  • There is a very very detailed MN website on the net. Hint: it has 7.62 x 54 in it's URL title.

  • Im strong but im short. im 5'6" would you recommend the carbine for Me

  • Great review, sir. I have one of these (1942, Izhevsk) that I plan on using as my deer rifle for the near future, and I'll admit I've kinda fallen in love with it after a couple of plinking days...

  • I was thinking of about cutting my barrel and having it recrowned. My question is what is the main reason for doing so? I notice that alot of people like shortening there barrel. Thank you for your time.

  • Russian guns are always interesting to look at, becuase most of them have a uniqueness that you only find in Russian manufacturers

  • I know it's been mentioned before but thank you for serving our country.

Second, awesome reviews. I feel as I know this gun and I haven't even bought it yet.

  • I am thinking about getting a Mosin-Nagant rifle. Who makes (or imports) the best overall rifles. God bless our troops and vets!

  • weaker people or women, haha good one

  • at the end im hearing peanut butter jelly time, hilarious

  • i had a enfield no.3 mk.1 the trigger pull on that was very light it was a little over 2 pounds on a 15 pound gun. i believe it was made as a sniper. had "U.S. property" on the left side of the ejection port (witch i found weird on a British gun) forget the month but it was made in 1943

  • isn't the rear sight adjustable to the units "arshins"

  • Why would a rifle be more accurate with a bayonette attached? Does it actually flex the barrel or something?

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb i think you're talking about the m44, the reason its more aaccurate w/ the bayonet out is cause it was designed to shoot that way. it was sighted in with the bayonet out and when its folded in it has more weight on the right side of the barrel. that changes the harmonics and a bunch of stuff

  • There are people out there that can hit something at 1000 meters with these things ;)

  • @hindflight Yup. One of the guys is here on Youtube.com and goes by the screen name mag30th. His long range shooting is ridiculous!!!

  • I GOT THE MOSIN NAGANT 91/30 WITH A HEX

  • Hey there, I've got a russian made toz-17 22lr with the same type of bolt safety as your russian m38, it is pretty awkward to use :s

  • good review, i am bout to add a nagant to the collection, yankeeprepper has a good video of a bullpup kit for the nagant bro check it out

  • the square symbol means referbished as in "used" right?

  • @DrewDawg50

Pretty much. It means when the arsenal got the weapon back from a soldier or it got damaged in the warehouse or whatever they doctored it up to get it back to specs.

  • Proud to be Finnish.

  • Nice review man, and thank you for serving our country! my brother is just about to finish basic training, then he's off to college, so i really appreciate our troops. I don't understand the hippies who think you guys are evil murderers...

Either way, were the M44's (ones with bayonet) zero-d with the bayonet attached, and the M38's (without bayonet) zero-d with no bayonet? because i know that some models are more accurate with the bayonet attached...

  • @psychoclown420 Most M91-30s were actually sighted in with the bayonet attached. In fact, they didn't even issue scabbards for the bayonets. once they were attached, they were pretty much impossible to remove.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 yeah the bayonet on my 91/30 is almost impossible to remove.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 what version is the carbin or shorter one

  • @Iraqveteran8888 That's wierd you say that, my M91/30's bayonet flew off the front the first time I shot it. Unfortunately we fired over a river during flood season and my bayonet landed right in it. Bout fifteen feet of water going at thirty miles per hour. Hit my target though! Fml

  • @psychoclown420 Fuck Hippies. These guys are heros. However, the wars they are fighting is not for the United States. Israel is forcing us in these wars for the national security of Israel. Jews are our boss.

  • @shasha1873 Israel is not our boss, and america is more and more distancing itself from israel. And i am by no means and Anti-semite, as i love israel.

  • bought a hex reciever mosin the other day. it had a piece cut out near the reciever, when i opened the bolt i saw holes in the side where the wood was cut/refurbished. I figure it was an old sniper rifle. so i paid 99.00 and bought it. any thoughts anyone? If it was an issued sniper rifle is the value higher? works great btw, best 100 dollar gun ive ever bought!

  • My mosin nagant is weird, its an Izhevsk made in 1941, it has the Izhevsk marking in a wreath, but the weird part is that it has a tula star stamped right above the Izhevsk mark, the star is poorly stamped into the receiver so its like half way stamped but nonetheless, idk whats up with that

  • "A circle with a C in it, That's the Chatellerault or Chatellerault? I don't know how to say that damn word." haha I love this guy.

  • itsmarked with thousand meters becouse a russian battle doctrine a bunch of guys give covering fire from long ranges while another bunch flanks

  • HI Iraqveteran, is the Mosin Nagant Hex 1891/30 for 89.95 the good one to get from aimsurplus

  • @223inyourskull Thats the average going rate.

  • what were the web sites that sell them with the accessories?

  • An advantage to the spliced stock was that it would cope better with cold temperature changes associated with Russia and Finland. The stock wouldn't deform as much as a single piece example would.

  • That safety is a total pain in the ass, but overall a great rifle!!

  • im goin mobile lol

  • im having a hell of a time pulling up the stock rings while field stripping, and I keep scratching my stock with them. any tips on how to make them slide a little easier?

  • @flythegadsden Coming soon...

  • that whole weight of the trigger would such on a ma deuce/M2

  • haha people that arent as strong children, women haha i love sexism!

  • great videos man, fun to learn about my new 91/30. thanks

  • at 4:04 when you said this poorly drawn star made me laugh.

  • dude very nice review check out my browning maxus review i will put up

  • Quick question: does the bayonet affect accuracy, whether it's open or not? (specific

    For m44

  • just bought me one of these and wished i knew how to tell what model i have ? wanted a decent deer hunter and got it with the grease can, ammo pouch and bayonet for $ 99 .never fired .its a 1944 round and also has the star marking.

  • very good video , didnt even know there was a safety on this gun .

  • i found a mark with what looks like a grave stone with a C in it

  • mine has a hammer and sickle on it

  • sorry about my previous comment, that was uncalled for, very informative review, looking forward to seein more :)

  • @SepticProductions

No problem...I know you were kidding. Glad you like the videos.

  • do u hav an albanian version cause ik of a albanian SKS

  • @Iraqveteran8888

@0:33 you mention receivers. I saw a An M1891/30 infantry rifle at a Gander Mtn, for 129.99, (it's gone now :( ) But it was marked "r1943". I believe it was an authentic Russian infatntry rifle in WW2. W D U T?

  • my finn m39 has a o c and a o p whats the p?

  • You either have an inspector's mark or the "Puolustuslaitos" marking which would place it as having served in the Defence Department for a period of time.

  • @Iraqveteran8888

As far as the markings go, you forgot the Russian Communist Sickle-Hammer symbol. Just sayin'.

  • Hammer is Tula

  • Great video man. I have an Izzy M44 and M38 and they are my favorite rifles. I plan on getting an M91/30 to add to my collection.

  • I've got 1943 m38 great bore re crowned no import marks Russian made and crudly made at that the reciver has gouge's in it from the arsenal but it's a sweet gun I've also ggot a m98 full lenght Turkish Mauser made in 43'

  • hey man don't know if someone said it but just trying to help you. what youw ere talkin about izzy , is Izmash which would be pronounced like eezmash

  • Will the Mosin-Nagant fire a round if you decock the rifle with a round in the chamber?

  • @amaya1000rr

In theory, no, but given the well used nature of many examples, I would point it in a safe direction first.

  • After watching your videos on refinishing (the K98), I find myself confident (read: "less scared") that I can do it myself on one of my 91/30s. It appears that you've refinished the stock on that Finnish Mosin. What finish did you use? I'd like to use the same one as it came out really well on yours.

  • @YYZed

It is Birchwood Casey Gunstock. There are better finishes out there, but it is beautiful though....Gets a lot of goo goo eyes at the range.

  • Well, my own M-Ns are laminated and ugly. I'm going to get them out and shoot some groups with them to see which is better (I have to IZZYs, a hex and a round) and then finish the stock on the superior rifle.

  • @YYZed

That sounds like a good plan! I am going to be scoping the M39 you see in this video soon. Going with a rock solid mount, glass bedding, trigger work, etc.

All the work will be documented on youtube, respectively.

  • I tried bedding my first 91/30, but I don't know how well it turned out. I used the Box o' Truth JB Weld method and I don't know really what it helped, or IF it helped. Also, I have apparently used "laminated" incorrectly. They're both solid wood stocks. I was referring to the nasty outer layer of crap that covers everything including the metal areas.

  • simo häyhä, a finnish sniper used this kind of weapon without a scope. lonest kill with a distance of 550m, during the winter war

  • @volvoapina

550 meters is child's play for a good Finnish Mosin Nagant.

  • then mine is refurbished, thanks i did not know that

  • yea, with my nagant after shooting it a while, the bolt seems to get tighter and tighter, harder to cock, any solution for this problem?

  • I am sending you the first part of a video series I made that I think will help you a lot.

  • Love the Mosin Nagant, so happy I found my m91/30 ex sniper at gander mountain for only $130, plus the ammo is fairly cheap and abundant. 5 stars!

  • just got mine. without this vid i wouldnt have known where to start. Thanks.

  • Glad you liked it. Congrats with your new purchase.

  • The rifle has a short bolt handle because Russians considered it to be sticking out and touching other objects such as leaves, walls etc. That's why they made the bolt handle short.

  • would this rifle be good for deer hunting?

  • Hell yeah...Load up a nice 180 grain SP and you'll be in like flint.

  • my mosin has the triangle mark on it, but on the top back part of the bolt, there is a small cross. just wondering if that means anything.

  • It's funny that you mention that because I was shooting my buddies M44 the other day and noticed it had the same mark.

I can only assume it is either an accuracy proof testing marking, or other sort of inspectors marking.

  • yeah mine has an empty diamond on the receiver all by itself.

the rest of the marks are on the barrel shank.

  • I have the triangle with the arrow in it stamped on my 91/30. Is that good? I don't think that the quality of that specific type was mentioned in this video.

  • Yeah, both of the main factories produce great guns. Hex or round?

    Sorry...I guess I didn't cover EVERYTHING....lol

  • Round, and it was made in 1944.

  • good video. im buying one this weekend. i cant wait! but gonna have to save up for ammo lol. anyway thanks for serving hooah

  • yoo.. good video... i do have a question tho... can u please give me some advice on what firearm to buy... a mosin nagant 91/30 rifle.. or a dragunov.. im hopin u kno what a dragunov is.. if u dont please tell me the pros and cons of the mosin nagant rifle.. not the carbine.. if u can... thanks

  • Pros:

    Cheap to buy and shoot

Rugged, reliable, and pretty accurate with the proper tuning.

    Cons:

There are many vairents and the novice buyer could end up getting something they don't really want.

In retrospect to other firearms, the markup on Mosin Nagants on the retail level is very high. It would be the equivilent of going into your gun store and paying 799 for a Glock.

  • My M44 has "C" stamps, is that weird?

  • Hard to say without seeing the stamps in person. Is the c inside a circle?

  • Comment removed

  • Yes it also has a "Y" in a circle down and left from the crest.

  • Hmm...Tough to say.

Many times, the arsenals would have inspectors that often used their own personally made inspection stamps.

This is true with many Finnish arms as well...the inspector would make a custom stamp that only he/she would use.

You very well could have a unique or odd inspectors stamp.

Is the mark in the metal or wood?

Hard to say without seeing it.

  • On the metal, the "Y' is probably a proof mark but the little "c" stamps leave me confused. I'll try and get some pictures up.

  • Yeah photos would help. Im curious now

  • I just bought an m44 carbine made in 1945, it is very accurate, close to my garand! Nice vid series, and thanks for your service to the country.

  • Thanks for the support and you are welcome.

  • My mosin nagant has a hevy triger pull. I can probably estimate it over 10 lb

  • Sounds about right. Bear with me...Ill be posting a video on how to get the trigger smoother on the cheap. Check out my "making your mosin rock" series for a good primer though

  • i bought a mosin nagant shortly after i retuned from mosul iraq and i have to say im very happy with the performance of this rifle. it has a great round and is pretty dang reliable.

  • do you cheak the headspace on your mosin nagants? i was looking at getting the headspace guage but they require you to remove the extractor and i dont know how to remove it from the bolt .... i really dont want this old rifle to blow up in my face haha

  • Initially, when I aqcuire a specimin, I will confirm that the head space is safe.

Removing the extractor is tricky business. The best thing to do is buy a set of gauges that have a slot cut to clear the extractor... ;)

GENERALLY, as long as the lock up is nice and tight, and your firing pin protrusion is good, you should be good.

If you dont have access to gauges, just tie the rifle to a tire and fire 4-5 rounds from it with a string. Check for pressure signs and brass flow.

  • Awesome video. Imma bit worried about shooting mine, which I will get my hands on Wednesday because of the whole proper pertrusion of the firing pin, I have heard its dangerous to fire one until you check to see if everything is alright with it, but I aint no gunsmith and dont wanna take anything apart that I cant put back together. You think a gunsmith can help me make sure everything is good to fiure before I shoot it for the 1st time, what would be the fee to take it apart and inspect it? thx

  • A competent gunsmith could check these areas in about 10 minutes. I'd charge 10 bucks.

  • if your rifle came with the tool its pretty easy to check yourself theres some videos out here on youtube on how to adjust the firing pin protrustion.... if you wanna save a buck and iraqveteran8888 has a good video on assembly and disassembly of the bolt..

  • Also, you can use the feeler gauge of your digital caliper to check as well. If it exceeds 0.095" it is considered unsafe.

  • GREAT review. 5 stars only cause you cant do more. You have convinced me 2 get a mosin nagant 91/30 next year.

  • Thanks for the kind words.

  • hey friend, a few questions. what m.n do i have? same as your m38, but much longer.that is a fact.how can i identify the markings on stock? reason i have the "c" marking on stock but looks like the old tomb stone shape insted of the circle around the "c". all #'s match, it is a "izzy"as you show. 1942r. tones of markings i'd like to know about. well, i got it out and was trying to figure out what i have. not trying to make you work any way, but you will be rewarded for helping me out by x-mass.

  • I have an M38, M39, and 2 M91/30s.

    You likely have the M91/30.

If I had to guess, you probably have a round reciever.

The "C" marking is likely an inspector's marking as a round receiver MN will not be an original French Contract MN.

If you have the box with a line going diagonally through it, it means it was arsenal refinished in Russia.

My M38 has a "3" stamped under the forearm. Likely an inspector's marking like your "C".

  • What do you think about floating the barrel or even removing the barrel wood all together?

  • I am going to make a video in the next few months addressing this subject.

There are several things you can do without drastically altering the rifle at all.

In the meantime, check out my Making your Mosin rock series.

  • Yeah I can't deny that it is reliable, but the bolt is just too dang short. I can use it, but it would be nice to get a curved one.

  • About the bolt on the M38, do you know where I could get a curved bolt for it? I noticed the lack of leverage.

  • You can buy a curved bolt assembly from several distributers, but I really don't see a point in it. With the proper TLC, these rifles are very capable and dependable.

  • Scandinavians make everything to a high quality.

  • I've got a 1925 tula hex 91/30 and I've got a B on the stock and a hell more cartushis

  • when you were talking about te bolt not giving you leverage witch some people cant open i feel if you cant load and cock a rifle you have no buisness shooting it

  • That's probably the same thing the Russians thought. In retrospect, it is a military rifle that was designed to be used by pissed off burly Reds, so I'm sure their deep hated for the Facists gave them all the motivation they need to rack these guns!

There is nothing wrong with smoothing out the action so youngers folks or the ladies can use it is there?

    LOL

  • true there isnt any prob with that

  • The Barnell stuff isnt shabby but the M30 is the way to go in my opinion. Handloading is the ultimate way to go for these really...

  • I should get a Finn M39 someday, they really perfected the Mosin rifle, a real beaut!

  • You got that right. Wait until you shoot one....You'll feel guilty for not shooting your Russian 91/30s

  • I'm sure the hexes are better because they are pre-war.

  • I've seen some round receiver guns that can shoot good too...just depends mainly on the condition and size of the bore. Sometimes, if the bores on them are really large, they won't handle surplus ammo worth a damn.

  • Great Guns!

  • You forgot the sestorysick(sp?) arsenal, and the VKT finn marks. It's pronounced eez-hev-sk.:) I get screwed up on it all the time and just call it izzy, but I sound even dumber saying that. lol

  • I didnt want to worry about covering the Finn arsenals too much, because a newcomer to these rifles is likely confused enough already. That will be a future video as soon as I have a specimen of each type.

  • Agreed.
