LMAO at :16 "even a thin cloth can protect you" From an Atomic Bomb, PURE genius why didnt i think of that. Man i could get rich selling Atomic bomb proof towels, just wrap your self up immerse yourself in 10 million degrees of heat plus 400 mph blast wave and youll be fine.
@turgeo2004 I know, it's like the guys who made this video completely forgot that this kind of shit is going to ignite from the thermal pulse which means your head is now wrapped in FIRE.
Do you remember what to do when you see the flash?
Well, all that anyone would do logically is just be in shock and get fried or have their clothes fused the next moment.
I talked about it with a friend, and see that despite it's scientific flaws (non would help if you are that close to a blasy site) it actually would boost the morale.
But it's flawed and in my opinion, quite repetative and boring.
Isn't "duck and cover" what pretty much anybody would do if they saw an atomic blast anyways? What's the alternative? "Run around like a headless chicken"?
@Balnazzardi you wouldnt even see the flash but you feel it when its burning down your flesh...if you not too close to be dead in the first nanosecond.
Not necessarily... I mean, the flash travels at the speed of light, because, well... it's light. But the radiation travels more slowly. I'm not sure how fast exactly, but alpha and beta type radiation are emissions of particles, thus they are incapable of travelling at the speed of light. so you might have even as long as a minute after seeing a flash to crawl down into the bomb shelter, or AHAHAHAHAHAHA crawl inside a refrigerator... AHAHAHAHAH
This isn't actually that stupid, you know. The flash from a nuclear bomb is visible far away from the actual "you're definitely dead" zone. Covering up with something like a blanket or a newspaper will help shield you from the initial heat wave, as well as some debris from the two blast waves (outward and inward) that follow.
lol if you see the flash, it's already too late when ur' outside far away from a shelter or house...the only thing you can do is : to pray for god's help !
@rhcp rx bandits I was alive then ( Cuban Missile Crisis)!! We had a air raid drill , went to the sub sub basement in school and then sent home. My mother was in tears because she realized( having just come from post war UK ) that we would never make it home , or if we did there would be nobody there. Trust me -we were not stupid and we were very aware. This was merely a way to try and give us humans a preceived measure of control over an uncontrollable situation. WE came "that close"
The most powerful Nuke ever made, tested, etc... was the Soviet Tsar Bomba. Much much MUCH higher quality than anything the americans ever made. And even though the accuracy of their ballistic missiles had a greater CEP than the american Minuteman missiles (about 500m for Soviet missiles and about 200m for american ones) it didn't bloody matter!!! They were nukes for christs sake!!! I'd rather have been on the side of the Soviets with a stockpile of Tsar Bomba's...
Sorry, strike that. I'd rather have been living on anouther planet instead. If they ever exchanged nukes, I'd much rather have been living on another planet, than anywhere on Earth...
There were doccumentaries in the 80's that showed and told us about all the different things we could expect if there ever were to be a nuclear war. They terrified me so much, I had trouble sleeping at night. For years!!!
@emochild987 Not really. Even a piece of cloth or a newspaper IS better than nothing at all, and giving people advice, useless or not, helps ease fear and limit mass panic.
Absolutely. Check out some of the pics of survivors from Hiroshima/ Nagasaki. I remember seeing a picture of a woman wearing a checkered dress. There were patches of white ink and patches of black ink. Because the white ink was better at reflecting the radiation than the dark ink, she ended up with a checkered pattern of burns on her back.
When Duck and Cover was made, they didn't have the Hydrogen Bomb, which is orders of magnitude more powerful than the A-Bomb. While being less than a kilometer from ground zero meant probable vaporization, ducking into a gutter could really save your life at even a moderate distance.
If you want to be a cynical jerk and mock Bert the Turtle or 'America' (because its fashionable to be a cynic I guess), well go ahead. But you're being thoughtless ape.
Also, H-bomb = comparitively little radioactive fallout (though there will always be some)
whereas A-bomb = enormous amounts of radioactive fallout.
If it were an A-bomb going off, duck-and-cover would probably mean you'd live through the blast, only to die slowly and painfully from radiation sickness.
If it were a H-bomb then duck-and -cover wouldn't necessarily help you in the sightest. But if you DID survive the blast, your chances were good. Much better than with an a-bomb...
Wow, why are people angry over this? The idea was you had a better chance of survival if you laid on the ground and covered yourself. This is a really old video.. It was a time when people needed to be aware, but now, it's funny to watch. Stop bitching and just enjoy it
It is bullshit, and they knew it, but i think the people needed something to cling to. Back then, not quite as much was widely known about the results of a nuclear explosion, and people also needed to feel like they could do something.
Also, if you duck and cover, it means you wont leave a recognizable carbon shadow, which means people wont stop and get emotional about war, just fight back unquestioningly.
Holy shit....I now see why they thought this would work. You know when they sing Duck and Cover
Have you notice BEFORE they say "and cover" they make that noise which sounds like they're inhaling? They smoking a joint, which is why they thought this shit would work! Duck (inhales) and cover!!
Useless, the thermal effects of the bomb reach out furthest, the initial flash would ignite your skin, you would automatically fall to the ground and try the find cover like an ant being cooked by a magnifying glass. Cloth or paper is not going to protect you much either as those will likely ignite under the heat as well.

thank you, ill take that as a compliment, assuming you mean the retards that win the olympics and can memorize whole libraries. But if you mean the retards on this comment page that say duck and cover doesn`t work, then you can just go to hell. i know 3 people who lived in nagasaki at the time of the nuclear bomb dropping and they are still alive, only because they used the duck and cover method.
In reply to smallfrie81, the government has done plenty to hurt its people. Including but not limited to: passing laws that favor corporations or industry, rather than human good - launching illegal military operations - testing virus' on the public (yes, this does happen, a lot!) Wake up.
You guys are such numbnuts, ducking and covering obviously isn't going to save you if a bomb blows up above you. It will protect you from a massive sunburn and flying debris. People not far from Nagasaki survived with good health for their entire life, but they would have died immediatly if they had their head chopped off by flying glass because they followed dumb kids from the 20th century who would have told them "ROLZ DUCKING COVER DOESNT HELP AT ALL"
I think this video is only for the moral. If an atomic bomb explode, there will be no chances to survive, but with this video you can calm down the people of thinking that they are gonna to die if they see the flash.
OR ducked and covered, they will not see the very same hell coming to them xP and they can die in peace
They should've called this maneuver "Fuck! Bend Over" (to kiss your ass goodbye!)
BTW, how do you like the cynical ploy of these civil defense films to paint a benign picture of nuclear war to the public? Every single one of the people who made these films KNEW more than anyone that no one had a snowball's chance in hell at surviving. If you were so close to a detonation where you NEEDED to duck and cover, you were probably close enough to be fricaseed or blown apart by the blast.
Honestly I think most of the people talking about this are not really paying attention to the facts, for most people the whole duck and cover thing is something to laugh about and feel like we are so much smarter then people back in the 50s. In reality there are good reasons for it, it's really only laughable now because we're no longer threatened by imminent global atomic warfare. Admittedly they are a bit cheery about the prospects after the bomb goes off, but that was just the tenor back then
Actually this is not bad advice, at least you avoid an instant sunburn, protect yourself from flying glass and debris (which a atomic explosion would create a lot of) and protect your eyes from blinding intense heat. If there's ever an atomic bomb going off near you feel free to stand up, I'll take cover.
What's funny about it is that it's about the only thing you can do, but it wouldn't make much difference anyways. Within a certain radius of the blast, they'd be gone standing or covered.
Well into the late 1970s, my K-8 grammar school was still conducting these drills. Our principal had his feet squarely planted in the fifties. The teachers would say, "In the event of an emergency, if you see a flash---", whereupon some wiseacre would invariably interject, "You mean like if the Russkies nuke us?" That this scenario was precisely what our doughty authority figures had in mind was never conceded. But even at age 9, one knew the true formula: duck, cover, and KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE!
you actually just disintergate or get really bad flash burns or go blind. or develop cancer. duck and cover works if your behind a 5 foot think cement wall and 25 miles away.
At first I was afraid Dad was going to get hot coals on his head when he flung himself to the ground, but when he covered his head with newspaper I knew he'd be fine.
Oh my god! 'Even a thin cloth can protect you'...what a load of shit. It's funny to a fault though. I like it that both the USSR and the US were using ridiculous propoganda techinques to get their people in on the game...The US's evil democtatic wish to dominate as a super power...the USSR's evil communist dictatorship wishing to dominate as a super power. Like two kids fighting over a ball on the playground...and it's still going on today...war is stupid.
Well, a thin cloth can protect one from alpha and beta particles to a certain extent, but not from gamma particles. So there's a seed of truth in that a thin cloth can protect you. However, as far as I know, the radioactive fallout from an A-bomb consists mostly of gamma particles.
But seriously, a thin cloth is worth shit when a radioactive fallout from an A-bomb takes place. But still, a thin cloth can block alpha and beta particles to a certain extent.
I love the old duck and cover vids where someone does that and there's this huge crater but their is a pinacle of dirt supporting them in the middle of the crater and they're fine lol
You may laugh, but when you only have seconds, duck and cover is the best way to minimise the damage from a nuclear explosion - since the actual explosion only kills outright for a few kilometres radius, outside that you have to minimise the burns and the exposure to gamma rays. And the best way to do that is make sure the rays go through as much earth as possible. Duck and cover cuold easily halve or even quarter your radiation dose.
Actually what this is meant to do is stop you going blind from the flash, the explosion will kill you if you too close and then there's the radiation...
actually, even a thin layer such as cloth or newspaper can protect from flash-burns. you'll still get burned, but that little layer makes the difference between a 2nd degree and 3rd degree burn.
also, this film was mostly for morale, so people wouldn't go around scared shitless and they'd have a "confident sense of survivabilty". doesn't mean they'd actually live, but at least their minds were at ease.
it's terrible ducking and covering when you're just going to die. how is a newspaper supposed to do anything? won't you just burn faster? oh well maybe they didn't have common sense
@XkelleyvampyreX hmm we were the first country to create the atomic bomb and we are stupid? russia had to use fucking spies to learn how to make the atomic bomb. this duck and cover stuff only seems stupid now because our understanding of atomics is greater now. if anyy other country had created the atomic bomb first, they would have had little knowlege of atomics at first too. i will admit, we are not the smartest country. china is lol
YES! THATS IT! WE SHOULD CREATE A DOME OF OLD NEWSPAPERS AROUND THE USA! TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM NUKES!....lmfaooo, i doubt a newspaper can protect u from an atomic bomb explosion....

Depends where you're lying and where the warhead lands.
If you're far away and lying low you could survive the initial blast, especially back then when the warheads weren't as advanced as they are nowadays.
Still, if you're near the impact zone, you're more likely to die of the radiation or the extreme heat afterwards.

did they know ANYTHING about Radiation poisoning back then?

Wtf at 6-10? Did those people at the picnic disinigrate or something cause they just dissapeared in a flash
perukid796 3 years ago
Honestly I think most of the people talking about this are not really paying attention to the facts, for most people the whole duck and cover thing is something to laugh about and feel like we are so much smarter then people back in the 50s. In reality there are good reasons for it, it's really only laughable now because we're no longer threatened by imminent global atomic warfare. Admittedly they are a bit cheery about the prospects after the bomb goes off, but that was just the tenor back then
NorskeDivision 3 years ago
Actually this is not bad advice, at least you avoid an instant sunburn, protect yourself from flying glass and debris (which a atomic explosion would create a lot of) and protect your eyes from blinding intense heat. If there's ever an atomic bomb going off near you feel free to stand up, I'll take cover.
NorskeDivision 3 years ago 2
What's funny about it is that it's about the only thing you can do, but it wouldn't make much difference anyways. Within a certain radius of the blast, they'd be gone standing or covered.

i learned so mmuch! the highly flammable newspaper would totally help if an atomic bomb hit us! we wouldnt burn or anything...would we? XD

this must be from that city that has a nuke pass through it every six months.

this also must be that city that has atomic bomb-proof newspaper

Well into the late 1970s, my K-8 grammar school was still conducting these drills. Our principal had his feet squarely planted in the fifties. The teachers would say, "In the event of an emergency, if you see a flash---", whereupon some wiseacre would invariably interject, "You mean like if the Russkies nuke us?" That this scenario was precisely what our doughty authority figures had in mind was never conceded. But even at age 9, one knew the true formula: duck, cover, and KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE!

if more people had blankets in japan maybe less people would have been evaporated.

no chance ... the gamma rays would have gone right through the blankets

"even a newspaper will save you from a bad burn" ... BUT YOU'LL BURN IN HELL!!!
MarRilYunTidManJes 4 years ago
you actually just disintergate or get really bad flash burns or go blind. or develop cancer. duck and cover works if your behind a 5 foot think cement wall and 25 miles away.
usmc6891 4 years ago 6
ya but wut r the chances there will b a 5 foot wall there anyway?

exactly

At first I was afraid Dad was going to get hot coals on his head when he flung himself to the ground, but when he covered his head with newspaper I knew he'd be fine.

Oh my god! 'Even a thin cloth can protect you'...what a load of shit. It's funny to a fault though. I like it that both the USSR and the US were using ridiculous propoganda techinques to get their people in on the game...The US's evil democtatic wish to dominate as a super power...the USSR's evil communist dictatorship wishing to dominate as a super power. Like two kids fighting over a ball on the playground...and it's still going on today...war is stupid.
whiskeytango24 4 years ago 4
Well, a thin cloth can protect one from alpha and beta particles to a certain extent, but not from gamma particles. So there's a seed of truth in that a thin cloth can protect you. However, as far as I know, the radioactive fallout from an A-bomb consists mostly of gamma particles.
See "radioactive decay" from Wikipedia.
siipikarja 4 years ago
because we all know that wikipedia is an acurate source.
Chocoboknight99 3 years ago
Because we all do know that, yes. :D
But seriously, a thin cloth is worth shit when a radioactive fallout from an A-bomb takes place. But still, a thin cloth can block alpha and beta particles to a certain extent.

Because we all know that, if we duck and cover, we will be saved us from being vaporized by a nuke.

I love the old duck and cover vids where someone does that and there's this huge crater but their is a pinacle of dirt supporting them in the middle of the crater and they're fine lol
darkling9109 4 years ago
What's the point of this? Your just as dead.
scottboa 4 years ago
They put those fallout shelters so frigging far apart, you'd be a shadow on the pavement before you got there anyway.
LuvvyDuck 4 years ago
even if you was to reach one, and it was to hold together and protect you (which i doubt) the radiation will kill you, because radiation goes down.
segamanxero 4 years ago
Yeah, no..
If a bomb did drop..
They'd be fucked 3x over. Hiding under a newspaper or not..lmao
KingR3aper 4 years ago
You gotta love the initial gamma rays for that oh-so-warm, toasty womb feeling.
Tigford 4 years ago
You may laugh, but when you only have seconds, duck and cover is the best way to minimise the damage from a nuclear explosion - since the actual explosion only kills outright for a few kilometres radius, outside that you have to minimise the burns and the exposure to gamma rays. And the best way to do that is make sure the rays go through as much earth as possible. Duck and cover cuold easily halve or even quarter your radiation dose.
tylercal 4 years ago
Actually what this is meant to do is stop you going blind from the flash, the explosion will kill you if you too close and then there's the radiation...
randyslicker 4 years ago
actually, even a thin layer such as cloth or newspaper can protect from flash-burns. you'll still get burned, but that little layer makes the difference between a 2nd degree and 3rd degree burn.
also, this film was mostly for morale, so people wouldn't go around scared shitless and they'd have a "confident sense of survivabilty". doesn't mean they'd actually live, but at least their minds were at ease.
somerandomfireman 4 years ago 2
it's terrible ducking and covering when you're just going to die. how is a newspaper supposed to do anything? won't you just burn faster? oh well maybe they didn't have common sense

@Drewkuskilz I'm an American and sadly I must agree. We are not (collectively) the smartest subspecies.
XkelleyvampyreX 2 years ago
@XkelleyvampyreX hmm we were the first country to create the atomic bomb and we are stupid? russia had to use fucking spies to learn how to make the atomic bomb. this duck and cover stuff only seems stupid now because our understanding of atomics is greater now. if anyy other country had created the atomic bomb first, they would have had little knowlege of atomics at first too. i will admit, we are not the smartest country. china is lol
MrKittyCat22 1 year ago
Actually Russia built the bomb theirself.
And I'd say the credit goes to Ally Einy myself ;)
...Although I wouldn't say creating something capable of wiping out the human race is "Clever" :s
