@Last0Enemy15 :O there is this thing called a roman scorpion which is 4 times bigger than a crossbow. did you think that maybe this was just a scalled down version :O
While I haven't scaled the design up (successfully) yet, IMHO there is nothing better than nylon monofilament fishing line when it comes to the skein(s). I'm using pretty lightweight line in the miniatures, but it can be obtained in much higher breaking strengths depending on your engine, and in multi-mile lengths if you need 100,000lb+ breaking strengths in the skein.
I need to construct one as a project and I was wondering if you could perhaps make a tutorial on hot to build it or at least give me the dimensions of the materials used and the processes involved.
I am using 1/2" square basswood for the ballista, which you can find at a craft stores or hobby shops. Look for wood for doll houses. In terms of dimensions, the inside of the frame is 3", which is a tad small as it makes winding the skein a pain, by about 8" wide. Take a look at my Flickr page (same user name) as I've got a lot of pics up of the ballista and catapults in various stages of construction. Good luck and happy sieging :)
It's not quite a tutorial, but I've got a lot of construction pictures of the ballista on my flickr page, including how to shape the arms and make the bow string. I've found on the ballista and onager that having the throwing arm be one and a half times the interior height of the frame (i.e. if the frame is three inches, the arms should be four and a half). hope that helps.
i need one of those to bother people unexpectedly
