Americans should have been bought i-16's from ussr and use them as carrier planes against zekes, they were faster or almost as fast, rugged, better armed and had very good maneuverability...they were almost equal on turn fights.
@aure232 only problem from experience early models had hand crank landing gear hard to accomplish in combat plus i-16 was a bear to fly , very touchy...
I always wondered why they never fitted a 3 bladed prop to the I-16, especially the later types w/more powerful motors. It certainly would have improved its sustained rate of climb to an even more impressive rate. Anyone know?
Cause i-16 engine had a big radius, so prop must have bigger radius too, creating the same haul, for better usage of airflow, and not just using it all for engiene cooling. And the bigger radius/haul ratio has a two-bladed prop. Sorry for bad english.
Mr. spritz0, in the Spanish Civil War contemptuous pro-nazi called it "rata" (rat). Respectfully, next time write better "mosca" (fly). Sorry, is my opinion.
Estimado Mr. Kevin: I understand that you are a soldier who govern yourself by the codes. I read and listened spanish I-16 pilots ( Mr.Bravo, Tarazona, Arias, ...) always "mosca" and the NATO code is too far for me. Please, I don´t want brother you, like spanish only give a bit of information. Best regards, Manuel.
alot of skill was needed to flies these babies pilots complained about the lack of head room inside the cockpit so they made it open cockpit even in winter
Incredible roll rate.

I-15 was called Chato in Spanish. Needed hucks starter to start engine. Had superb dogfighting capabilities.

Well I thought that you could write in Spanish,"Rata" was the name given to this plane by the Fascist and I don't think
that wasn't to wrong when I called you
Facha which is a derogatory way of saying Fascist son of a bitch.
