I think they should of stayed together atleast just taking time and making some studio albums, and if things turned around they could of did a tour or something..
@IViewMusic This is from 1976, its from New Yorks "Palladium" it was one of the final shows pre last waltz..it was recorded for a radio broadcast..look it up.
Sigh...if ONLY they'd stayed together. Richard could've dried up (Robbie was right that the road took a toll - on him especially - no excuse for RR to break up the Band). Anyway he could've dried up, they could've only toured occasionally w/ time for solo projects and occasional Band albums.
Instead, Richard fell back into drinking and hung himself. Rick ballooned in the 90s and bit it. Levon nearly died of cancer, Garth...well, stayed Garth, and Robbie...never fixed his mistake.
@mcdstuff I know he was in Waltz. I didn't make myself clear. Robbie/Scorsese did not include footage of him performing many of his songs; not even the final "I Shall Be Released". The film concentrated on Robbie; his guitar (and switched-off mike ;-) None of the other members of The Band were given the credit they should have gotten. At the premier Ronnie Hawkins was heard to say "Was Richard still in the group when this was done?" for all to hear. Read Levon's book "This Wheels On Fire".
@ItsBouchBitch this has been my favorite song for 35 yrs. I knew nothing of the story before I heard this and I tear up every time I hear it. History repeats itself with other people in other places which makes the song even stronger...

recommend rick and richard duo live at o'tooles and another maybe dylans cafe fairly new releases recorded in 85 they were sounding good but then tragedy levon still plays beautifully wiith his daughter and friends tragic story maybe i'm wrong but it seems as if jrrr turned his back on his bandmates for money and hollywood and kept their share of the money for himself a storey from shakespeare from a couple of band songs tragedy ensued still the greatest band ever ALL TIME
It's funny how the acadian story is used by english and quebec artists...and they are so at ease about the idea of a folklorised Acadia, that Acadians are a thing of the past... in the mean time, we are still there, still strugling for survival of the Acadian Nation, while people outside digest our story like some kind of light dish.
It's too bad there aren't more live versions of this song. I love the songs where Richard, Levon and Rick all get a part. Garth's dumb 70's synth/organ really asses this version up. It's sick otherwise.
If only these guys could have stayed together I was fortunate to catch them in Austin at a outdoor festival. They were wonderful. Its hard to believe about Robbie and all the bad blood between rhem. I dont know....I still celebrate trheir music.
Richard sobered up for a while and I think when he was touring in '83 was at least part of that time. He did sound good. He was so sad in '76 during Last Waltz and even sadder was that Robbie and Scorsese refused to let him be a part of the movie. He was a pure soul with tortured demons...a truly beautiful person. He fell off the wagon sometime thereabouts or right after that '83 tour and was never able to get it together again. Bless you dear Richard.
@gesand1 I'm not sure there is one....I worked with this guy who played lead guitar in a band...dad was a musician as well....anyway....I told him one day I had seen about a hundred Grateful Dead shows....he scoffed and said the Grateful Dead couldn't sniff the shorts of the Band. Or something along that line. And his dad played/opened for Jerry Garcia. He was arrogant and opinionated with his Les Paul.
There may be a video of it, as it was performed at The Last Waltz with Neil Young and Joni Mitchell on harmony, but the footage would either lost, not filmed or still in the archives at Martin Scorsese's house.

This is not what the title says it is. Technical mishap? Or has the uploader typed in '1976' by mistake twice?

Nice live version, 70s synth and all, of one of the Band's greatest. Tragic, sad, hopeful and loving.

what a loss of rick danko and richard manuel. this song was one of the last true signs of unity and family the band put on record.
