It's too late now, and you probably wouldn't have done it anyway, but if you press left and right at the same time while in the cloud, you'll travel extremely fast (to the right). It the second fastest mode of transportation in the game (I think), right behind being shot out of a pipe.

A couple things to point out.

1: check the volume on ZSNES itself, that might be the problem.

2: secret exits can either be a key, or a secret goal, which looks exactly like a normal goal.
