Schnauzer Grooming

is anyone going to even acknowledge the grooming video. i myself is a groomer and the line was way off. and the elbow to chest is wrong that line is supposed to be at an angle not straight. i have noticed this a lot in these videos. i watch them for different outlooks and i never know i might learn something new. but so far all these cuts are wrong.

As far as I'm concerned a dog is a living creature that should be loved and treated with respect, who really cares how it's hair is cut as long as it's happy and healthy. I clip my schnauzers and give it a Schnauzer look. I can't believe how anal most of the people are who are writing in complaining about how the person cut the coat. If they don't show the dog ... who cares! Just love it and enjoy it.

People care about the dog's fur way too much, I agree, but dog owners get the pooch's haircut because they love them, because schnauzer's fur does get long, which makes them hot during the summer. If you care about your dog's health and happiness you would get it's hair cut so he doesn't die of heat stroke. And while you're at it, you may as well make him look handsome......why not???

Why would you want to crop a dog's ears, its a cruel and senseless thing to do to an animal. The same with tail docking. There is nothing better than seeing your dog's tail wagging with happiness when they play with other dogs or you. I think there's something wrong with people who see these mutilations as something that enhances their dog in some way.

The schnauzer is a handstrippes breed, show dogs or not! It has an purpose to maintane the original fur. If you want a schnauzer and are lazy about the gromming, don't get a schnauzer!

You really think people who are not getting a schnauzer for use as a show dog actually care if they shave or groom the dog? I get my dog hand stripped because I like the feel of the wiry coat, however not everyone has someone in their area that will do this. As well many people who hand strip the dog's coat rather than shave them usually charge a lot more to do so. Most people are not willing to pay the extra money to keep the coat feeling and looking proper.

@jbonkerz if you can't take proper care of a dog don't get one. don't shave a dog!!!! It doesn't have to look like a show dog but you still should take proper care of the fur. just take the dead fur out with the fingers. What's the big deal? Gosh, they need their fur when it's cold? after shaving they won't have the same isolation.

True they do need their fur in the winter, and like I said I do not shave my dog, he is hand groomed.

However, if you want a real schnauzer look, then when the dog is a puppy do not have the ears clipped, and do not have the tail docked. When the dog gets older, do not hand strip nor shave the dog, and voila that is what the dog is supposed to look like, the way nature intended. Everything else is what we as humans prefer to have them look like.

That is perfectly fine then, I do not mind it either, although I think they are adorable with natural floppy ears :).

I just do not think anyone should HAVE to hand strip their schnauzer. It is all personal preference. :)

are these dogs extremly hyper? i use to have a mini and absoutely LOVED him. he had to get put down /: and my gma has his cousin and she isnt hyper unless you hype her up. same with my old mini. everywhere im reading about giants say theyre nothing like the minis and theyre reallllllllly hyper and energetic. is this true?

I have a giant and I do have to agree that clippering the coat does change the texture and colour, however, if you strip the coat it does give a nicer finish and it removes all the undercoat.

A Schnauzer must be stripped, not clippered, stripping encourages a dog's natural coat texture and color. Once a dog is clippered, the coat begins to soften and often the color will lighten to the point where it no longer resembles the dog's true genetic color. A stripped coat is harder, is dirt- and water-repellent, and does not mat as easily as a clippered coat.

I think it's kind of weird..but..I've never seen a handstripped schnauzer in my life! I think thats rediculous, because they lose all of there beutiful salt and pepper color...their color is grey when it's clipped. One time I saw a big ugly schnauzer (clipped of course) with huge pimples underneith his skin!

I always groom my schauzys myself but the other day i took my girl to the groomers and they cut her like i always cut her but shorter overall. i didn't like it. i'll stick to home grooming!

The groomer is merely demonstrating the AKC standard for grooming a schnauzer. It is a personal preference how one chooses to groom the schnauzer.

In some cases (most common cause spaying/neutering) hormonal changes will cause a coat to change in texture and density, making handstripping impossible and painful for the dog. In these circumstances clipping is the most practical and easiest option.

if if stick to only 'comb" as you stated, the dog will suffer from over heating!! I had my dog for several month with a long coat not knowing her panting was getting worse by day. I thought she was sick at first, instead she was suffering for the heat in december!

I've always groomed my own dogs. I don't have show dogs, I have spoiled house pets. And to me, spoiled does not mean a show cut. I would rather my dog be comfy and happy then constantly messed with to look "show quality".

I have a schnauzer now, and the only thing I usually do is leave him with the facial hair.

He would never stand that still holding his face like that.

But like I said before, I groom my own dogs, I see no reason to be fancy if you aren't showing.

Honestly there are so many ways to groom schnauzers some people just trim them and some go all out and groom like show dogs either way they have to at least be groomed to some extent to avoid getting matted hair i have owned a schnauzer for 1 1/2 years now and i groom him myself so everyone has their own opinions on what they should look like !!!!

In Germany we dont style schnauzer like this! And you know- schnauzers are an original german breed! The dog in the video is nice but his "style" ist very ugly!

By the way, while I do agree that the hair cut in the video is absolutely ugly i have seen the most beautiful schnauzers in USA.

The schnauzer is a working dog a farm dog and it should also look like that. The dog in this video looks gay, like a big caricature of a lap dog, a schnauzer schould never be styled like that, it is an abuse of the breed.

Show dogs are handstripped; pets are clippered. You think every poodle owner keeps their dog in a lion cut? Or every owner of a maltese doesn't trim a hair on their dog until it reaches the floor? i would have thought the grooming technique depends on the purpose of the dog. I suspect this dog is more of a companion animal rather than a show dog so that makes it more acceptable to clip rather than handstrip and take the eye brows down shorter.
