Well at least he's open minded and isn't completley confused my mustangs first ride wasn't a good one I've decided some more ground work and we'll be trying again soon.
These mustangs come from the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown, CA. They sell off some weanlings yearly to pay for hay for the winter to offset their feed at the Sanctuary for the wild mustangs. A very good program....a win, win, win! Google them and learn more!
Good question! Some breeds they start as two year olds. It is not a good idea to ride young horses for very long or far because their knees have not closed yet. I got this mustang as a weanling and had done all the ground work for over a year. He was mentally ready. All we did was just get him started in the round pen for about a 20 minute ride, at the walk only. The vet said it was OK, as long as we did not trot too long or did not lope. Then we let him set over the winter to mature physically
Is it normal to ride so young horse? Im not sure how fast mustangs are growing but 2 year old is like a baby. Im just asking couse in Poland we used to ride a horse when hes at least 3 or 4 years old, not talkng about racing horses. Sry for my english :P
@Asharante here in midwest america a lot of colts get started at age 2 and in fact i prefer it that way....my first horse was broke & gettin put to work by age 3 or 3 & a half....just kinda depends on how much the horse has grown & matured
I got my friend getting on her filly and her filly is barely over a yr! But the fillly is almost 14 hands and were just getting her used to weight on her back. I broke my old horse at 2 and barely trotted til she was 3! Now shes 11 and perfectly healthy
Congrats! Good for you. Take it slow and easy and gain their trust and never violate it. Mustangs, especially, have a strong sense of "fairness", and they never forget anything. Be a kind and gentle, but a strong herd leader to them, and you will do fine!
hes absolutely adorable! I'm adopting a mustang from a sancuary is south Dakota in a few months, I can only hope it goes even close to as well as this!
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, we feel like we are their "Moms", and they know it. They trust and respect us; and we help them to be the best they can be.
A long time ago I rode my appy when he was two, but then again, I was only 12 at the time. lol. My mustang mare was close to 4 yrs old when captured, and shes actually grown some since Ive had her. Surprised me & my farrier.
The best age for starting a horse varies from breed to breed. It just depends when their bones and joints are mature enough to handle the extra strain of work. I began riding my mustang at age 2 and he handled it just fine. When in doubt ask your vet!
hey if you teach him to lunge be4 u ride then u can ride him but have him lunged at the same time and dont listen to other ppl if ur vet says its okay then it is mustangs are strong and hardy horses but most ppl dont do reserch about horses like i do lol
hey i would hate to break it to ya but by having someone lead the horse around for a while is a hell of a lot smarter thaan having him jump around the ring and go crazy! they are just getting the horse used to having someone on its back! you have your methods and everyone else has theres!!!
I believe he came from the same sanctuary my mustang did. All I could have suggested was wear a helmet! And or maybe actually have the person holding the lead rope stand closer to the horse as they led them. Unless you were worried he would explode?
I recently was injured pretty bad when my horse spooked or something...unfortunately have to sell her.
Thanks for your comments. My vet says that what we do is just fine. We go on short walk only trail rides when they are 2.5 to 3 years old. He said it actually helps build stronger bones, as long as we don't trot a lot and especially lope.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
he is TOO young he is going to have bad joints when he is about 5 trust me it happen to a horse at my barn his lope was as slow as a walk and the vet came over and said he has to be pastured for the rest of his life
This is all we do with them at this age, then they get turned back out. We don't actually start riding them till they are three. We find that if we can get them this tame and used to people and equipement now, it is much easier on horse and rider, than if we wait till they are three!
At my barn we start riding them when they are about two and a half and they don't have bad joints and there are horses there that started out that way and are in their twenties. They're fine and everything.
hey dont worry go ahead and train him the way you want, feel free to do as you like age wont affect him at all! if you want to gallop him go ahead its not going to harm him. horses are as strong as can be and if he wasnt able to take it the horse would let you know! so dont worry he'll be fine he looks young and healthy and not scrawny so he will be fine! good luck!
sk8erdevil5 - That is all too true for racehorses galloping around 40 mph at two years old. I'm no vet, but I'm positive that the horse will be fine if all they do is walk him around in a circle...But no jumps!
no its not true! i know, i know millions of people say that but i am extremely honest with this i know! my family is in the racehorse buisness! my uncle owns the Dustin jones stable and owns many good racehorses and they all beging their training at about two maybe a little more, and about at the age of two and a half or more they begin there racing career most sorness is causes from the hard ground during the winter and the tough corners on some of the race tracts like the one in threerivers
@AKAcath What the people in this video are doing is good for the horse, starting it at a young age, getting it used to people being on it's back. But a horse's bones aren't fully developed at the age of two, so therefore racing them when they are that young is just plain stupid and careless. If you actually knew what you were talking about when it comes to horses, as you say you do on your channel, you would know this. My advice, pick up The Encyclopedia of Horses and start reading ;)
@BarebackRider13 be quiet you probably have no idea what Your talking about! i know very well what i m talking about you insult me with your coment pick up and encyclopedia! excuse me but thats they way things have been done for over 150 years it doesnt do anything to them to be broken in and rode early like that
@BarebackRider13 we break all of our horses in at 2 and if you dont like, i dont give a shit! thats the way its been done for about 150 years it doesnt do anything to them! and an encyclopedia, isnt actual life its a book there are a million different ones and a million different opinions they are all based on what someone thinks!
but mustangs are a stronger breed of horse for some1 that weighs more than a hundred lbs shouldnt ride him intell age 3 for speed but if you just ride him around a pen at a walk and trot he will be fine i gentled my horse at 18 months and she is fine at the age of 3 so maybe you should no what your talking about
not to burst your bubble but we break in horses at the age of two and age has nothing to do with bad joints later on! lamness is caused by many things!
I would have preferred to see him trotting circles being guided by the rider instead of led but if this method work for you then that is great. He is very pretty.
Um he'd probably do better if the chick with the lead rope was next to his head instead of standing in front of him blocking his way...but thats just my opinion
Lol she could almost pass as a Doc Bar. She sure dowse have a Doc Bar hind end. :P
