To anyone reading this who thinks they might have a budding alcohol addiction, GET HELP IMMEDIATELY!!! this is one demon you do NOT want in your life.
I once read that this was the second version. They nailed it the first time, but somehow the film was ruined. Can you imagine trying to do this twice? Allegedly, the lost one was better.
Peck, Stewart, Fonda, Lemmon, Newman, Robertson, Scott, Cobb, Welles, Guinniss .. all great and all gone... God knows who we have to take their place .... Even DiNiro, Pacino. Duvall, are getting up there ..... any deadbeat Hollywood guy who calls himself an actor, should take a long look at this scene and quickly realize they probably need to change professions.
Unfortunately, this is really hard for me to watch as I've been growing up with my mother in the last few years because of her alcoholism. I'm moved out out, thankfully, but still, this is bringing back nightmares.
I lost a beloved uncle needlessly and almost lost a brother, and the power of alcohol over someone's life was really played out in this scene, showed how desperate Joe was to get a drink.
Jack Lemmon's Performace In The Mental Hospital & The Garden House Was Brilliant! When I First Saw That Scene Of Him In The Garden House I Was In Shock How Well Done He Did The Scene It Was Absolutely Brilliant! I Crying In The Almost End Part Of The Movie Where He Was In The Mental Hospital When The AA guy Was Talking To Him And He Was Hooked on to the Bed & He Was Asking Him Questions And He Said '' I Love Her'' That Broke My Heart That Was Beautiful! :)
The idea for this scene probably originated with Billy Wilder's superb *Lost Weekend* where a desperate Ray Milland discovers the bottle he'd stashed in a ceiling lamp. Lemmon's character really had some splainin' to do when new father-in-law Charles Bickford went out to his greenhouse in the morning. Oops.
If you are a drunk such as I was many years ago, you cannot sit thru this entire clip. It really hits close to home.

Easily Jack Lemmon's best role...he was nominated for the best actor oscar that year...and should have won it, over Gregory Peck

Talk about chewing the scenery! Jack needs some rye bread, and swiss cheese to go with this HAM!

Easily one of the most powerful scenes in history. I'm surprised this doesn't have a lot of views.
