this latest update: I have located a source for a CD that has Robot man on it. the CD is Restless Doll by varied artists. the CD is available, and at CD universe Amazon also.
@wgilbert3 Someone asked me where this song could be found about 4 month ago.I did not know then, but I do now. I checked and this song "Robot Man + My Little Marine", are avaliable on a CD titled "Teenage Girls Vol 3.There is one currently on Ebay.I am not sure where else it may be found, but it may be? Hope this info helps.Thank you for stopping by, and have a Happy New Year.
@wgilbert3 Now that is a good idea.A better idea would be for some music lable to release a CD of all her recordings as Gayla Peevey & Jamie Horton. It would have to be a 2cd release, but worth it to get crystal clear recordings.Thank you, and drop by anytime.
The song was written by a friend of mine George Gohering and I do believe recorded by Connie Francis first. George also wrote Lipstick on your Collar and pitched it to Connie Francis. Wonderful man. He's written several other songs for several other artists including Elvis, the Platters and Barbara Streisand.
Much discussion on who did this first but ,since one of the writers wrote "lipstick" for Connie ,don't you think the song was pitched to her first? It was a big hit in Britain in summer of 1960 and Joy music must have been very disappointed at Connie's decision not to release it as a single in the USA and hence tried their luck on their own label with one of their own artists .Connie recorded it on 7 April 1960 and describes it as the dumbest song she ever recorded!
@RainCoastWest No Jamie Horton did not have any part in writting this song, and Connie Frances recorded this song first in the U.K. Joy had her record this song, but it was later pulled at the request of Connie's agents, which is how the story goes.
@farfisa Connie Francis recorded this song first, and it was only for U.K. release.Connie didn't like the song, but it had to be used as the flip side to "Mama". I have added links under the information for you to check out. Everything you need is there.Enjoy Roy
I also am more partial to the songs that she sang as Gayla Peevey, but many of her recordings under the name of Jamie Horton are very good. She wrote several of the songs she sang as J.Horton.Thank you for stopping by. :)
Love this song! I know that Connie Francis was very popular back in the day, but I like this version much better. I was sorry to hear that Jamie (Gayla Peevey) wasn't more well received as an adult singer...she was really good. : )
With the sucess of "My Little Marine",it would seem so,but it was not to be.Still she had a great run as a child singer.I'm happy that you enjoyed the song and thank for your comments.
I love and adore you for posting this! I was born in 1967 and I gew up listening to my mum's record collection. When I left home, I took this with me, along with my boy lollipop and many other greats of the time. You don't have Tony Sheveton's version of A million drums? Thank yo for this!!!
Connie Francis's version was a major hit in the United Kingdom--top of the charts. It was not released as a single in the US. I never heard this version, and I find it hard to believe, as one comment mentions, that Dick Clark gave it heavy play. I was a regular watcher of American Bandstand during this early period and never heard it.
Well the only thing that I can confirm is that she appeared on "The Dick Clark Saturday Night Beechnut Show" on August,27,1960 and sang "My Little Marine and "Robot Man".Hope this helps.
That may be the case, but I certainly would not say that is the same as saying "Dick Clark pushed this one a lot on American Bandstand" as rdf1947 alleges in a comment below. As an avid viewer of both the AB and Saturday night shows, I must tell you I never heard of this lady. Connie Francis and Brenda Lee ruled the roost as regards female R & R acts during this period.
I remember that they used to play songs to dance to,and this is what rdf1947 may be refering to,and I do think that the word "alleges" is to strong a word to use.We all remember past things in different ways.I like Connie, but Jamie's version of this song is much better.Gayla Peevey (aka Jamie Horton) is very well known for her childrens songs,(especially the Hippo one) and I have all of her recordings.Let's leave it at this.Thank you
Thought you might be interested to know that one of the writers of Robot Man, George Goering, also wrote Connie Francis's hit "Lipstick on Your Collar", a 1959 double-sided million seller (flipside was "Frankie" written by Sedaka/Greenfield)
Thanks again for putting up these Gayla/ Jamie songs. Make sure you tell me when you put up Too Young to Have a Broken Heart, I Want You to Be My Guy, That's What I Learned in School, Do it Again, 77 Santas, Rubber Legs, A Dog Named Joe, Upsy Down Town, The Night I Ran Away, Daddy's Report Card,
And the Jamie Horton ones too, like: Missin', Where's My Love?, Heartbreakin' Doll, Just So So, There Goes My Love, We're Through, We're Finished, What Should a Teen Heart Do, etc etc... THANK YOU!
I think I like this version better than the Connie Francis one...Who's was original? How far did this go on the charts and in what year? Neat that her pic is on the lable! Odd for an old record! Coolness!
This is a very nice surprise as I have never heard of Jamie Horton. I would love to hear more of her songs. That said, she really doesn't compete with Connie Francis. IMO Connie was one of the top 5 female singers of all time.
Although she released many songs as Jamie,(My Little Marine, being a Hit under this name) this is the only one I like.I prefer her recordings as Gayla Peevey (children' Songs)better. And I agree Connie voice is excellent.Glad you liked it.Thanks for the comment.
Wellll, if ya look under the red W&G it does say 'A Joy Recording' ..I used to have this song & missed it for the last 38 years or so. Thanks for posting it. Now, if we can get Janie Grant, Mike Clifford, Claudine Clark, Linda Scott, The Pastel Six, Robin Clark & Gary US Bonds in the same room on a Saturday night somewhere, what a party we could have!!!
Massive tune.. Hahaha!

here is challenge for an enterprising Oldies label. why not have this song on a list of oldies on a CD?

Actually - Jamie Horton (aka Gayla Peevey) was the first person to record Robot Man - I believe she co-wrote it. Connie Francis "covered" it, later.

I started a secondhand record shop in 1976 and this Aussie W&G recording was quite rare and fetched about $15 in those days in Australia.

A great one. Dick Clark pushed this one a lot on American Bandstand. Connie Francis did a cover, but JAmie's is so much better.
