As a personal friend of Shawn and as someone who knows his history as well as anyone, I can tell you for a fact that it was Ravi Shankar who taught George Harrison how to play the Sitar, and while Shawn did play the Sitar with George Harrison, perhaps even before Harrison met with Shankar, it was not Shawn who taught Harrison "How" to play any stringed instrument. However, Shawn did sing backup on "Lovely Rita".
Here is a rare video of one of those Sitar lessons. Best Wishes.
Shawn Phillips is truly amazing in his powerful deliverance of his music. His lyrical prowess is unbending and I had the opertunity to see him in concert on May 4th here in mpls, mn at the Guthrie theater, wow, he still has it after all these years. Get to see him again in July in St Cloud on the 30th. His DVD from the 2008 reunion concert held at the MN Zoo titled "Living Collaboration" is out, its a DVD of wonderment and awesomeness, go purchase it, you'll be very pleased indeed.........
I saw Shawn Phillips in Phoenix in the early seventies. I wasn't familiar with him. I have never forgotten his stunning performance and voice it's hauntingly magnificent! He looks different in this clip and I wasn't sure it was him until i heard that amazing voice. I did go to his site and the music samples on it are fantastic. Thank you for posting.
I would like to see a video of (woman) not the real title- it's too long and I can't remember- it starts `the glow round your face, when you see the darkness race
Hey everyone, This is NOT the song you are thinking about. The song you to which you are referring is "She Was Waitin' For Her Mother At The Station In Torino And You Know I Love You Baby But It's getting too heavy to laugh." For short, I call it "Woman" too. It was on 2nd Contribution and this song was not on that album. I wish someone would post "Woman" because it is truly the best!!!!!!!
I have both Moonshine and Ballad of Casey Deis be watching for them in 2007 thanks for your comments and spread the word and check out my other video's on joelsamuelpresents aka bscactus.
There are three if you look for them. It always surprises me that people don't look at the buttons and the links I spend all the time arranging a program of like material and in some cases many differnet songs or parts to an artist.
Most people seem to drift in for some reason then they are gone and some find original art in any form so delighful. Everyone has their audience I value anyone who comes and enjoys the artists and my productions.
SHAWN PHILLIPS has been in so many musical directions, he
also worked with DONOVAN, i always liked his very personal folk style music, he's never been known enough, when you see his discography !!! THANK YOU for that great one !
