So instead of going to a safe, secure, long-term waste storage facility, the waste nuclear fuel rods just sit around in collecting pools? Not a good energy policy or national security policy. Dirty bombs, anyone? I support Obama, but I think that this ad was over the top. Nuclear waste has to go somewhere. This ad promotes a "not in my backyard" ideology for people in Nevada, so it's what he's criticizing McCain for (except that McCain flip-flopped).
McCain...bad for Nevada...bad for America. If he straight talks, he negates it all with changing his position later. I thought Republicans were against flip-floppers?
mccain is gonna die of old age before he finishes his term. Did you also know that mccain is computer illiterate. Its 2008 and this guy cant use a computer and wants to be our next president! anyone that votes for mccain is an idiot.
Senator Obama, I am only 17, and can not vote for you yet. But what I really think you really need to do is capitalize McCain on the issues you spoke of in the Audacity of Hope. Your book made me realize a lot about America, the world, and myself. If you can translate your words from your book, to your campaign, I know that you'll win.
This ad is fair game. McCain wants to build 45 nuclear plants by 2030. Well, the waste is going to travel through SOMEBODY'S backyards. The people need to know that McCain is opposed to having waste travel through his backyard but most, assuredly, is dedicated to having nuclear waste travel thru someone else's backyard. Great ad!
of course he would not allow it to cross his state...this is exactly what is meant by pol.itics as usual. Obama would not want it in his backyard so he will protect my backyard as well.
Well, cindyfromfalls, when you play hard ball you MUST xpect to be hit back HARD! McCain thinks he can LIE & DISTORT the facts and play the same Republican political games and not be hit back...Well, not this time. Excellent ad!!
It's a shame... All Barack has to do is be an adult keep pushing his message and not act like a spoiled child like most Republican politicians. I'm more an Obama supporter but seeing his campaign sink low like McCain's does all the time is not encouraging.
I'm not fron Nevada, but from what I've read about Yucca Mountain, I have major concerns of using it for nuclear waste. Many scientists believe it is stable, many do not. I don't think nuclear waste is something one takes chances with.
Depositing nuclear waste in a site that might or might not be stable sets a bad precedent for the country and endangers those in Nevada, for this generation and the generations beyond.
Wow. What a horribly ill-informed scaremongering advertisement! I'd take issue with McCain on Spent fuel being dangerous to transport through AZ though, because the truth is that there is a spotless record of moving this high density, chemically inert ceramic material of relatively low radiotoxicity. Yucca Mountain is one of the most studied geological sites on earth.
If you actually watch the ad close, there is never any mention of Yucca M. being dangerous or is there mention of transporting waste being dangerous. So there is really no misinformation here. What the ad does get at is the hypocrisy of opposing waste in AZ but being OK with it in NV. I.e., the hypocrisy of NIMBY.
Accidents do happen, but aside from that. The truth is, I lived and my parents live in staten island, in SI there is a huge garbage yard, who knows what is there, thought they closed it. But even then, because of that, the prices of homes in SI are low compared to the rest of the boroughts...second when my parents bought a house in SI, they looked for the farthest point from the garbage yard...its a turn of people, even if its 100% safe, the term nuclear, garbage, whatever
It still begs the question "Who wants them to be transporting it through their state?" That has always been the problem with trying to have nuclear powered cities, no one wants it in their backyard, would you be comfortable with living next to one and I wonder how fast your property value would drop if there was one near you. If John McCain supports it then he should allow them to build one in the city he lives in. If you are for nuclear power, then let them build one near you.
There's nothing that can be done. The Yucca plan is the most sensible one, and currently the waste is just being stored in ponds next to the plants. Not the ideal situation.
JohnDeBunkTest, Obama is not totally opposed to nuclear but he ISN'T a proponent of building 45 nuclear plants by 2030 as is McCain. So, the ad speaks for itself. McCain is ONLY concerned about HIS backyard. He doesn't appear to be a proponent of ensuring the safety of ALL of American citizens...only those who live in Arizona, his home state.
This was a great ad. I noticed everyone is saying Obama is "on the fence about energy" or "Obama is a Flip Flopper" yet McCain's politics have changed drastically since 2000 and even more in the last 6 mos.
it is well written and highly effective. would work great in nevada but also all across the country for different reason. it touches the theme of mccain as a typical politician who will take impractical positions just to get him through an election. but them obama needs to add that if nuclear energy is going to be part of the solution, there needs to be massive investment in storage facilities. so, it's not that he's opposed to it, the technology just doesn't exist yet.
I hope Obama is the next president but I just think that it's a massive shame that in their advertisments politicians from both sides of the pond have to resort to slinging mud at their opponents.
Dont forget that McCain wants to open 45 new nuclear plants that and drilling are his only plan for fixing our energy problem. Drilling wouldnt do anything for 10 yrs I guess you should tell John McCain that. On November 4th Mr Barack Obama will be elected our new president.
I don't know about great ad. It feels kind of like a political sound bite ad. Talking points maybe. We have to do something with nuclear waste and all types of hazardous chemicals.
Maybe it's because I'm from Europe and even though I highly favor Obama over McCain, I don't think this is the right way to make a political ad. It's very suggestive and full of sophisms.
Besides the fact that the clip of McCain saying he supported it was way too short that it sounds like it was put way out of context, it was a good ad.
This man knows what he is doing. This campaign has been mapped out in stages thus far first biography, then show he can be presidential, followed by general policies platforms then individual state initiatives, all the while working ground troops all across the country. This is a highly disciplined and regimented campaign right here. All this and its only August. The media keeps focusing on daily polling and missing the overall strategy.
Not that good of an ad. I think that message-wise it would be an effective ad, but the delivery feels rushed. The voice-over lady needs to take some more time to breathe.
Let's improve wind, solar & fuel cell technologies so we can get off foreign & maybe even domestic oil dependence, close down the nuclear plants, & drive energy cost to 0$.
Let the McBush-Exxon ticket speak for its self!!! McBush does speak for the campaign. Its not negative to defend your self. Be complete, through, intelligent and STRONG!!! He is seeking the votes of the poorly informed distant watchers. You must respond swiftly to keep his LIES from sinking in and sticking.

So...
Where does BHO want to put Nuclear waste? Yucca is a safe site, and, if I were McCain, I would rather not send trains through Phoenix.
That said, I live within a mile of a major train line, so Nuclear waste will be going through my "back yard" and I'm not worried.
If you're concerned, just do some research on the actual train cars that will be moving the waste.
