  • Beautiful

  • i dont know the name of this great dancer but it is really nice indian classical dance ........really amazing one......i want to know the name of this great dancer...

  • i wonder how classical this dance really is?

  • Owesome.. I love this song great maanada.

  • The current crop of Music director and singers (e.g. Rehman) are simply mediocre compared to the people behind this song.

  • old is not gold old is diamond :)

  • Manna Dey is like a prophet of Music for me

  • Superb composition by Roshan Sahab , Father of Rakesh & Rajesh Roshan and Grandfather of Hritik Roshan. Most talented family

  • all the credit for this song goes to the girl ,who's dancing made this song immortal.

  • wow

  • some one also wrote some thing (wrongly, Please read about Dhrupad) about tarana! Apparently Tarana style is credited to Amir Khusro but he is more Known for Kawwali style of musical worship! Trana existed even before khusro as an Ang (part) of Dhrupad singing! The syllables of Tarana are supposed to be the worship of God mentioned in pnemonics! The syllables are seemingly incomprehensible but are the symbols of the words used to describe God during worship through the medium of Music!

  • some body has already answered this but wrong ly This song was written by Sahir Ludhiyanvi the greatest poet philosopher whomthe filmIndustry took to heart and imortalised his songs/lyrics nazms and sufiana creations like this one! laga Cunari mein daag is the refrain from a tradirional creation borrowed by Sahir ji and he weaved a tapetry of immeasurable beauty and words pregnant wuth meaning! The composition is in Raag Ahir Bhairav and NOT bharavi! It is thought provoking and very moving!

  • This is definitely one of his classics. The toughest classicals were always given to him.

Unfortunately Manna Dey is one of the least recognised singers of those times.

  • Moral reflects our urge of worldy material things. Sent clran but we hardly strive to remaom clean! What will we answer our creator for unhidable stains on our lives?

  • yar who has uploaded this s ong pleze send all information of the song like singer ,music director ...plez this song is excllent

    very very thanks for uploading

  • her name at the time of the movie was padmini priyadarshini. her last name is ramachandran now. she acted in jus a few movies. she teaches dance. i learn from her. she is a great teacher as well.

  • Remember my dad. I grew up listening to all those old songs. We cannot find such lyrics, music, actors, infact no comparison with nowadays dirt that is in the films. Yet, these film stars are making more money acting with half naked bodies.

  • nice thumri!

  • nice thumri

  • One of the best songs of Mannada, This recollects of my childhood days where my father used to sing this song often for us. Gud lyrics, gud song, and great voice. Indeed I pity those 5 who have disliked this song they do not have sangeeth gand at all......................................................

  • This is from 'The Light of Music- ROSHAN''

who once wanted to commit suicide after the his initial failure in Neki aur Badi.

One of the finest from Manna Dey !

  • Ya today (24 Oct,2010 at 10.07AM, a friend ask me to watch movie (laga chunari main dagh), so i watched, an emotional and wonderful somngs, but as a story of song concerned, I wish for all my words women, God give them power to fight against those and also save them ever. • awesomeness!!!!!

  • this man is a master of his time... zaberdast!

  • My mom's FAVOURITE singer of all time! This man brings her to tears...he's a genius!

  • Absolute authority over voice and expressions. Everything right about it. The dancer and vocalist complement each other so well.

  • Manna Dey is an evergreen singer. Who wrote the lyrics for this song?

  • Manna Dey is truly a great singer! Will we ever again see a singer like him again? Ever?

  • spiritual secret is beatifully disclosed here.......

  • awesome performance in both singing this masterpiece and dancing to it. ty 4 posting

  • u r spoton vkhawani

  • Manna Dey is Always great ..........

  • Manna De is a talented singer. The dancer is south India's Priyadarshini.

  • owsam song

  • old is always gold

  • @upenjoshi Not always. Would you prefer an old car or a new one?? :)

  • @upenjoshi

Yes, old is gold. Because old was concerned by the soulness of musicality. Not like today's mainstream shit. Only few today can come close to those golden days.

  • perfect singer....stunning dance..........

  • Probably most versatile Indian singer , should have got recognition much much earlier.

I will place Manna Dey after Bhupen Hazarika, all time greatest singer.

No contemporary singer will ever come close to singing this song.

  • i happened to attend Manna Dada's concert in August this year in New York. I was bowled by his control on his voice and melody in his voice at an age when many of us would be finding difficult to speak. Congrats Dada for being awarded Phalke Award and I wish you many more melodious years

  • True. I was fortunate to watch him in Madison Square Garden in 2006-07- even at this advanced age he wanted to sing few more songs.

Amazing commitment to music. Its Bhagwan's blessings without which its no possible.

  • Congrats to Dada. The award is honoured by being given to you!

  • one of the living legend of our country ,.at least our Sarkar wake up to recognize him-thanks to our our selection committee-no congratulation- he is above all this award -is in our heart & soul.

  • congratulation Manna Da for Dada Shaeb Phalke. You mesmerized us with your heavenly voice.

This is one of the most difficult of hindi music ever composed and its one and only dada did the justice to it. Its a philosophical song composed by Roshan and written by none other than Sahir Ludhianvi.

  • CONGRATS MANNA DE for DADA SAHEB PHALKE AWARD ...

  • good song..good meaning..

  • a double meaning song ......

these the second meaning is lewd ...

in those days the second meaning was spiritual.

    absolutely facinating

  • yeah exactly this also has a rahasyavadi meaning.....where a soul(atma) repents that it has done some pap(worldliness) in its sasural (the world) and now it is ashamed to meet the parmatma.

at one point it explains this in the para...." kori chunariya atma mori, mail hai mayajaal.....wo duniya more ababul ka ghar....."

    beautiful lyrics

  • this is very spiritual sond and manna ji has done a big favour to us by giving his precios voice to it,.

  • As for specific meaning of words and phrases, it is:

    CHUNRI = soul (atma)

    DAAG = paap-karma

KORI CHUNARI = soul free of paap-karma

BABUL KA GHAR = siddha state where soul is free of karma and free of life and death cycle. It is not heaven. Jainism explains this best.

SASURAL = life as a living being

MAYL = MAYA (as it states in the song itself, "mayl hai maya-jaal")

  • oh...so these words have a double double meaning?

  • because you could also take it literally.

  • Great song! There is nothing terribly hard about the meaning of the song. The message is simply to stay away from paap-karma, keep our soul clean and achieve a state of freedom from karma.

  • manna dey is really too good

  • written by Bhagat Kabir....around 13th century.....It is addressed to God Almighty.

    Babool...here means God...

Babool ka Ghar....God himself present in his house...how do I hide the sin thus far commited........................Kapeesh...!

  • what page is this tune?

  • Amazingly beautiful!

  • It is painful to see the singer of such spellbinding songs still taking the stage at this age to sing and belittling his singing genius with absolute lack of what was once just splendid control over his voice.

  • Manna De - At his best !!! Bind Blowing!! Why dont we get such Singers in Hindi Play back now?

  • This song has a very very spiritual meaning behind.Gud luck to those who can interpret

  • why? what is the real meaning of this song? bachpan sey sun raha hu, kuch jayda samaj nahi aya. :(

  • Hi Chitu, bachpan se sunte aye ho lekin gana sirf gana raha.Go beyond the song .U are a liar coz u r a very educated fellow even u said u never gone to school. Appreciate your humility yaar.Go ask a real swami(enlightened being) or a real pundit or rishi(who are very very rare these days in the World) the real spiritual meaning of the words of this song. Lords Krishna,Jesus. Mohammed. Confucuis,Budha etc have been embodied in a human form in Mauritius. Tumhare chunri mein bahut daag hai.Socho

  • shandaar son i have ever heard

  • This song has a very very profound spiritual meaning behind.Look for a real sage or rishi and he will unravel to you the mystery of the universe.

  • One of the best of Manna Dey

  • Great song! A rare classic...such a deep metaphor and yet a bueautiful tune!

  • The metaphorical use of romantic and sensual themes is indeed very common in classical songs, bhakti-inspired songs, and Sufi ghazals. The poets sometimes used this duality to explain the interconnectedness between secular and spiritual expressions of love not to separate them, for to them the divine was REFLECTED in the secular. I wonder if you know who the lovely and gifted dancer is. She is not Padmini as someone suggests below. Thank you.

  • I see that the name actually is Padmini Priyadarshini rather than just Padmini; the latter was the most famous of the great Travancore sisters and dancer-heroine in many beloved old movies. Please disregard my question.

  • wonderfull art dance

  • Poet clearly says kori chunariya ATMA mori. mel(smear) is MAYA-JAAL. Now that is to me more then just physical. But you are free to interpret as you wish.

  • Hi aceji, u r absolutely right. Its much much more beyond the physical thing. The 'daag" starts from the very first human in this world some millions of years ago who 'sinned' But what is a sin or 'daag'. A sin is a thought, word or action done unconsciously. We are more than 95% unconscious. With only 5% consciousness humanity has 'achieved' that much we can see. But what do we see?Technology, IT, robots, buildings, ets etc.Very gud. But then? Everywhere is dark and negative.Psitive?Count it.

  • this is the inability of the deflowered virgin to face the very same people, who had subtly and openly proscribed her from sexual experience, after her nuptials.

This is the anguish of the soul to reconcile between the past restrictions and the present liberties.

New rules make way for removal of the earlier restrictions. LIFE HAS TO GO ON, but it cannot be premature.

  • Bit of a fool am I. Please elaborate.

  • Jeo ustaad jeo

  • Its more about us women in society, all women who get raped by disgusting rapers, the society's judgement and how can she face the world ...

  • The song seems to be about a girl feeling guilty about her spollt chunri and how she will see eye to eye with her babul!! BUT the it is spiritual about your soul spoilt in this world and how will you meet your creator etc.....daag is ablack mark, smear etc...

  • Agree ... loads people take it on a literal meaning. it is a sumwat a minor mirror 4 all of us.

  • Its just a decent way of conveying the message...

  • Nothing spiritual. Look:

Akhir daag bhee vunkaa, chunree bhee vunkaa , Ankh bhee aur sab kuch! mai kyO sharmindaa hOnaa mEraa baap (creator) kE saamnE?! :

It is what it is! Why the poet use word 'chunri' , it is of female.

  • see the dance by Padmini Superb, classical dance

  • Of course there is a double meaning to the Chunari Mein Daag.. It is a reference tio the virginity being lost and hence the line "jaake babul se najarein milaoon kaise"..

  • woh duniya more babul ka

    yeh duniya mera susraal

it means abt dis world n hereafter. its abt person feelin guilty (daag) and how will dey face lord (babul) ... its not abt loosing virginity :P

  • this song is taken for the film "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" (2007). It's beautifull song !

  • The film is ''Dil hi to hai''.

  • Very niCe sOng

  • CAN you get better than this ?

  • shabash! :)

  • I always wonder what "daag" is he reffering to?

  • @need4peace - Hi....the dictionary meaning of daag is a Stain Spot...however in this song it means alot......the poet is trying to exlpain his condition in this worldly life and how he will face God hereafter...this isthe real meaning of this song

  • Sure..I know it means stain. Thax for clearing my doubt. Honeslty I thought that there is some kinda double meaning in this...

  • Wah! Shahbhash!

  • Although I admire most of Manna Dey's songs, especially the classical music based ones, I must say with regret that this treatment of Bhairavi is less than perfect from bith the music director and the singer. Sorry if I have offended any fans.

  • srtambe: knowledge will limit you but imagination will take you around the world obviously this great song is fruit of combination of both.

in my humble opinion this tune and poetry have perfect balance of in terms of simplicity and complexity in every aspect

dance of "Padmini Priyadarshini" is real joy and teat as well

  • enlightning !!!!

  • Thanks a lot..........!!:-) friend....

  • Boht achee

  • Thank you ,great!

BTW,is the actor Shammi Kapoor, for some reason he looks like him.

Whole world will ever remember them!!

    Maestros...

  • great amazing awesome = rafi sab

  • it is Manna Dey ..not Rafi

  • Ya I figured out lately.. but thats also undisputed truth rite...

  • u mean abt Rafi ? oh absolutely....his is the God of hindi film music...soulful voice...

  • recently met this man who accompanies Manna dey sometimes during his concerts--plays the keyboard----he also says that his voice is still as strong.

  • what a great steps with rhytm xclentreally what a dance appreciateable

    bhatiab2

  • He is still as good as he was when singing this song. His voice is still strong and he does not miss a beat.

At 88 years not a quiver in his voice, not a tremor.

Also he is perfectionist wants everything to be perfect---and nitpicks. Comes early during his concert and checks out the sound system etc....that is why his concerts are still great. Not one mistake anywhere in his tunes. No cutting corners for him !!!!!!!

  • not true. i saw him in vancouver and his voice has obviously aged. it trembled and he could not sing the high notes. not to mention he was forgetting a lot of the words.

  • a very nice song!!! love it

  • I think Mannadey saab was last believed to be residing in Bangalor - BTM Layout. What a singer...a living legend...one of the greats...to be ever born..besides, kishore kumar, mukesh, hemant kumar, mohd rafi, latabai, ashaji
