Phelps. Gonzaga is a "name" and power conference teams are willing to play them because it's a no-lose scenario. St. Mary's doesn't have that same luxury. Arizona is a mediocre team that received an at-large bid based on reputation. I'm not a fan of St. Mary's or Arizona but I call BS when I see it.

saint mary's is doing well in the NIT, if they win it, what are you gonna say there
in my opinion, winning the NIT is equivalent to making it to the sweet 16 in NCAA
now if arizona wins another game, or SMC doesnt win the NIT, then vitale is wrong, if zona loses and SMC wins, Vitale isnt right, but it goes to show either team could have been selected

SMH @ This clown and at the idea that St. Mary's should be in the tourny coming from the horrible WCC conference with a sorry pre-season schedule. Jay Bilas owned Dick and the main reason is because he is right.
I love the first question posed to dick: "do you think St. Mary's is better than Arizona head-to-head." Not in Arizona worst year would they lose to a Steve Nash-less St. Mary team.

Perhaps I should have made it clearer, but my point was that AZ wasn't losing to any WCC team that lacks Steve Nash. As far as I know, this is their only WCC loss in 25 years. Not on the same level.

He probably feels stupid right now. Arizona got out of the first round. St. Mary's probably wouldn't have beaten Utah. If St. Mary's was good enough to make the tourney, they wouldn't have gotten blown out by Gonzaga in the WCC championship game.

if arizona was actually a good worthy team they wouldnt have lost 13 games and woud not have choked down the stretch of the season, all of that with biger recruits and more talent than st. mary's. Arizona = underachievers making sweet 16 due to pure raw recruit talent that is performing the way it should

Big schools are scared of smaller teams, and they refuse to have home-and-home series'.
It wasn't St. Mary's fault that many of the better teams they scheduled sucked this year. Their record and RPI were still better than Arizona's.

Uh, no. Big schools hold the cards and they know it. They aren't going to go home and home in most cases. Bilas is right. If teams like Gonzaga and Xavier can get teams to play them and win, there's no excuse St. Mary's can't. They had some bad luck, but now they know not to rely on a few teams being decent, and prove they belong.

Thank you Vitale! Dicky V is right on the money here. Jay Bilas has proved, time and again, that he's in the tank for the big conferences. Of all these "so called" experts, he continues to demonstrate the least bit of objectivity when it comes to the tournament selection. Why is it so hard for this egg head to consider the possibility of a smaller school being better than one coming from a power conference?

I agree with Vitale on this. It is funny how they all bully him though. It is nice for someone to stick up for the little school. I think St. Mary's deserved better, Arizona is going to get waxed in the first round. I don't think the same would happen to the Gaels.
People also need to realize how good Gonzaga really is. They were a projected contender early this year. They stumbled, but are back to playing the way they were supposed to be. This team has loads of unbelievable talent.

Vitale didn't get owned. He made an intelligent argument and made better points than Bilas and Phelps. Gonzaga is a "name" and power conference teams are willing to play them because it's a no-lose scenario. St. Mary's doesn't have that same luxury. Arizona is a mediocre team that received an at-large bid based on reputation. I'm not a fan of St. Mary's or Arizona but I call BS when I see it.
