Jayzus, it's a couple of hours I'm listening to her via YouTube, and cannot get enough.............wonderful piper, wonderful fiddler, wonderful musician....
@gnomely1 yes although Katheryne Tickell plays in the Shetland style of fiddling learned from the late great Tom Anderson in Stirling so she actually plays in a scottish style at most times.
@ipi5hl But Northumbria was an Engle kingdom that stretched from the Forth to the Humber, why should it not be in England? It's people , the Engle (Angle) gave their name to England? Or do you mean Northumberland the county and if so, why?
@tommy3lions Yes it was an angle kingdom, but England didn't exist. The Treaty of York carved up large parts of Northumbria between England and Scotland. As far as the 18th century going south of middlebrough was referred to as 'going to england.'
@ipi5hl Hello bud, appy new year to ya. Regardless of Englands existence tho geez, the people were Angle/Northumbrians as far north as Edwins Burgh so surely southern Scotland should be part of England, quite a lot of Angle DNA floating about in that area as shown in various scientific studies. But ya can have Middlesborough tho mate, we'll have all your Tunnocks tea cake factories in exchange :-)
I LOVE this music - what a lovely time the people must have had at that concert - and what an amazing sound from the pipes - great stuff from the north !
heard your name mentioned and went to see you at the sage for your xmas party with sting awesome love the music now call into simonburn tearooms kathryn and say hello anytime
ah man, would have loved to have been at that performance.. saw it in the sage booklet and tried to get ticketsd but it was sold out. Bet it was great!? Her borderlands Album is in my blood.
this is one fine little gel an ye,s all go out an buy tha ol record bout the shky ditnt fall, apsalootly fantastic music that girl plays on there , she,s top o the tree an no mistake --kilby----
Shes more closed fingers in her style and uses quite a lot of keywork. Some Northumbrian pipers don't like her style as it breaks with the trad. But hey we cant all live in Billy Piggs shaddow forever. Music moves on.
Wonderful! Pat, on BelfastFolk, mentioned Kathryn Tickell a day or two ago ... I'd never heard of her. But I'll certainly have to listen out for more of her music now. Terrific! I'm very impressed.
Memories of Brownrigg School and sunday afternoons spent walking up Hareshaw lynn outside Bellingham, North Northumberland in the early 1960s.

From Northumbria, this is the best of English folk music and the closest in temperament and colour to the Irish/Scots music.
