1.) People look out for their own self interest. This is not going to change.
2.) If we can find a way for self interest to benefit more people, such as the creation of wealth to also create jobs and therefore more wealth, then charity becomes more effective.
Get to give. Create to give. Give opportunities. Etc.
People also give out cash because they think they are helping and they sincerely care and want to help.
But in my opinion, the only way to really improve the impoverished is to build a foundation for a continuous stream of wealth. When I say wealth, I mean at least the necessities - food, running water, shelter, health care. Not mansions or malls, but wealth to sustain life at an acceptable quality.
Altruism is a disgusting practice. I only give when I know I will get something in exchange that I determine as equal. Don't lie to yourself and pretend that there is any true self-sacrifice.
I used to volunteer for a charity. It was sad to see how little they really cared about what they were doing. And where did most of the money go? To their salaries! grrrrrr
Canada is a little more caring society. But I agree with what you said. Nobody really cares about anybody but themselves.
You right Mac as bitter as it may sound to most. People genuinely are not willing to do what is necessary to help their fellow man when in need. It's hard for most people to admit that in many cases most people will not help someone especially not related to them. At the end of the day most people value their net worth more than then they the necessary everyday needs that we all need to have things like shelter, food, healthcare, companionship, a kind word. Many of us have lost our humanity.
Mac I take issue w/ur generalization that ALL people fit into the 3 categories that you've mentioned. Rather than argue that point, I'd prefer to address the true issue. Defining HELP. Alot of the reasons help is inadequate or causes more harm is people just don't know how to help. Whatever it takes to make the problem leave ur conscience mind is not help. Help has to be quantifiable, it must contribute to building or restoring. Maybe we shud ask that ? next time we HELP. DOES IT HELP?
As I left the gym today, I passed by the high school boy who had been hired to clean the weight machines. It looked like a really boring job and he didn't seem to happy about what he was doing. So I stopped for a minute and told him that I appreciate his good work. He smiled and thanked me. Something as simple as this... a smile and a kind word... go a long way in making our lives seem worth something.
Two of this videos tags are "unconditional" and "love".
If you think about it, though, "unconditional love" doesn't really exist?
I mean, if it did, then one wouldn't be mad if his spouse cheated on him because he wants his spouse to be happy regardless of his own feelings.
I think we will love those who we have come to depend on (financially, physically, emotionally, etc.), as they tend to make our lives a bit easier to cope with. Ergo, "love" is kind of a selfish thing, unintentionally.
It is rare but there are people who love someone so much where they would not get angry if there spouse cheated on them. These people would let there spouse have whoever they wanted at the cost of their own heartache.
So how is the Lucid Dreaming going if you're still doing it? A lot's been going on for me with that subject,my recall is excellent, and I'm becoming lucid more often. Also I feel that most people are genuinely rotten and corrupt, that's a reason why no one want's to help out their fellow man.Common good dead's are long gone at this point in time..it's really sad, that there is no one to "Save" anyone.
It's not too circular to me,mainly because I expect that from most people that live in today's society. We need more people that would give more of what people actually would need....
Also are you keeping a journal by chance? A log on your dreams?
You are right about helping those that working to help themselves. This is best done, if possible, so that those being helped will attribute their good fortune to their own efforts.
On the other hand, indiscriminate "charity" often does more harm than good.
Exactly what runs through my mind when I see people wearing pink ribbons and not knowing what it is for, or that half of the money they spent is going into one single person's wallet. To me, that isn't helping. That is compensation. You will often see companies donate money to save face for themselves. It is pathetic.
I have another thing to add.
1.) People look out for their own self interest. This is not going to change.
2.) If we can find a way for self interest to benefit more people, such as the creation of wealth to also create jobs and therefore more wealth, then charity becomes more effective.

Charitable gifts only last as long as people are happy. In other words, for as long as bread doesn't go stale.

You just pretty much riffed off a really famous Gandhi quote, and even paraphrased it in this vlog. "Be the change you want to see in this world."

Isn't that reasoning a bit circular? :)
Oh, lucid dreaming is always going well. If I do ever stop, it would appear on thecast since I've been doing it for my entire life.

You forgot the 4th reason - the tax deduction. For many companies and some individuals, it's a big reason.
