another way to get the hard layer off is to rinse it, soak it in water overnight, remove the hard layer and dry it. Then you can just leave it in the turtle tank and clean the bone once a week.
Do you allow your box turtles to hibernate? My box turtle won't eat for about 3 days now and she is too weak to hibernate and I'm positive that she may die if she did so. Please tell me what to do, she won't eat and she TRYING to hibernate...... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! I just adopted her 3 months ago and she had HORRIBLE owners that treated her poorly (she was housed in a 10 gallon tank and couldn't move around because it was so small). PLLEEEAAASSSEEE HELLLLPPP!!!im desperate
Slowing down and eating less means she is preparing to hibernate, but I wouldn't chance it, you should keep her inside this year.
When you adopt a new turtle and place it into a new environment, it can be hard to adjust to it in such a short amount of time like 3 months. If you had gotten her around the start of spring she would have been more prepared for the climate change and knowing where/how to hibernate.
Buy a storage bin, some substrate, a heat lamp, and keep her inside till spring.
