LangLang has absolute mastery virtuoso technique on the piano but somehow I find the emotion expressed in this performance overly shadow the internal beauty of lyricies the various passages trying to convey.
sorry to say this: this peace has very less to do with chinese music or culture: western instruments, western scale, western musical gesture (like this trashy arpeggios in the piano and many others). i'm really sad that the great traditions of chinese music (like the operas: peking opera, wuhan opera) dies because of this creepy assimilation and party politics. and i'm not chinese, but interested in really cultural heterogenity
@IIZarathustraII if you are interested in cultural heterogenity, then DON'T POST HERE!!! GO POST SOMEWHERE ELSE WITH ALL THE @#%^$& POLITICIANS!!! ( i don't want to cuss, because i am a very nice person) WE ARE TRYING TO HEAR MUSIC HERE!!! AND ALL I CAN HEAR IS PEOPLE ARGUING ABOUT POLITICS AND WHATNOT!!! GO AND GET YOURSELF A LIFE SISSIES!!!
@xFirebird925x be cool, why don't you ignore the comments and foucus on hearing if you are really trying to hear music. iizarathustrall is right to some extent, Yellow River as a concerto derives more from russian classical music than chinese traditional music, and it's 3rd movement is a modificated version of a song composed by 洗星海. If some of you here want to touch chinese culture, LiangZhu violin concerto(梁祝小提琴协奏曲search this)would be a better choice.
Somehow don't like his interpretation. This piece of music was born during WW2 at the critical moment of the war time. Half of China was occupied by Japanese troops and for the outcry of danger of wiping out of the whole Chinese nationality, it calls on the entire Chinese people to defend the homeland for imminent danger, a very patriotic and critical piece of work, weighing more than the national anthem.
I cried when I was listening and thinking of Yellow River Concerto and the historical background when it was composed. Another piece made me cry is Wagner's last opera "Parcifal". Yellow River Concerto may be not on the same level with Parcifal, but emotionally it is as strong as if not stronger to me than Wagners.

Awesome performance by Lang Lang. Is that the China Philharmonic in the background? Ironically on record, I prefer the version by the Singapore pianist Seow Yin Kit released on HK label in the early 80s. It was accompanied by the Gumma Symphony Orchestra of Japan. Its hard to the find the CD version now.
This concerto has such vigor as it bursts out into a beautiful song in the 2nd mvmnt that makes you want to sing along with it, and Lang Lang puts that strength into it as though he wants to sing with it. It needs to be played in the USA for the enjoyment here. Lang Lang looks like he too is raptured by the melodies

Lang Lang is my favorite pianist, and being a pianist myself, I have learnt a lot from his and he has inspired me =)

A towering musical achievement in terms of both performance and composition!
The passionate lyricism of this concerto moves the soul like no other work. If you aren't moved by this piece, you probably don't have a soul.

Amazing isn't it? It defenitely sounds Asian if a concerto doesn't have too many pure Asian elements! Lang Lang's body-shaking doesn't help at all.
