Strange, this song reminds me of an old, sage and scholar like hermit (with the long beard to boot.) There's a sensation of weariness and tiredness to the piece, I don't really find it melancholic or sad.
I had always wished there would have been cool descriptions of all the levels like in the first game. Also, I really wish they would have followed through with Ecco 3 and explain WTF HAPPENED TO ECCO?!?!?!? It pains me knowing it is unfinished. =(
First time I played this, I was about 7. I turned it off when the dolphin here said that the Asterite died. I was like "Something died that wasn't an enemy? I don't like that!"
This level had some really dark water places! The music really freaked me out here more than any other level I think... I kept having to surface for air quickly, I associate this tune with suffocation now!
I thought it would've been cool if they could have subtly hinted in the game where each level was at geographically. Such as "Home Bay"... Pacific? Atlantic? Would have been cool. Still, it's alot of fun to imagine where it was too.
I always, always thought of this song as being relatively hauntingly scary, as well as quite claustrophobic, especially considering the stage in which it plays ("The Fault Zone").
Also, for some reason, how ever whether odd or not, it reminded me of the orient also, as in seas and oceanic regions of the orient such as The Yellow Sea, The Sea of Japan. For whatever reason, odd or not.
this part made me sad..didnt he like lose his powers then?...it wuz like they took off the training wheels too soon...love this game n thanx 4 uploading =)
This song doesn't seem mysterious to me... it's more of a sad tune... it's "Fault" zone after all...

Fantastic song ... Attila Haeger created a standard for genesis tunes. One of the best OST on genesis in my opinion. Thanks for the upload !

Ecco music and Skyroads music....for LIFE!! SON!!
P.S. Ecco's creator was a huge Pink Floyd fan and there are numerous Floyd references in these games. I'm sure you can Google this.
"Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine." - "Echoes" by Pink Floyd

It tanned my hide that he lost his all his cool powers at this level. But I don't think they really had the effect that they had in later games.

Is it just me or did the whole soundtrack just have a way of perfectly portraying the feeling of drifting in the ocean?

It most certainly did, at least that's the way that I percieved it.
