Players like Vai and Malmsteem and Satriani base their playing on the blues and you can hear that in every solo. The Edge, however, practically invented the entire spectrum he plays in. I defy you to find an instance of someone playing a riff like Streets or an intro like With Or Without You before The Edge.

Instead he constructs them from roots and fifths to create that ambiguous, mysterious vibe. More thought goes into the slowest, most deliberate guitar line in a U2 song than in a typical Malmsteem scale-following speed shredding solo. The Edge is not just a great guitarist, he's a great musician and that's what you don't understand.

Its subjective. The 'fast' and show boat styled guitar players are 'six shooter' cowboys who challenge each other as to who is the 'fastest' or 'best.' Edge is certainly not as 'fast' as Steve Vai, however he can do something that they don't do. Edge will play just the right notes to support the singer and make a beautiful piece of music. Its purely subjective as to which style you prefer. I will say from experience that being the fastest is less fun when compared to playing WITH your band.
I agree that it's more fun to play in a band(Steve Vai doesn't seems to be bored but...)so let's talk about David Gilmour or guitarists like that,they play in a band & they play really better than The Edge!
Finally i'll say that we're talking about a video which shows a "solo" from The Edge so at the beginning i didn't care about what he could do with chords, i was just shocked that people could find him wonderful in THIS video, that's certainly not a beautiful solo compared to others

he totally beats brian mays delay, he is famous for his delay, brian may i like him better, but he was more famous for his great sense of melody, so yes the edge is the king of delay
