Can you belive this is my first time watching Natalie Wood acting? And I have to say I'm gonna watch some of her movies, I like her a lot in this scene! :)
The splendour is not of the grass but it went it of our youth and of our beauty; this youth and this beauty that do not have to look for desperately because remains hidden like a small and luminous sun that lights the grass on which other young and passionate bodies join lovingly.
Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower, We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind;
The explanation of the poem is given in the final scene of the film.
This young couple suffers from their bad education. Padrone (Warren Beatty) and madrone (Natalie Wood). But at the end of the film, they seem to have overcome the majority of their problems and as young adults, capable of dealing with the diffulties, that lie ahead, getting strenght from good memories in the past.
@4807avh I really don't agree with you on your interpreattaion. I think the end of the movie just show how their lives are ruined and how the social conventions destroyed their love. So "nothing can bring back the hours of splendor". This is not time for grieves any more but the life has lost its beauty. You have to read the French Book Belle du Seigneur by Albert Cohen wich is also really releavant regarding on the beauty of a youth love !
It always amuses me to see the teacher looking over her classroom with some exasperation after she asks the question and all the kids try to avoid paying attention to her - and when Natalie is singled out, everyone else is silently relieved that it wasn't them. It's so typical of school.

An awesome band, named 'Miischa,' used the quote where Deanie discusses the poem and made it even more powerful.
Good movie, good band.

This is a true story. The playwright heard about it growing up in his hometown.

In general Wordsworth gives me a cramp because he's a lousy poet compared to Frost or Tennyson but when Natalie Wood reads his lines he is immortal.

Great actress, great scene and great director.

Thanks Elia Kazan, Natalie Wood and Warren Beaty.

There is a song that uses this clip of Natalie Wood reciting this poem. I can't remember the band -- Do any of you know the name of that band?

This poem is my favorite of all time although I don,t agree with one word of it. I believe in idealism and innocence and I will never change. Peace
