yes, I the book, Darry HITS Ponyboy and in the movie Darry PUSHES Pony but they didn't want Ponyboy to actually get hurt. Just like in the book, they don't curse as much. The book and the movie are similar but they are not exactly alike. In the book they talk about Sandy, Soda's girlfriend, and they talk about the letter that he sent to her and she returned it but in the movie, they don't say anything about Sandy.
