Hi Chef. I tried grilling fish for the first time tonight using this video as a guide. I wanted to thank you for proving the world with such an easy/simple marinade. It turned out great!!! Thanks!
For a starch side, rice always pairs well with fish. A nice risotto would take it to the next level. To keep it simple and good without rice, I would serve my roasted potatoes as the side...
I made the mistake of pouring the marinade over the salmon every time I opened the grill, and right when I put it on. It turned out way too salty... But it was STILL godlike salmon. Perhaps brushing some more maple syrup on instead would have been a better choice...
I also added a dash of ginger just to give it a more complex flavor, seemed to help things a bit.
I really like the looks of it and everything, but one thing I always wonder when wathcing american cooks doing food on television etc. Why do you always sweeten things so badly? If not malesyrup, it's brown sugar, if not brown sugar, it's regular castersugar, if not regular sugar, it's honey.. Whyy? =(
I can't get around not thinking that's just gonna taste like candy. Work as a chef myself, and tried many american recies without all the syrup and stuff, and so far it's worked out great. :)
@laltzable This particular recipe replicates the "Cedar Smoked Salmon" or Pacific Northwest style, which has these flavors. It's just one recipe. I have plenty of other recipes that are not sweet.
Easy way on the grill is skin side down on a boat of tinfiol, do not cover. Dont flip, just watch the colour and texture. the skin adds to the flavour.
my salmon always sticks to my grill, creates a mess and half of the salmon ends up on the grill because it breaks up. I tried olive putting olive oil on the grill before placing the salmon ... that helped a bit but still it wasn't as good as your video. How do you make sure the fish does not stick to the grill?
@pcjudosambo You can wipe the grill with a cooking-oil dampened cloth (using tongs) and then just wait til the fish "sets" before flipping. You will probably always have a small bit of sticking.
Looks like a good & easy recipe... But I would recpommend using the aerosol cooking spray before you heat the grill. That seems like it could potentially be dangerous around flames.
I will check that out...sounds much different than what I use, and it sounds good. Do you ever use an Alder, Cedar or Maple plank to grill fish or any other meat?
Next to Grilled Sea Bass...This is my wife's #2 favorite dish. What seasoning rub do you use on Sea Bass? Check out our Channel...let me know what you think? Peace
@TheKeithGuidry I use my lemon herb marinade on most grilled fish. I have a video about it. There's another great recipe I still need to post that has a macadamia crust. :)
It looks so tasty! I'd like to try this but I don't know if my family really likes it because of the soy sauce... they have the prejudice that it's got a "too oriental" taste, lol :)
@MsIrisSantos This tastes like the Pacific Northwest-style maple glazed salmon you get in the restaurants. If you like that, you will like this recipe. Hope this helps.
@ChefTips My 10 yrs old son doesn't care for Chinese food nor seafood so, I made this with Bragg Liquid Aminos instead of soy sauce. You can find this at a health food store or sometimes at other stores. He loved it so much he asked for seconds that night and he wanted it for school lunch the next day! Mahalo for this great dish! ; )
You're a genius! I watched all your 103 videos in 1 day! The bad part of it is that when i subscribed i began watching one by one, and my mum was cooking at the same time, I was dead hungry :D
@ChefTips is the wild caught more fatty than the farm raised ? and is also the sockeye better tasting than the other salmon types ? let me know . thanks :-)
@972trev The trick is have an oiled grill and not to turn the fish too much. When you first put it down, let it sit for a while so it doesn't stick to the grill.
Today I grilled fresh salmon I bought at Costco. I see that you have smaqll pieces you flip so I cut this large piece up in 4 parts and it worked VERY well. What I did wrong was put the top down and one side burned a bit but I cut that away and the rest was unbelievably delish! I guess I should leave the top open so that I can watch it closer. I didn't use anything on it and it was truly tasty as is. Thank you!!!

hahaha @ :43 it really does sound like you are singing along with that banjo in the background. I don't know if this was coincidence or not. Either way, hilarious!
Hello. A citrus cream sauce using orange juice is excellent over salmon. A marinade using OJ, olive oil, garlic and some parsley would also be great for salmon. When marinating seafood with any acid base, marinade for no more than 30 minutes.
@TheVittleVlog Hahaa! It's 1-800-555-CHEF Try this marinade for 2 to 4 salmon steaks. 1/2 cup of OJ 1/2 to 3/4 cup olive oil 1 clove of minced garlic 1 tsp brown sugar 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley. Mix well and poor over the salmon and marinade for 30 minutes. Lightly salt and pepper your salmon before placing on the grill. Cheers!
Hey Jason, I tried this recipe.. and this is really great... i squeeze in a little bit of lemon and its just perfect. Thanks so much for the recipe :)
I made the grilled salmon with maple syrup, soy sauce and garlic, but rubbed in some lemon pepper. The salmon was delicious! Thank you for a great recipe for grilled salmon!!!!
I would like to try this recipe on a cedar plank. Any recommendations when using a plank, like leaving the skin on, or cooking time? What about getting grill marks on the fish using a plank?
By the way, I've been using melted butter with brown sugar and soy sauce as my salmon marinade for a few years now. I thought that was easy...this is even easier!
Cedar plank can be a little tricky. First soak the planks in water for 30 minutes. Next, if using salmon with the skin on, grill the salmon for a couple of minutes skin side up to get your marks. Then place on the plank skin side down, and place back on the grill, and cover grill with lid. You want your plank to smoke, and not burn. I plan on doing a video on this in the future. Hope this helps for now.
why not , just make enough maranade , too couver it all, instead of haveing too turn salmon over..

Thanks
500XC2 2 years ago
Cedar plank can be a little tricky. First soak the planks in water for 30 minutes. Next, if using salmon with the skin on, grill the salmon for a couple of minutes skin side up to get your marks. Then place on the plank skin side down, and place back on the grill, and cover grill with lid. You want your plank to smoke, and not burn. I plan on doing a video on this in the future. Hope this helps for now.
