with the poor quality of the recording, for which i am thankful, you cannot have an idea of how properly 'heavenly' Vickers voice is.Like "cybeno" i attended the opera, 3 times in 1974. Does anybody know of a quality recording of this opera sung in Paris by Vickers and G Jones?
Vickers is here after his best, however, smashing what accuracy and gentleness he achieves!! In the performance noticeable is also profound and clear voice of Ghiaurov - here absent - and unimaginably crystal vibrato of young Jones. And how she's convincingly eating Nerone at 5:30! Why, oh why isn't it available on DVDs????
@operamaniak81 Love that these two masters of their craft went out of their repertoire and gave us, their audience this. True artists. I adore Vickers voice here.

Why baroque opera must sound boring? Singers without voice should be sent somewhere.
Poor, poor Monteverdi. Thanks God things like this happens once in a lifetime.
Bravi, bravi!
Beside the great voices, can't tell if it's cuz of the recording, but it's a bit confusing. "Unclear". But still love those wagnerian full of harmonic voices singing such a delicate repertoire. Absolutely works.
In fact, this lower repertoire, I prefer with fuller voices, and they're perfectly capable of singing piano.
I was lucky enough to attend this performance in Paris 35 years ago.
Unforgottable. 20 minutes of non stop standing ovation after this moment of pure magic. It was before the barocco school imposed its style on any Monteverdi performance.
Unfortunately the sound of this video is really poor. I know this performance was filmed by the French television.
I believe it was Julius Rudel ( Ihave a disc of this production and JR is the conductor) so I assume he conducted all the performances, although it may not necessarily be the case.
Nowadays the mezzos sing Nero but I don't think they sound or look as good as Vickers. Such singing from such a powerful voice. they are both remarkable
This is sublime! On the face, the casting is bizzare. Yet, both look and sound perfect for the parts. Wonder if there's any hope for the video to be released commercially. Thanks for up-loading this precious footage.

Lovely but with a very different more regal, even etheral carachter as Poppea here is singing a third higher then in the usual version...
I prefer the lower version....somehow more intimate and visceral

Totally adore it.
Vickers is starting to become one of mine favorite tenors.

Great performance. Funny, this acting performance reminds me of their Wagner work.
