Not exactly hologram, just optical illusion. It would be a touchable hologram if you could actually feel the whole thing without being dazzled by the un-3D-ness of it
Wooow, good job Microsoft Research! Thanks to your ground breaking reasearch and tech from now i can imagine my holodeck in my starship 20-30 years from now! (y)
This is just Microsoft trying to rip off the 3D display sony had. Not the Playstation one but one that is shaped like a cylinder and you can rotate the image and when you look at different angles it is like you are actually looking at the object
It is amazing technology but the description is definitely mis-leading. It says it is 360° viewable which in a way is true but most people here probably thought it meant viewable from below and above etc. I want to see this in action in 10 years time, see how far it has progressed :)
1st, 360 viewable, doesnt mean Stereoscopic. You can get a flat image, no matter where you look at it... just different perspectives. 2. Unless the table is 3ft diameter, the display is way too small. 3.Touch is BS,u dont Touch ur car 2 move it, u grab its far-superior physical controls. 4. Ud get far better usable interaction w/ a sensor array & Imax3d style displays. 5.Imagine the greesy finger mess. lol 6. Its useless & sux. Waste of development money.
@xiaou2 it's a step you moron. Scientists don't just invent things out of nowhere. Look a t the first photograph, or the first tv or the first elevator, they all suck. Science is based in innovation and progress upon that innovation. This is useless, what will come out of this is probably the future of technology
@sirdavies94 - I disagree. Its a Dead End. There are better solutions already available. This isnt something New. Its a rehash of existing technology. Its Short-Sighted, Impractical, & at its best, would only be used for a select few very specific applications. A display of meaningful proportions, would require a +4ft diameter parabolic mirror. Its fairly pointless.
This is nothing new. Everyone saw this coming they took the famous 3D pig illusion and put a screen that played a video so when all the mirrors reflected and focused near the top on the device you would see the object moving.
Smart enough to do all that... too dumb to sync the Camera's shutter speed to eliminate that hideous strobing effect? Really? - not to mention the crappy lighting, shotty low contract video quality and half-arsed editing. What a shame you couldn't show your work off properly. :-\ I'd have figured you'd be more proud of it, and got someone in who knew what they were doing with a camera and editing.
Fascinating but PLEASE work on the timing of the video as I spent more time rewinding and pausing so I could read the text than actually watching the video.
@Granatenman I entered just to post the exact same comment. Really, you can't even see half the video with how poorly lighted it is and how crappy the video quality is.
@Duodecillian It's fine... Apple will use the tech in 5 years and claim it's their own revolutionary and magical invention, and they'll get all the credit anyway
