  • just finished Half Broke Horses...loved it...ok I am off to buy The Glass Castle now....my new fav writer....

  • sahnebuch

    ...

  • Rex R.I.P love the Glass Castle

  • AMAZING book...........AMAZING story........AMAZING life. I'm so proud of you for "pulling yourself up by your boot straps". I can never look at Venus the same way. Three cheers Jeannette.

  • I'm in the process of doing book videos for my own books, I found this one. You did a great job, hope to meet you and possibly work with you in the future. I admire you.

  • This was one of my summer reading books (I had to read three) I liked it. The school has good taste :)

  • best book i've ever read, Senior in high school here

  • @frobrofityfoe

Same! Read it for school! :) I'm glad I chose it!

  • im still reading it :3

  • Hoarding! But I loved the book. I just hope it isn't another book like Another million pieces/lies

  • @AngeliaClaire what do you mean?

  • She is such a pretty and well spoken woman, I loved her book and I wish her all of the best!

  • this is the greatest book ive ever had to read for a class lol

  • @citrick94 true story bro.

  • I live where she use to in West Virginia...Her house was about at the end of my driveway... I see a few visitors a year who come to view it

  • CBS needs to know that the volume on this video is substandard. Would have loved to have heard what Jeannette had to say, but the volume, even turned up full blast, was too low.

  • @steffercat Read the book

  • I just finished the book, it was amazing. Her mother was so selfish though. The ending made me angry.

  • amazing book

  • I loved this book and half broke horses. She is a great writer!

  • Time to re-read this great book!

  • I read the book last week and was deeply impressed. I'm working mit people who suffer from alcohol dependency and also often talk to their - sometimes adult - children. What I recognize is that they rarely talk about their own feelings, it seems to be a kind of shelter to get through these intensive feelings. This is what I see here as well. Only a very little part of despair, anger, fear is apparent in the book. I always feel with the children of alcohol dependent people, but also with them.

  • oh my god she talks so fast

  • Going through this book now. It's definitely a captivating memoir.

  • Being Jeannette for a wax museum in social studies, this was really helpful(:

  • The two parts that I almost cried is when Jeannette's departure for New York with her dad seeing her off, and when she left her parent's apartment after her dad told her that he was going to die. Man, nothing more powerful than this story.

  • I'm reading the book right now, I think there is definitely a component of mental illness with both the parents. They are what they are, but flawed as they were, they did the best they could as parents. You could revile them as monsters - they were both monumentally selfish - but they did love their kids.

  • i am reading the book right now and it's just amazing how they lived how brave she is and how smart both her parents were

  • reading The Glass Castle in english... Its really the first school assigned book that i read and didn't want to stop.

  • this was an incredible book. although, half the book her parents turned on her, it was an awesome adventure traveling to all of these little known places, and hearing about how she chased out rapists with an axe at one part

  • I so like the mother! because the book i read "the glass castle" she is so sympathic!

  • I read the book if half the stuff in there is true i think her parents should be imprisoned.

  • I'm sorry but her mother and father were beasts. Her mother was a crazy, selfish c#nt and her father was a lying cheating, thieving, piece of sh*t . Hope "grandma" erma and uncle stanley are rotting in hell!!

Congrats to the Walls siblings on their success and survival.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Jennette's story.....I cried as I read...I felt Rex Walls was a cruel father..........I'm from nomadic family....maybe that's why I like it so much...you are a hard act to follow Jeannette !!!..

  • I love this story.

  • with a past like hers things have to be hard not to forget

  • @107rocker Yes she is, shes an awesome person

  • @107rocker No that's pathetic, this book is completely real. She's 50 for god's sake, we should be glad she remembered so many things!!!! The books is real and amazing!

  • Imagine how many people have walked and passed by this lady and not even known all the things she's been through her life?? That old lady walking around New York has been in Arizona, Nevada, California, West Virginia, everywhere and been through everything, even hanging from a window. I am not a book person, but im blown away by this story. I wish so bad I could contact Jeannette and tell her I admire her!!! Great book, the end was sad though...

  • @107rocker dude I know right. I am so caught on this book, it's absolutely crazy. I'm so mad I couldnt finish reading it because I have test on it tomorrow so I had to read the book summaries online, but still I cant believe that all that happened in this book happend foreal. This is by far the best book ive ever read, I got so sad when I read Rex died, I felt like I knew Rex in real life. I wish I could contact Jeannette and tell her how fascinated I am by her book, It's an incredible story!!!!

  • This memoir was like an accident that was difficult to turn away from...if ever I met this woman, I would like to give her a hug. That's all I can say...

  • Great book! Couldn't put it down. Never once did I get the impression that Jeannette felt sorry for herself. I love her spirit and her love for family.

  • @xuziqueue Ughh Such a Good Book Man !!:) i just wanna meet them all and thank them for such a wonderful Story!

  • I am about half way through this book and i feel like i am reading my own memoir. I too had the alcoholic Father full of dreams and we were always on some adventure living in an old school bus made into a home for 6 children and mother and father. Jeannette Thank you for writting this book. I do not feel like a freek now because of this book. God bless you and your Family no matter how dysfuctional it was. Much respect for you.

  • I finished this book in about 8 hours of straight reading. It's that good. it sometimes makes you happy, then makes you furious, and then instantly lets you down.

  • @DudeKarKey I know, knowing that Rex died was such a let down..... I bonded so much with the book I felt as though I knew Rex and I was so sad. This book is absolutly incredible.

  • this was my first memoir i ever read and it was amazing. Even though Rex Walls was a huge part of the dysfunctions of the family he had a good soul and tried to keep the family together like gluing a brick building but it collapsed. The glass castle represents her build up in confidence and hope, everytime she is firm and confident the castle is mentioned but when she is not confidence like when dad asked her for money the castle is not being built. she built her own glass castle mentally.

  • This book is an example of how to make lemonade out of lemons. The parents & the situation were dysfunctional. No doubt. We can replicate our past or learn from it. I am sure it is/was not easy for any of the people in this family to live in their own skin. It takes a LOT of inner strength to grow and accept that our parents did the best THEY could, even though it was not the best thing for us. I lived this kind of life & never wanna again. Thanks for sharing your story. I feel less alone.

  • i just finished reading this book. its a great memoir book.

  • it feels like i know the mother after reading the book. specially when she was talking about the paintings.

  • this book broke my heart but it's one of the most beautiful I've ever read

  • This book is the best book i have ever listened to.

  • How can you hate people who are clearly mentally ill (Both parents) and delusional?

The children should have been removed from their parents. But instead every adult that came into their lives turned their heads and let the children continue to live (survive, actually) in their environment. Everyone who walked away from these kids let them down.

All this being said, the kids learned to survive and became better and stronger people because of it. How do you make sense of such things?

  • she talks so fast!

  • what??? That's her mom???! in the picture of her mom that was in the book, she looked NOTHING LIKE THAT

  • @kisa154 I know I was schoked. She looks like a beautiful woman in the book with her dress and everything, who in the world would imagine that this old lady walking around new york is the same person.... this book is incredible!

  • I think ,after reading this book :the father was a "mental abuser, and a Soziopath",a terrible "Blender"!

  • Das Buch :Schloss aus Glas" muss man lesen!

  • Das Buch :Schloss aus Glas" muss man lesen!

  • I can't stand her mother after reading her book. She made so many incredibly stupid mistakes, and from what I've heard, has never taken responsibility for them.

  • @bonnieb118 ....but! they become amazingly positive humans.......

  • @Empathisantin57 it doesn't matter. She and her husband abused their children. They are lucky they way their children turned out.

  • I read this memoir in one sitting, it was fascinating and very well written.

  • why is her mom on the streets if shes living on park avenue?

  • pussy book

  • Jeannette thought she was so ugly as a child, but she's gorgeous. I could she have thought that?

  • best book i have ever read..... make a movie please

  • when i read the book, i was sooooooo upset at jeannette's mom, i thought i'd stop reading, but i picked it up again after 2 weeks. yet now, i can't take in that this woman is just like any other old mom

  • @Ayumura96 She had mental illness you unobservant MORON.

  • @MrGrevy You are so depressed with your life, aren't you? I can easily tell that you have some form of a metal problem. Or maybe no one to talk to. Get bullied by peers or Co-Workers. Vent your anger at other people. Pretty sad and despicable if you ask me..

  • @mark9241 Looks like you've failed again! I'm not the least bit depressed, no mental health issues, and I'm not bullied by anyone. On the contrary I have a great family and a fun social life. I LOVE how turds like you assume that someone has to be fucked up in some way if they dare to disagree with you. Such irony.

  • She came to give a lecture at my college, and I thought it was really cute how she would slip up sometimes and begin speaking in a Southern accent. Love her story. :)

  • @FearTheFlowers So you admire fakeness and somehow speaking in a southern accent is wrong?? Was this a community college? Disgusting idiot.

  • @MrGrevy Ah, no I never said that. I'm from the south myself and my college is one of the best...just saying. I just thought it was cute how her accent changed depending on what she was talking about. That is all, kind sir.

  • @FearTheFlowers "my college is one of the best..' LOL sure it is

  • I just finished the book and although i think its great she adapted and survived her parents upbringing i cant help but think how many people are arrested and thrown in jail for abusing kids so badly and i guess shes saying it doesnt matter how crappy your folks are you can still make it in this world, it really doesnt amtter if you give a shit about your kids and im taling actions not words.

  • @zaptoronto Good job on COMPLETELY missing the nuances of the book. Go get a GED and stfu.

  • @zaptoronto You honestly thought it was a sad story? Read Dave Pelzer a child called it. Definitely my favorite book. You will NEVER regret it.

  • The saddest book I have ever read, although at times it was so outrageous and pathetic, it made me laugh!

  • The saddest book I have ever read, although at times it was so outrageours and pathetic, it made me laugh!

  • woaa she talk fast ahaha im a native new yorker n i dnt even tlk dat fast... i thought she had a country accent 4 some reason..

  • Rex is dead. But there is a picture of him and Rose Mary at the beginning of the book.

  • She talks as well as she writes, damn.

  • I love Jeannette Walls!!! She lived a crazy life but it made her who she is!

  • I WANT TO BUY HER MOMS PAITINGS!!!

  • I have never laughed and cried so hard while reading a book. Fabulous, fabulous book.

  • Adore the book. (: such an inspiring author. she makes you feel so many emotions durning this book.

If you like this you should also read "Alicia" It's a memoir of a girl who lived durning the holocaust. ♥

  • Fascinating story...

  • I'm reading this book right now and looking at this video, I can not bear to finish it. Is she glorifying her mother for her lack of responsibility and abusive, neglectful behavior? Consistently through out the book, there are few epiphanies but more or less, moments where I realize (as the reader) how misleading all these events are when Walls makes up excuses for her horrendous parents.

  • @haylie230 It's her parents , they have a huge heart they tried to improve for her. they love her, yes they make odd choices but that's what impacts you so much.

  • i wanna see how her siblings look like

  • Just breaking into this book tonight. The first few pages are already overwhelming. This is going to be a ride.

  • @LaneCGMS me too im 14 and i also loved the book!

  • Hahaha, I come from a family that is also vibrant and dysfunctional, and I really, really feel this book. It's amazing and full of life and something I can relate to. Believe it or not, I am jealous of her father and the fact she had a father to support her, even if he wasn't the best. He never quit or walked out on his children like my dad, and for that I give kudos to him.

  • wtf is shit on fast foward!

  • LOVE this book

  • Man this book is soooo good I dont even like reading that much and the ending left me depressed.

  • i think she felt despondent about her mom in that momoment

  • This book was so amazing! I seriously could not put it down! A must read!

  • this book was amazing

  • Most amazing story!

  • Absolutely amazing. . .

  • i read the book and it was so good!!! and omg she fell out of a car!!!

  • Oh wow, seeing her mom made me cry. What an amazing book. Thanks for sharing your story Jeannette.

  • Oh depressing :( but so good!

  • i found this book really interesting and the only thing i found was horrifing was when Rex was in his drunken state and he started to smash all these valuable thing that Rose mary's mother use to own and it all gone. the only thisg that concerns me is that i hope that they will never make a movie out of this that will ruin the whole book

  • I finished this book and found that I was horrified that throughout thing, Jeannette consistently defended her mother & father despite their selfish, egomaniacal and abusive way of life. These "savants" never understood the VERY basic concepts parenting (i.e., protection, shelter, love, responsibility and sacrifice). There is no point to and no heroine in this book; there is only someone getting paid to describe abusive parents and the successful running away from them.

  • I don't trust any "memoirs,." especially one written by a gossip columnist. I suspect that Walls is embellishing her story, and that she is leaving out key details about her and her family's past. Walls digs up dirt on people for MSNBC and she outed Matt Drudge. It seems like a less than honorable way to earn a living.

  • @penrod59 So? Who really cares if all of it's true or not- it's still a great story and that's all that matters? While I agree with you about gossip columnists like her, this is a whole new type of writing and so she should be judged in a completely different way.

  • @penrod59 So? Who really cares if all of it's true or not- it's still a great story and that's all that matters? While I agree with you about gossip columnists like her, this is a whole new type of writing and so she should be judged in a completely different way.

  • @penrod59 Who would lie about this? Just insinuating that she is lieing is foolish. it was her life, her mind, her very thoughts. so shaddup.

  • I loved this book! :D

  • Great BOOK!!! Loved every min I was reading it. Thanks

  • Just finished her book. It's a truly amazing story.

  • i just finished this book too. i loved it it's my favorite book. my mom told me i should read it after she read it.

  • Bottom line, Jeannette Walls = Amazing

  • One of the best books It's heart wrenching and mind blowing

  • I am not a book reader but I love the book! Is paramount making the movie???

  • Though it keeps me wondering what happened to Maureen. I live in California so Im curious as to what if I might run elbows with her one day at the mall, at Safeway or something. Lol

I highly admire Jeannette and her other siblings for their achievements despite their rough beginnings. Indeed they are an inspiration to many. Rose Mary and Rex were lucky to have them as children. They deserved all the success. Kudos!

  • I feel no sympathy, whatsoever for the mother. She deserved to be homeless! If any, she should be arrested for negligence. It's not like they were poor by fate, he and her husband CHOSE to be poor. Although I should give a little credit to the supportive dad; it was very nice of him to lend Jeannette some money. Indeed, he never let them down until the very end. Them reconciling and reuniting was very touching.

  • @sevenshotproductions - you spew your judgment over this family but you fail to recognize that they signed up for this life. All of them. These kids had love, honesty and the tenacity to prevail. Give them some credit and shove your narrow minded judgement where the sun doesn't shine. There's enough of that already in this world.

  • @MimiZ914 I had two comments. You should've reread the other one. I was only blaming the mom, the dad was very supportive and the kids were nonetheless truly admirable.

  • @sevenshotproductions - The father was a rip off artist. Ripped off people and his own family. His alcoholism took food out of the mouths of his family. You call that supportive? Both parents are major whack jobs but I see their philosophy. At least they gave their kids some foundation of self esteem. When a spirit incarnates into this world/life/body, they are well aware of the situation they are coming into. They all willingly signed up for this. Painful as it was. Talk about real courage.

  • @sevenshotproductions NO BODY DESERVES HOMELESSNESS. Are you aware of what mental illness & alchoholism does family dynamics? Homelessness as punishment? Thank God you are not in a political position. Get a heart with some compassion. Minds are like parachutes - they only function when open.

  • They thought of being homeless as an "adventure". They wanted it in the first place. This is America, it's freedom and what you make out of it. Besides, when the govt tried to intervene and offered them food stamps they said they didn't need help. So it was their CHOICE. Therefore, they deserved their fate. Cause and effect. Simple as that.

  • @sevenshotproductions The whole thing I get from this book is this: the human spirit and the ability to rise and meet the challenge, to prevail

is just nothing short of miraculous

and gives us all the perspective to keep moving-

    no whining allowed.

  • @MimiZ914 Have you read the book? Jeannette makes it clear her parents DID think they were on some sort of adventure, and did not mind the homeless lifestyle. They weren't compatible with anything else, except being taken care of, which the mom and dad would have hated unless it was by their kids and the kids were through living with the parents.

Homelessness wasn't a punishment for the parents, that is true. But they were ok with being homeless, and even seemed to embrace it.

  • @skip430 I have read the book. And I can understand the emotional dynamics of both the parents. this was their choice but when you have 4 kids along for the ride and put them thru the hell they went thru so the parents could have their lifestyle is nothing short of abuse. They all survived somehow. I wonder how this took it's toll on their physical development, not to mention emotional. THey are all survivors but kids need the basics.

  • "The Glass Castle" is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. I just finished Jeannette Wall's book "Half broke horses." I highly recommend it!

  • i bought the book for a school presentation... ive almost read 60 pages.. its fun to read :)

  • What a lot of entertainment based upon 2 things: exaggeration and fabrication. Great entertainment though; excellent marketing job!

  • how do you KNOW first hand that it's fabrication?

  • one of the best books ive ever read.

they need to make a movie.

  • paramount is making a movie!

  • i really want to see a picture of Rex

  • @tabinpumanejo there's one in the book.

  • Comment removed

  • @tabinpumanejo there is one in the book

  • @tabinpumanejo He has passed away, but their wedding picture is in the front of the book, at least it is in my paperback copy.

  • @tabinpumanejo There is A Picture Of Rex Walls And His Wife in the beging of the book.

  • @tabinpumanejo Maybe they can't because he did the skedaddle

  • @tabinpumanejo if you want to see Rex Walls look in the book.

  • @tabinpumanejo There's a picture of him and his wife in the beginning of the book. I too wanted to know what he looked like, then I realized I skipped some of the introduction of the book which has pictures. He looks exactly how I pictured him.

  • reading (almost done) it in college...its really good...i wonder how lori's doing...

  • You people try raising children with almost no money, no home, the government chasing you down, and just doing odd jobs. Heh, you'd probably end up like them too.

I hate it when 12 year olds say that it's ALL of Jeanette's parent's fault.. without putting yourselves in the parent's place. Ofcourse it wasn't a good life but Jeanette's parents were poor, seriously people... It always makes me laugh when people say this WHILE they have money, a job, and a warm house to live in.

  • @RsAssasin I just finished reading this book in english class recently, and the reason I tink they're blaming the parents mostly, is because they COULD have had money if the dad didn't go spend it on alcohol every chance he got. Also the mother could have gotten plenty of money from owning all the acres of land she inhereted or something, but she chose to keep it.

  • @Holly926 Yeah, really some selfish choices made. Mom and Dad both had some major mental health issues on top of everything else.

  • @RsAssasin Really?? all they (the parents) had to do was keep one or two of the many jobs lost. There was the land in TX. Was never clear how much it was worth, but probably enough to make some changes. Or the home/inheritance from the grandmother. The diamond ring. The cadillac. They had so many opportunities to give their children a somewhat decent life. They failed miserably!!!!!

  • I have read the book and it is really good :)

  • Comment removed

  • I agree with the fact that her mother is horrible but her father in my opinion was different but overall a good father except for his drinking.

  • Her parents neglected their children completely. I agree that her mother should be in prison for all the things they un0needingly put her children through. During their entire life of poverty, she was sitting on $1 million worth of land she could have used.

And Jeanette, it is good that you overcame your circumstances but you can't honestly defend your mother and father the way you do. They do not deserve it.

  • If Rose Mary Walls is still alive, she should be in jail for child abuse and neglect. Jeannette defending her parents in any way is disturbing. She reminds me of the beaten dog that still stays with its master. Jeannette's glorifying her parents' sick behavior is abusive to children every where who are hungry and beaten.

  • I cursed at the book when Rose Mary refused to sell the diamond ring, came home from college and refused to work, and when I found at she was had $1 million worth of land. What an idiot.

  • Ah greed. It is insane she would not sell the diamond ring for her children!

  • Rose Mary was an awful, awful, awful mother. She should be left in the street hungry and cold as she allowed her children to live.

Jeannette, you should have your head examined for sticking up for your parents even in the slightest. You're still insanely dysfunctional - bestseller or not.

  • Rex walls is Godlike, second to no man who has ever lived!

  • Jeanette Walls gives the word "dysfunction" a new meaning. It really gives you a whole new perspective on your own upbringing. She is so upbeat and positive and learned to find love and acceptance in a world of chaos and uncertainty. She is able to understand her parents and see them as people at a very young age. This is a great book and I recommend it to anyone that wants to feel good about their own situation. Props to Jeanette!

  • OMG! i am 14 y.o. and i love this book. its just so real...

  • it is real... its a memuar! :)

  • Well, Duhh. XD

  • @LaneCGMS it is real...

  • @KitKatSkitty Is what real?... The book? Yea? xD

  • When I read about the parents making her and her siblings, plus the newborn baby ride in the back of a uhaul for 14 hours, without stopping to check on them, the mother not even thinking to sit in the back with them, I was floored. Those poor kids. I know I would be uncomfortable in the back of a darkened uhaul for 14 hours having to pee!

  • SS or it didn't happen

  • i read the book and i respect the fact that jeanette's family had more strengths than weaknesses. in fact, in many ways i admire her parents nonconformist ways. they did not let society dictate how they raised thier children. as in any family, we should not focus on all the negative aspects, but the positive, just as jeanette did. otherwise one becomes bitter and unsure of themselves. her mom in many ways reminds me of my own mother, perhaps bi-polar? a delicate situation if she is.

  • a bit naive. yes, her mom focused on the positives, but it got to the point that she was ignoring reality. she neglected her children in welch and put off her basic responsibilities as a parent.

  • her mom might have read the book and say to herself "i said that???" she may or may not be the type to regret things like that but i dunno. jeanette's awesome

  • I'm a hard-core book-a-holic & have studied all aspects of child abuse & the inevitable outcomes of abused & or neglected kids. While Jeanette Walls & her siblings have made it through the muck & mire, I still think that things are either extremely whitewashed (to save face) & drummed up (literary thrill) in this story. Romanticizing child abuse & neglect in the story of her life, especially with the "rags to riches" ending just left me unmoved. But to each their own I guess...

  • how do you know it was drummed up?

  • Comment removed

  • For those of you who condemn Jeannette Walls' parents for the way their children were raised should also remember that their children turned out to be productive members of society. Why? Because even though their living conditions were not normal, they grew up in a family filled with love and optimism. Don't judge someone if you haven't walked in their shoes. My daughter and I met Jeannette last night and she possesses the same uplifting and positive attitude as her mother. She's fabulous!
