Who gives a damn if Foo Fighters aped the sound and style. The music will tell the truth and either stand the test of time, or it won't. This song is fucking awesome and will remain dear to me until the put me in a box. I can't say that of any Foo Fighter song.
Dave Grohl recently said that he has been ripping off Bob for the last 15 years and had him guest on a song from the current Foos record. Dave LOVES Bob Mould so I am okay with that.
Thanks a bunch for posting! This is such an amazing song and I never saw the video til now! Whoohoo! "File Under Easy Listening" is one of the best albums! Gotta love Sugar! Rock on, Bob!!! =)
Man, the dudes who go on about SRV and Clapton STRAT TOANZ should really take a breather and listen to the fire Bob can spit with his axes. Beautiful bite and snarl, instantly recognizable playing, what's not to like?
anyone else ever think that this song id about Bob's sexuality? I.e. he buys the wings, they don't fit right, and encounters difficult trying to return them. It's all there!
Sugar where even better than Husker Du imo, and I loved the Huskers. 'Copper Blu" has to be one of my top 10 CD's ever! And 'File" wasn't too far behind. Sugar are the best power trio since Jimi Hendrix Exprience I reckon.
@crownofthevalley Yep, it's a brilliant song, but I reckon 'Your Favorite Thing' is just a little better. Whatever, just about everything Bob does it great!
Do you think Bob feels completely cheated, since Dave Grohl pretty much modeled every aspect of his music after him and, as a result, has a license to print money because of it, while Bob still has to work for his dinner? I like Foo Fighters, but every time I listen to Husker or Bob solo, I get the sense that he's been cheated, big time.
Well the most obvious is floaty with She Floated Away, problem is that's a Grant Hart song, but Winnebago has the same riff as Chartered Trips and just the chord progressions in general have that drone string. Needle Hits E with Learn To Fly is another one.
Deffo. He's definitively one of the greatest lyricists of his generation, and besides his hero, Pete Townshend, there's no other guitarist quite like him. For a guy that has such a wide pop appeal he's never quite been able in the mainstream. And when sugar hit its stride he felt uncomfortable, in synthesis, we wouldn't love him as we do now if he ever got big, he's a cult hero and that's how he likes it. Better to have 3 loyal fans that 10000 that don't care. Besides, he's so good in a pub.
@Joe1039 yeah, Bob is the best. I know what you mean about how couldn't some of his songs, particularly solo and with sugar, not so much the huskers, make airplay. But, I reckon that's the way Bob likes it. He wouldn't sell out in a million years imo.
@jfo1014 Geez man, no offence, but Grohl sounds like shit compared to a genius like Bob. Grohl was just lucky he was in a band with Cobain. Sorry if that sounds harsh but each to their own. Cheers.
@jacotango -- Could just as easily be said Cobain was lucky he was in a band with Dave Grohl. At least one could handle the fame and sorry if that sounds harsh.
@jfo1014 and now they're working together. i respect the fact that grohl is really true and awesome to those who influenced him (mould, pat smear, lemmy, king diamond, etc.). dave grohl's a good egg in my book.
@jfo1014 I agree. Watach the new Foo Fighters documentary.....I loved Sugar when Copper Blue came out and I loved the Foo Fighters when the Colour and the Shape came out, I dont think Grohl ever tries to hide his influences.
@jfo1014 I'd honestly say Bob doesnt care. theres always gonna be someone jumping on a bandwagon etc. i hope bob is happy out there and cheers bob for all the amazing life affirming tunes!!
@jfo1014 well at least Bob got on the new Foo Fighters album but still bob was cheated he has alwase been a great artist that never got any credit for his work it's sad
@jfo1014 In hindsight, my comments were rude and uninformed. For one thing, I referred to Bob Mould as "Bob", as if I knew him by first name, which I don't. I never asked him for his opinion either, before posting my comments.
@jfo1014 Well, seeing as how a lot of early Sugar ripped off the Pixies ("A Good Idea" anyone?) I'm not too sad about this ;) Still, Mould is one of the best alt-guitarists of all time and I love his work.

Hey, this was a good CD when I was back at university.
But man, these guys were nerdy and uncool. Look at Bob Gould -- he really had to shop around to find two bandmates who were even more awkward than himself. LOL
No disrespect, I like the music...many good songs on F.U.E.L.
dont get me wrong, I am a man who works in the nursing profession, so I there are prejudices here..BUT he's the only gay man to EVER complain about the way that jeans-shops have a stupid and erroneous sizing of jeans
Mould's guitar tones, vocals, and general focus all seem to just be so much better here than the stuff I hear from him currently. I have major issues with his solo live performances... Without going into details, it's just reached a point that I will go see him because he is Bob, and not because I will leave the show trembling as I used to so for Husker, and Sugar, too. Just my 2 cents ..
I used to love this song!!! It was good album too. Always loved Bob Mould's electric guitar and vocal style. Great video. I have always loved those old educational films from the 50's. The images go good with his music. Great rockin' jam!
true musician, guitarest, artist neever really got into husker du even thought they had some real hot songs but in the summer of 93' or when ever the surgar album came out with "THATS I GO IDEA" fuck it was over with. bob or roberto iam from so. cal thank you for doing your thing!!!!!!!!!! hopefully you'll come to california sometime soon.
I remember seeing Bob do an acoustic show at First Avenue around '90 or so. He walked onstage, picked up his guitar, and said, "Sorry, kinda had a shitty day, and the next two hours are probably gonna reflect that."
And then he proceeded to rip himself apart on stage; intensity from start to finish. Just gave his all. "Hardly Getting Over It" was amazing.
bob acoustic was always an exercise in catharsis...saw him around the same era in d.c...ripped apart, indeed...that single show changed how i see music...
i first heard the likes of BOB MOULD when i bought Husker Du's Zen Arcade decades ago - and was subsequently blown away. the intensity on that album was absolutely jaw dropping. yeah, i agree with others here - Mould is the coolest guy ever. and as a guitar player..well, he's a MONSTER!!!
One of my very favorite songs ever. I must have listened to FUEL a thousand times in 1995 alone. It's absolutely criminal that this wasn't an absolute megahit, but Sugar didn't exactly have a lot of promotion behind them as this awful video demonstrates. I think I may have seen this one time on 120 Minutes at 1:00AM.

This is one of my favorite Sugar songs. After All The Roads Have Lead To Nowhere, Tilted, and Gee Angel. Roads to nowhere is still the best. Thanks for sharing.
What happened to the bass and drums on this video? It sounds like a stereo L-R recording. BTW, big Sugar fan here. Met Bob in Miami FL around '83.... great guy.
this whole genre kinda died out, though; indie now is shite. Its all a pas- tiche of stuff that came previously, and the clever vitality has been replaced by a sound experts pretensiousness, production wise. Ive given up up on it all though i'll be interested to see what jack white's next album is like.
the thing i reckon sugar had over the huskers, even though i luved husker, was the production and the drumming-it's so tight! bob's gay? never new until about 5 years ago and couldn't give a rat's arse. he's still the grandaddy of modern indie/alt imho. this and favorite thing were my favorites from sugars second. and yep i remember the gibson flying V well. normally i don't like 'em but in bob's hands they are something else!!!
if anyone has a vid. of 'standing on the edge of the hoover dam' i'd really luv to see that!-anything from Copper Blue really. what a classic record. anyone know if his cover of gram parson's 'hickory wind' appears on one of Bob's solo records and if so which one? thanx.
A truly great influence on my musical tastes and song writings. The only thing depressing me is that it's already been 20 years since Husker Du (and 10yrs since this nice little diddy). Great nostalgia, but timeless in it's quality and innovation.
Since the 80's, I would listen to Husker Du and I realized that I was mostly into them because of Bob. I prefered him singing than Grant. Grant was a great singer but I thought Bob's voice was better and more unique. That's what I especially loved about Sugar. He did all the singing.

the amazing and tuneful 'FLIP YOUR WIG' I never looked back! What an amazing songwriter/Guitarist/Producer/DJ...You name it whatever the guy touches is GOLD!
Check out his new project 'BLOWOFF' with Richard Morel.
Agreed. When I lsietend "Gee Angel" for the fisrt time, I had no idea, either. But it didn't matter and it's changed nothimg. Bob is a great musician.
If you guys ever saw the 'DU live! He played the Gibson Flying V slung so low it almost touched the ground! GOD he doesn't play like a stereo typical gay man might. He attacks his guitar and when I saw them played so LOUD at the finale, that I saw GOD!!
He finally set his Flying V against his RIG and just let it wail away Then they left the stage and the feedback droned on for over 5 minutes before they came back on, and he went right into "She Floated Away"
gotta agree 100% with that! whenever that 'what's the best 10 records ever made' question comes up, 'Copper Blue' is always at the top of the heap for me. some husker's stuff was great as is some of Bob's solo stuff but he totally excells with Sugar.
I hear a lot of Sugar and Bob riffs in a lot of tunes, but cheated? Ask Bob - he's a god to Husker devotees & is always growing. RESPECT FOR THE MAN.

Same here, but I wish Mould never broke Sugar up. His post-sugar solo work has been inconsistant with a few great songs on every album since.

I never think of Bob Mould as gay. It's more like, 'oh and by the way, he's gay too.'. The man is brilliant. I love his work.

Most of the stuff he did was good, but Sugar were the best thing Bob Mould was involved in. Love 'em! :D

gotta agree 100% with that! whenever that 'what's the best 10 records ever made' question comes up, 'Copper Blue' is always at the top of the heap for me. some husker's stuff was great as is some of Bob's solo stuff but he totally excells with Sugar.
